What is your favorite 70-200?
@Stefan Malloch mine is Canon EF 2.8L mark II, because I own it ;)
This one. I have it. I have the 4.0 also, but this one is so much better 😍.
Sony 70-200 f2.8 gm
Is there a sigma version of this lens coming out soon? I loved my canon 70-200 but since switching over want something without breaking the bank.
watching from India ... your videos are quite unique ...I wonder why you have so less subscribers??
keep it up .... you put much more effort than others ... I love your videos
The perfect analysis.
Technically!
Awesome job dear.
👌🏻💎
My go to lens, I even use it for wildlife photography with the TC1.4, that’s my favourite lens😍😍😍
The 70-200 GM works quite well for IR - tested with the 850nm filter (lenses that pass with the 590nm can potentially fail with the 850nm). So far there have been two issues with my mine: 1) Very bad CA when used wide open in certain harsh high contrast situations, and 2) the OSS can be heard when shooting 20fps with the A9 in silent mode. I do love the way the lens renders the bokeh, manual override, and it is the only way to get close to 300 f/4 with a FE mount lens. :) Also, the tripod foot is interchangeable with the 100-400 - highly recommend the Kirk tripod foot.
I do like how you demo the stabilisation. 👍🏻
Another cracking vid, would deffo pick this up if my budget could stretch that far 😅
Great in depth review. Thanks for the details and specs. I liked and subscribed. I’m upgrading to this lens from my 70-200 F4 👍
Great lens!.. but.. Wait a few weeks. Prime day and WHAT NOT coming soon!
Great review as always. Thanks.
Thanks for the great review man!
Excellent review thank you
Great detailed review

I finally bought this lens thanks to your review. It was between this and the Tamron 70-180. I owned the Tamron but it just didn’t feel right. This 70-200 is a beast of a lens and it’s my favorite lens especially for weddings. So sharp and just amazing.
Hope you enjoy it!
It’s THE best lens for weddings. Facts.
Fantastic review! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great job on the video.
Love your work Stefan. Im a Sony shooter and I really appreciate and look forward to your in depth videos
Appreciate that my friend
That was useful. Thank you.
(Introduces the lens)... "This lens does not need an introduction" LOL, just giving you a hard time. Great review! Keep up the good work!
Had the 2x teleconverter on mine for about 3 days. Returned it, it made the autofocus unusable . Have owned the lense for 3 years and it's a beaut for sure
And I’m getting the 2x tele converter tomorrow 😭😭😭
@@jag7112 so how is it ? Im planning on buying one too
I've rented this lens several times and I always have focus problems with it. When it's focused properly, it was perfect. Often however it would be off just a little tiny bit and make the image semi-unusable. I'm waiting for sigma drop their 70-200. For now I purchased the Tamron as it doesnt seem to have that problem. The build of the sony is clearly superior but the Tamron doesn't have the focus problem and does wonders for my injured wrist at longer events.
Great video. I “pulled the trigger “ and ordered a used one. Yeah I would love the 2nd gen… but with taxes that’s $3,000!!! But I was able to order this version with a yr warranty on eBay right at (with taxes etc) $1,077. But like you said I noticed the “gold” version the (grey) G… sells around $1,000 to $1,500 used… find this GM version… yeah I had to get it. Great video.
Great review as always 👍
Appreciate that!
wow realy awsome lens bro..one day i will buy it
I always look at this lens, but sadly have almost no use for it 🙈🙈🙈
Great video btw!
6:49 amazing!
LOVE the birds shot at 6:50
Thanks bud!
I’d love to see a full comparison between the 70-200 with 2x teleconverter to the 100-400 without teleconverter
John Liquori I have both the lenses and the 1.4x which I find gives good results on both lenses. I had the 2x converter originally with the Sony A7iii and found that with the larger converter there was much more hunting and I was not always able to get autofocus and had to revert to manual, felt but the 1.4x was needed for me to give me nearer 600mm on my 100-400. It’s not you answer perhaps but some advice.
@@duncanmcinnes5819 What Duncan said. I wouldn't recommend the 2x.. too much loss of sharpness and AF performance. I have a video on the 1.4x tc though.
