The whole thing is essentially an Argument by assertion. The drop in standard and intellectual rigor and honesty between this one and the previous couple of interviews is quite staggering.
God is infinite. We are created in his image (not physical). We have his emotions. We can feel like he does, but not to the same extent. Through the holy spirit, we can have a personal connection with God, ready for interaction at all times. Because of that, he is continuously experiencing our lives with us. Our choices will affect his emotions. He does not know everything we are going to do. He wouldn't have created all of us if that was the case. That would be like writing a book for the purpose of reading it. He does not get worried about our choices, because he DOES already know what the end of his "story". He does not change. Changing emotion does not necessarily mean a changing God. All emotion stems from love, and God is pure love. I can't imagine a perfect God that is emotionless. Incompatible.
God doesn't change his mind. He is the Creator and He continues to create. He creates (responds) to our choices. He has infinite plans. There's always a backup plan. True perfection is hard to understand. Especially when I say that every choice we make fits into His plan.
Blessed be you who read this with a searching heart! As followers of Jesus, we experience a loving God. In fact, the Trinity (Son, Father and Holy Spirit) are bound up in infinite mutual love. See all of John 17 for the loving relationship of Jesus with his Father and his relationship with those of us who are his followers. We have been given by the Father to Jesus to learn of his love and to increase that in the world. That is to be our mission until his return. Our course as humans has resulted in efforts that have been at best imperfect and in some cases counterproductive to the nature of a loving God. I can only imagine his profound sadness when judgement, hatred and even death have been carried out in his name. Such is this world. Blessed be you in the midst of all of this!
Let's be clear what's happening in these interviews and discussions: the interviewer asks what it's like to be God, or what God is like, and the interviewee reports on what humans have thought about God in the past or what they think about God. So we're examining what humans have thought or currently think about God and not about the true nature of God. What humans have thought God is may be entirely wrong and misconceived, which doesn't get us any closer to a true understanding of God. So how can we know God? By listening to what other humans have to say about God? That's a circular process and yet throughout history this is what humans have done. The Blind leading the blind - except the Blind (prophets, academics, theologians, etc.) believe they can see! How do you break this circle? The only answer I can find is by personal experience and reflection. If you want to understand and know God they you need to experience God first hand. But maybe first you might want to consider what we really mean when we use the world "God". That might help you to understand God.
God changing from happy to sad and concerned in Greg Boyd's argument is the *red herring fallacy*. When Greg should know the change is in morals that god would need like stop promoting slavery, which is written in both the old and new testament. Why would a god need Greg Boyd to lie for Him, or praise Him? Why would a god need anything?
To say God promotes slavery is an oversimplification. He had instructions/commands in place for how slaves were and weren't to be treated, so while God wasn't against slavery, I think it's fair to say God was against their mistreatement, which we can see in both old and new testament. (I can look up specific verses/passages if you like, or you can elaborate how or where you see God's morals change) God actually commands people not to commit false testimony/witness, and liars are among those Revelation 21:8 reads will be cast into "the lake that burns with fire and briimstone". The God of the Bible wants people who worship in spirit and in truth, who speaks against deception and lies--he wouldn't want people to lie at all, especially not for Him. God doesn't need people to praise Him, Jesus said God could raise up children of Abraham from the stones (Matthew 3:9) and that if Jesus' disciples were silent even the very stones would cry out (Luke 19:40). "why would a God need anything" sounds very much like Acts 17:24-29 how "God is not served by human hands as if he needed anything" What God wants is faith hope and love, and I think it's what the people around us need to see/experience. I think scriptures is more about our need for grace/mercy/reconciliation. We're the ones in trouble if we don't believe God (John 3:18; 1 John 5:10)
lost in sin and apathy Shut up religitard. God is dead, I know because I had to kill Him for moral reasons. By the way, don't wait up for Santa, he's not coming.
And He freely laid down His life and died for the joy set before Him, but He came back with the keys of death and hades, and now lives to interceed for you, that where He is you may be too, He loves you as the Father loved the Son. While God's hatred for sin requires punishment, His love freely offers to take it in our place. He never wanted your sin to seperate you from Him. (treating you as I would want to be treated in your shoes, I can't believe in God and act as if it's not His universe)
God sees each person's heart, He'll judge righteously and not based on stereotypes or preconcieved notions or incomplete knowledge, something I am incapable of. The same warnings against arrogance apply to me. Actually I have very little concept of the reality of God, I imagine I'd be living rather differently if I did. I hope you won't hold it against me that I didn't do more to reach or love you.
I agree with Malaclypse. There is little insight to this defense for those who are not already predisposed to the ideology Boyd obviously espouses. Most of the central argument is based in convenient conjecture, a sort of thought that will almost certainly not bring us closer to any truth.
I don't agree. If God changed He would be subject to time, therefore, not infinite, neither would He know the future because in order to be impacted you cannot be omniscient.
He’s not a robot he has feelings we were made in his image. He can be happy and angry. And he can change his mind. That doesn’t mean he didn’t know that would happen he’s all knowing.
2:26 don't agree, because then God would be subject to contingency, wouldn't be infinite, outside of time, parallel to the unfolding of the universe, and therefore, not the Cause of the universe. If "He" is Infinite in compassion, because, "He" is love he doesn't need to adapt to a situation because "He" comprises everything.
So God is all powerful, all knowing, all present, yet can change his mind, can be personally affected by circumstance and petition, but may not be - that's up to him. But if he does intercede or change then he must know how he is going to change his Mind ahead of time, or be personally moved by petition as well as aware of all the ramifications of such changes a head of time, so he knows everything that is was and can be at all times, and can change what is and will be at will, because he is all knowing and all powerful. But why he does and doesn't change or intercede we can never, we can't even know if its really a change or part of the original plan - all we can do is have faith that whatever is happening God has decided for whatever reason to let it. In other words, don't worry - be happy.
Very good theology and spiritual work. It’s refreshing and alive. Thanks Greg Boyd.
To all the haters in the comment section - get a life.

"Argument by assertion"…kind of like this comment?
“Argument by assertion?” That makes no sense.

Remember that he is an open theist
Great, he believes the bible!
Yay!

Serious question ; God is very old , is it possible for God to become senile ?

This is rich. I call this the Area 51 of godtalkers.
Can't wait for the episode: "What Does God Do For Fun?"
This is truly breakthrough material folks.

"White noise." ~ Christopher Hitchens
Yes, Hitchens described his drivel pretty well.

Hm, I see the point differently, not so much as God changing, but fluctuating
openTheism.
This man is turning himself inside out He is just a little pregnant How the hell does he know the mind of his make believe god ???? Beats ME
God is the black woman end of story
Awesome!!!
This guy is just making shit up. He just invents qualities a god should have despite there being no evidence period.

How poor thinking. God have character? Very primitive.
