Good old Oklahoma catfish in my Grandpa's beautiful pond . It was about a 4 pounder and I was really proud of it . He raised catfish in big wire cages and two of the rotted out and so he let us fish for them . He also taught us ( he was Cherokee ) that it was better to find the soft spot on their foreheads and put a broom straw in it to kill the catfish quicker . He said skinning a live fish didn't sound right to him . He taught me a lot ... I really miss him... Buck McKay ( William Henry McKay Cherokee/ Irish . PK

I was about 5. at Sabastion inlet, I held a piece of shrimp off the jetty's and caught I think was a Pin fish....I was hooked for life!. I remember on the north side of the bridge was a bait shop, they had a big wooden box on a pole that said, "Caution, Baby Rattler's", under cage wire, it was plastic baby rattle toys only....I doubt the place is still there

My first fish I ever caught was a Sunfish that I caught on a drop line (hand line) on a piece of bread and a huge hook at Grover Cleveland pond in West Caldwell, NJ when I was 9 years old. Been hooked ever since. Now I'm catching bluefin, Dorado, yellowtail, rockfish, and everything else that swims off the coast of Southern California. Cool question, brought back some memories.

I caught my first fish on July 9th 1971 and it was my 4th birthday and the fish was a white sucker. My Godfather was proud and bragged up my fish when we got back to my Grandparents house. Went back to the same spot last year on my birthday again and caught a brook trout with the first cast.

i dont remember the first fish. but i do remember going fishing with my brother in Glasgo Pontd in in Griswold Ct. I was in grade 2-4 . we caught crawfish, smallmouth bass, and perch. The crawfish our mom cooked for us, the bass got to live another day. But the perch got cleaned and traded to the lady down the road for a handful of penny candy. those were the days. today is our mom's birthday. i sure do miss her.

    TIP ALERT!
At our camp we had three cent miss baits -(also did well in other lakes & rivers!) :
A gob of big night crawlers woven onto the hook, all those wiggly bits seriously call the cats in! AUGMENT with large marshmallows above the hook for both scent trail & buoyancy!
Fresh shrimp…we never caught anything under about 10lbs!
Finally a morning spent pulling elephant weeds out of the shallows ALWAYS meant a bunch crawfish… They were AWESOMELY AWESOME for both BASS and catfish!!
We tried the stinky liver, the assorted jelly & paste tube & collectively caught a whopping NADA ZIP ZERO ZED ZILCH!

Ok I'm home having a snack with Ms Kelly. Saw the Cat at the beginning, at least you're not Noodling. I used a rod and reel set up like that when I caught my first fish in 1955 I think when I was 5 yrs old - a Sunfish in a cove off Lake Winnipesaukee New Hapmshire. I might have a picture but doubt I can find it.
Nice place and pleasant day fishing. Watching you land the big one is fun. Looks like a manmade pond there, a little beauty.
Enjoy, greet your pal, seems like a nice guy.

First and many more was rainbow trout using Mepps spinning lures. The problem was the river was stocked and you’re supposed to pay and only fly fish. The park rangers would yell at us from their side of the river. All I knew ( 8 years old ) was there were a lot of fish in this river behind our house. Months later the rangers came over in canoes and broke my rod on his knee. Ran home crying to mom who immediately took me to buy another rod and with a stern warning RUN next time.
