Aretha Franklin, my Nigerian Dwarf dairy goat, started kidding season with a pretty tragic breech birth that resulted in a lost kid. It's kidding season on the farm and that means we're prepping for LOTS of goat babies, goat milk, and everything in between. We're ready with our birth kit, our kidding positions, and all the knowledge and supplies we need, and now we wait. Waiting is hard on a homestead, especially when you know what might go wrong, and in this case, seemingly everything that could have gone wrong during this goat birth did go wrong. But in steps Dolly Parton, giving birth to healthy QUADRUPLETS and providing Aretha with the happiest ending to her tragic start.

Well done Anne. As my dad used to always say “if you have livestock you have dead stock” it’s a hard pull to swallow. We lamb down 100’s of sheep every year and always do our best to foster babies who are found orphaned with ewes who have still births. Love seeing lambs happily grazing in the paddocks with their new mums. Happy new year to you from Australia 🇦🇺
I remember getting my first goat 8yrs ago.
When PepperAnne had her first kid and it passed away soon after birth, she was heartbroken. Her being heartbroken in turn, broke my heart. She would call for her baby in the middle of the night and I would go and comfort her, hug her. Then she would start crying, and I would cry with her, and stay with her, hold her, in the middle of the night, for 1 month.
Just typing this is making me cry.
Didn’t know goats could make me cry, but here we are.
Hopefully happy tears :)
I'm glad she was able to have a baby after her own had past away...
Aloha, Anne. In the spirit of your mama-baby goat matchmaking... We took in a wild chicken mama and her chicks (about two weeks old). Gave them an “apartment” in the “maternity ward” of our chicken coop. Unfortunately, mama flew the coop during feeding and we failed at catching her or lure her back. So, taking an example from you, I put our disabled hen (can’t walk, legs deformed) in with the chicks. They’re now slowly forming an improvised family. Warmth for the chicks and mental health boost for our lonely hen ☺️
You're such an inspiration, Anne. Just amazing.
No words. Just ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I see that you had a moment of inspiration and let one goat adopt the new born baby from another one. And that made all the goats happy. Not to mention me as well. Thank you for posting this. You're an awesome person.
This is such a beautiful, heartwarming video and story!! Making me cry big tears of joy! Life is so precious! Thank you!!
love your soft soft heart

Way to go Anne. Giving a new born kid to Aretha Franklin was a wonderful thing to do. Perfect instincts. You're amazing young lady. Wishing you a wonderful new year.

Such a happy ending!
What a beautiful story and happy ending!!
I'm a sucker for a happy ending :)
such a wonderful story! i have experienced the same highs and lows on our little goat dairy here in north east tennessee. so many are missing out by not being connected to nature. we lost a 6 month old on Christmas Eve night to bloat. while that breaks your heart, the joys of birth and living life with nature make up for it. thank you for sharing. thank you for your tender heart!!
It's those impossible moments that make the good ones so much sweeter! So sorry about your goat!
You are a true steward of this earth, keep going strong, and take time to breathe and keep doing what you do, and it will all be okay!
Such a great ending!!!
What a wonderful video to begin the new year. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
What a way to start 2021. Thankyou.
Always best to start the year with a smile :)
Anne, I know the pain of having to put one of your farm animals down and you are right it is not easy. But let me say what you did with the birth switch was a great idea. Well done. You are one smart woman. The animals are lucky to have someone who cares about them so much and is willing to do what ever she can to be the best steward she can be. Again well done and may the new year bring you and your family many blessings like you have brought us. Happy New Year Anne, and Mom of all Trades. You have a great daughter there we could us many more like her.
Thank you so much!! Mom says Happy New Year!

Wat a sweet story. My aunt had a ewe named after my mom. She lost her lamb and adopted another lamb that had been rejected by its mom. They named the lamb after me.

Saw this on the news, goat farmers gathering thrown out Christmas trees and giving 'em to their goats. The trees are a very good source of vitamin C and other nutrients. Do you do this? Might 'flavor" the milk. LUV yer stuff!!

Happy new year! Thank you!
That’s a great ending. Glad for all involved
The best ending!
Awesome, Anne that is so amazing
Isn't it incredible?!
I grew up on a dairy farm and we would have to pull several calves a year. We would take a rope and reach inside to find the calf and tie the rope around the legs and then use a tractor to pull the calf out. Some survived. Some didn't. You did good with your goats.
I'm so glad we haven't had to pull a calf yet, but I know that's coming. We do our best, and that's the best we can ever do.
I keep crying at videos... I'm totally going to lose my tough guy image.
Guys with feelings are much cooler than tough guys anyway 🤷🏻♀️
love it
I had a friend tell me life goes on at a hard time in my life. It didn't help. But...this time, well, you know.
It does go on, and it gets better sometimes, and sometimes it gets worse. The more we look for the good in everything though, the better we are at identifying the good when it comes around :)
OMGOSH! This made my day! What a wonderful ending. 💕
I'm so glad! The best ending for a sad start
Life always finds a way, Life abides in peace...
Absolutely.
@@AnneofAllTrades Happy New Year to you Anne and to your family as well. May 2021 bring peace and prosperity to you all.

Even the saddest stories sometimes have happy endings!
The animals understand. She was giving you a hug when you were telling her tale!
She gives the best hugs!
I’m not crying YOU’RE crying!
Good tears I hope!
@@AnneofAllTrades Definitely!
"Farmers have to be tough and tender". I couldn't do it. I tried to work with animals at a rescue shelter but whenever an animal died I was devastated. I only lasted 2 months before I had to quit because I'm too sensitive and took too long to get over a loss. I would keep second guessing myself and thinking I was to blame. I loved helping out but just don't have the toughness. It's weird because I can actually handle death of people much easier.
Farming is definitely not for everyone, for that exact same reason. We have to learn to give ourselves lots of grace, because sometimes things DO go wrong, and it IS our fault. I've often said that dealing with animals is a lot harder because at least with humans you can explain what's going on and help them understand their suffering, and though that doesn't always ease it, it does help to rationalize it and also compartmentalize it knowing it's not going to be forever. Animals, however, don't give us that luxury and that can be really tough.
@@AnneofAllTrades You're one of the best. Thanks for the good words.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy New Year!
Life is strange and this is very cool thank you for Sharing

We miss you!! So many printing projects to come! All the time I’m out around my farm thinking how cool it would be to print a fence post grabber thing, or a little connector piece, and always think of you