Hi Stefan, did you use your A7iii body shooting the photographs/videos reviewing the lens?
Hey Stefan, I also have the old 70-200 GM, can you interchnge the lens hood or no>?
Which camera should I buy for this lens?
Love this vid, thank you for your in depth review. I would love to buy this lens this year, but I am hesitating. It is already 5 years old. I bough the Zeiss Distagon 35mm 1.4 back in 2019 for full price and this year the Sony 35mm 1.4 came out which is not only better, but cheaper as well. I don't want this to happen again if I buy this old 70-200 lens and then they release something better and cheaper. What do you think Stefan ?
they just released the 70-200 mark II and it is 30% lighter, costs a lot more, and only really makes a noticeable difference to the quality of your shots if you are shooting with the a1
Was that a the back Ford truck I saw in your first focusing session?
Is this capable of getting smooth zooms? / would you recommend for filmmaking?
Great review 😊 but so spendy
For telephoto though, since I seldom use it I got myself a nice little bridge camera from Panasonic. Lots of fun, and a secondary camera 👍🏼
these are gr8 reviews
Can I use this for a A 7111 frame
I hear this lens has back focusing issues. Can you tell me more about what that is and if your lens has that issue? I want to buy this lens but am a bit discouraged. I do plan on buying from BH photo with a student discount so I know I will be covered if anything is wrong with the lens early on.
thanks
Thanks for your convincing review. I would also be interested in which lens you use for your YT videos. The 35 mm / 1.8?
You bet. Usually a 16-35, 24-70 or 28-75 in the studio.
I have the Sony a7II and have 2 lenses currently, one being the kit lens that came with it (3.5-5.6/28-70) and my best lens the (1.8/20 G) but always wanted to get a nice telescopic lens like this one, that being said, my older a7II, would it hold back the potential of this lens? it's a full size mirrorless camera.
the sony a7II is pretty much the exact same sensor as the newer sony cameras that are also 24 mp. your camera will not hold back this lens, people use this lens on the even newer but lower Mega pixel a7IIIS. i just got this lens for my a7RIII and i couldn't be happier, the sharpness is pretty good wide open, but closing down to F4 makes this one of the sharpest lenses ive ever used and the bokeh is just incredible. id highly recommend you get it
The 3 customizable buttons must all have the same function assigned to them. You can't assign each one to a different function. I thought of mentioning this as it wasn't clear from the (excellent) review. I wonder if you encountered any of the backfocusing which other reviewers mentioned in the past?
Thanks for pointing that out. No back focusing issues in my copy. 😀
Just plain Best!!!
Great review! Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Constructive criticism: u don’t need the visual stars for one the design is kinda corny & if u already explain the rating no need to visually apply it.
Amazing
Can you review the version 2 and compare them
version2 ?
what do you mean?
Pleasecan you suggest me which is better lens 24-105 f/4 or 70-200 f/4 ?
One is a standard zoom, one is telephoto. Both G lenses. Comparable.
@@StefanMalloch Okay. ... Thank you so much 😊
is the autofocus loud? just got mine and its LOUD
No should be nearly silent.
What a badass lense. If money was not an issue :)
is it good for video too??
Yes it will be a great performing video lens
Would you recommend it to a freelance videographer?
Sure why not
Will this work with a6600?
Yes, with a 1.5x crop
6:55 📸👀👀👀👀👀
At 2:43 I think you mean internal zoom, not focus.
You bet. 😉
Yes, both zoom and focus!
The lens focus slow compared to the competition and it has been quality issues with the centering. It also have problems with focusing towards infinity in many samples. The Latest Nikon F mount and the new canon rf lens is much better. It’s bad for sports and landscape, but may work for portraits if you have a centered sample. Many pros shooting sports has asked Sony to come with an update and it’s likely in development. This is after all an old Minolta design.
well…
Regarding slow focus:
please refer to video with 70-200 zoom test by dpreview including Sony, Canon and Nikon. Actually Sony is still the quickest AF set (sony modern body + sony 70200 2.8) and the highest possible frame rates on the market (close to 30fps with A1)
That being said, it is one of the oldest Sony FE zooms and it would be good to see an update :-)
@@pawelmod3292 I have personally owned the Sony lens and the a9 for two years and it was super frustrating for action dog photography. The problem is not the speed from far to near, but the accuracy/Speed for adjustment during tracking. At least for me a d850 with the last version of the Nikon 70-200 gave much more consistent results. The problem with focus at infinity was also a big limitation. I hope Sony comes with an update. The good bodies deserves it.
