My first concert I ever went to was Deep Purple in 1985 in Detroit MI. 1985! I was in seventh grade! They opened with this and brings back memories! I also learned how badly I needed glasses as I couldn’t see much! Second show Iron Maiden I had glasses and could see! Thanks for this!
Ritchie Blackmore is just fantastic here, rattling off improvisations right off the top of his head. Love the melodic bit he plays during the solo, a hint of what would come later. Gillan does his best here, though clearly struggling with a cold. Does okay. Paicey and Roger make a tremendous rhythm section and Jon Lord is playing the chords as well as a corker of an organ solo. RIP Jon, you were superb.
One of the most great concerts of all time, with one of the greatest bands ever in Rock & Roll History, in one of the best achieved tours of all time... It is a shame, nothing last forever!
Great view of the Lord at work in the solo! His and Ritchie's chemistry, timing, and improvisational instincts were impeccable. Maybe the best "dual guitars" in Rock history?
John Desmond His voice was actually damaged around '79. He had the nodules removed from his vocal folds but did not take the time off that was required for them to heal. And, he went ham on Born Again and his voice couldn't handle the stress as it was still healing. Thus, he permanently damaged his voice.
The one show they filmed (as we know), and Gillan's got a cold, and the rest of the band, especially Blackmore is not giving it 100% either. But it's still great, as it's the only full 'Perfect Strangers'-tour footage in it's entirety that is available. Thank you for posting in such great quality.
By now I imagine you have perfect strangers-live, filmed in Australia 84. A soullous performance if ever you saw one. I think expectation was so high they couldn't live up to it....like zep on live aid.