@@AlbertKel thx for reply! i’ve heard that indeed d850 is indeed the perfect camera for what it is.
Currently I’m using 70 200 f4 from Sony. Wanted to upgrade soon but not sure any more if it should be 70-200 2.8 or 100-400 or perhaps wait for 70-200 2.8 mkII…
How your A9 AF was working with other lenses?
@@pawelmod3292 a9 is great with everything else made for action especially the 200-600. Let’s hope for a mk2😃
Do you know why they make it white? Why couldn't it be all black?
Classic design probably copying the Canon L series lenses. Known for being great.
i want this lens soooo bad.. currently a broke college student, can't wait to graduate and find a job so i can throw all of my income at new lenses.
I considered it, but everybody is saying Tamron 70-180mm is better except for a couple of minor things. It would be more useful to compare it with Sigma and Tamron.
The white outer shell annoys me. Why can’t Sony just stick with black?
it was introduced by Minolta and Sony is continuing the “tradition”. There are also some benefits when you are using large lenses in the full sun.
Great content, but woah! Color levels on your face are way over saturated
I learn as I go my friend. 😂
Beast of a lens for sure but only suitable if you do portraits! Otherwise i feel 100400 is a much better option. I sold my 70200 GM and got 100400GM
If this lens gets only a 4.5star from you, what's a 5 star lens?? lol!
Ill let you know when I find it.
135 GM?
i am the frist
thx so the quality in your video changed my mind will not buy
Just picked this up today and keen to play with it. My only complaint so far, the colour is ugly as shite. Really needs a skin
The colour is the one thing that makes this lens stand out in the crowd. Everyone knows what you have for a beast from a distance. It is prestige. Signature. I wouldn't like this if it was black and just blends in to the cheap telezoom lenses. This needs to be white like Ferraris have to be red.
@@pearce1984 Absolutely agree! This is one of the reasons why people are still buying this white beast instead of the tammy 70-180 despite of its hefty price and weight.
The king? Too funny
it is not the king, it was never the king of anything....
Ha, King of nothing. Both the Nikon E and EF mkII/III optically overtakes this, nor mention those are DSLR lenses and their mirrorless counterparts are slightly sharper than their old DSLR ones. And this is still very expensive 720 2.8. You even made a video showed how Sony's own 100-400GM outperforms this. How could you call it a king. Clickbait?
For people shopping for a 720 2.8, you can definitely say modern lenses are all good enough. Their difference is rather maginal and you can be happy with anyone. But for me, I spend a huge investment on every single one of these lenses. I need to make sure every single cent goes to the right place. The best 720 2.8 for sony is rather to adapt Canon and sacrifice auto focus. But it is ok for me as I only shoot landscape. If you don't need corner sharpness though. Just buy the GM, forget the rest. But don't believe you walked home with the best/King of 720 2.8.
Were talking Sony 70-200 f2.8's here..
@@StefanMalloch Didn't I?
Also, after further reseach I was able to find out, the new Tamron 70-180 is basically 99% performance of this lens being light weight and cheap and even beating it at some focal length. Albeit without stabilisation but it is lighter to begin with. The GM is about 4 years old. Sigma has their 70-200 2.8 on the horizon. And I have every reason to believe that lens can be equally as sharp or even better at a lower price, according to how the new 85 1.4 DG DN performed. If you absolutely need a telezoom for Sony, just get the tamron, and see what Sigma has to offer, and then decide whether you would need to sell the tamron for the sigma. And by that time Sony probably has to step in with a refresh or some sort as no one would need to shell out 2.6k for a lens worse off or not really any better than cheaper counter parts. Evein in the Sony system, this lens is never really the king.
The king? Of what? The FE mount? More like it’s now a soft spot in Sony’s line up. The new lenses from Nikon and Canon are already both better lenses.
So the canon 70-200 on a7ii good?
