So, the thing historically is that New York *was* the interim capital of the newly formed US.
Hamilton exchanged the power to create the financial system that largely still makes the country possible to have *by giving the Southerners the capital in the South.* Washington DC *wasn't a thing yet,* this is what made it a thing.
So yes, that is in fact the compromise... and Hamilton got what he wanted, and as everyone agrees: New York is the financial capital. So he was fine giving it away--"selling it down the river" by giving the capital to the South--to get the banks.

And correct me if I am wrong but the financial system he created was for the government to pay of state debts and created a taxation system to pay of debts This Legacy though I am not sure if it still in place definitely outlived him

adding, we actually don't know more details than that. Literally as the song states, no one else was in the room where it happened. They literally walked into a room on two opposing sides and came out with this sort of agreement but we don't know how they got to that point and the only claims we have are from the parties that needed to make themselves look good so they are biased.

Forgive me, I'm not entirely sure of U.S. History, but why was this transaction so important? Why did it matter where the US capital was? Sorry if I'm missing something obvious I just don't understand.

Hamilton made the right move. The southerners wanted the Capitol in their area and Hamilton wanted banking power. But in the end the location never mattered. Give your opponent a superficial victory to take a position You wanted/needed.

6:56 "Or did you know EVEN THEN it doesn't matter where you put the US capital?"
One of my favorite lines in the show, Burr's modern day actor steps in for a line to ask Hamilton a question with 200 years of hindsight.

  • @stellasdoesstuff

Even just from a character perspective, this is one of the best songs in the show.
At the beginning, Hamilton says to Burr, "I guess I'll finally have to listen to you: talk less, smile more." It's a significant change for his character, and just the start.
Meanwhile, Burr realizes that what he has been doing ISN'T WORKING. He has been frustrated that Hamilton is shameless with his opinions, (in Wait for It: "Hamilton doesn't hesitate, he exibits no restraint. He takes and he takes and he takes and he takes") but now, just as Hamilton is showing some measure of restraint for the first time, Burr realizes that the only reason Hamilton is in the room was because of his outspokenness.
And then Hamilton calls him out on it, referencing both Aaron Burr, Sir and Wait For It: "When you've got skin in the game you stay in the game. But you don't get to win unless you're playing the game. You get love for it, you get hate for it, you get NOTHING if you wait for it. ... I want to make something that's gonna outlive me. What do you want Burr? If you stand for nothing Burr, what will you fall for?"
Hamilton is making it crystal clear that if Burr continues to stay neutral, if he refuses to play the game, he will never win. And Burr finally admits: "I want to be in the room where it happens".
This was the moment Burr decided he was sick of staying on the sidelines and wanted to play the game. Hamilton took Burr's advice, and now Burr will take Hamilton's.

This is a really interesting turning point in the story. Basically up to this point, the story has painted Hamilton as the one who will throw caution to the wind and run headlong toward what he wants "like he's running out of time". Meanwhile, Burr is the one who prefers playing things safe, playing the social game and will "wait for it" by keeping neutral until he can bandwagon onto the winning side. As Burr points out in Non-Stop, because he came from an influential family while Hamilton came from nothing, Hamilton basically had nothing to lose and everything to gain, while Burr had very little to gain and everything to lose.
In The Room Where it Happens, we see Hamilton begin to play the social game by wining and dining Jefferson and Madison and compromising for the first time in the story to get what he wants out of them. Meanwhile, Burr finally finds something he wants desperately to chase with all his might - he wants to be one of the important players making important decisions. Musically, we hear Burr extending and singing with a lot more passion and desperation than usual toward the end of this song.

"Schuyler Defeated" Should be the next song on the list, my guy. Very excited to be this deep into Act 2! We're rapidly approaching the best and most emotional moments in the show! If I might make a recommendation, the next 3 tracks, "Schuyler Defeated", "Cabinet Battle #2", and "Washington On Your Side" are all much smaller tracks, and are a little confusing to jump into the middle of Cabinet or Washington without the immediate context of where the previous track left off. I'd HIGHLY recommend either reacting to those videos back to back to back on the same day, or rolling them all into the same video so you can experience them while the previous video is still fresh in your mind. Love all your work! Have a great day!

It wasnt zoned off yet. Any state could have set aside an area for the capital. There were over 5 proposed locations in addition to The Potomac river and New York City. What Hamilton agreed to do was to use his influence and persuasion to convince those in his party to all vote for Virginia as the capital while they agreed to use their influence and persuasion to convince their party to vote for his financial plan.

Lots of songs in Hamilton have little moments where they make a nod to previous songs or stuff that happened between the characters, which, as someone who watch/listen to the whole show in order, is so satisfying, but can also leave people going in blindly a little perplexe. So i really recommend as many said, that you watch the whole show in order tbh !

The Room Where It Happens was initially the most striking song in the show to me - the choreography, the performance, and Aaron Burr finally realizing that he, too, has to go beyond 'waiting for it'. Also the wildin' piano that you mentioned towards the end, loved that. Luckily, no one got shot yet. I think it's more the leitmotif of 'I am not throwing away my shot' that is reinforced here in Burr's own way. I love the double meaning of 'selling New York City down the river'. Honestly, I have nothing but praise for this one, but especially this:
The point of view we experience here. Most of us were convinced up until here that we were watching the show from Hamilton's point of view. But if that was so, why do we not know what happened in that room? It's because this musical is happening entirely in Burr's pov. It's such a subtle but important nod.

Go back to the beginning of the song. It’s indirectly about the banks. The banks assume greater importance because of the debt plan. And to recognize Alexander’s reach, you only have to consider one thing. Whenever Washington come up with a idea now, the question is usually asked- how will The Street respond?

  • @gracegaert
    @gracegaert 2 роки тому +1

The historical context is that the capital was in New York. It also housed the primary bank. Jefferson and the other Democratic-Republicans wanted the capital to be moved further south for easier access for them. Hamilton was in charge of the Treasury and didn’t want the banks to move because then he would lose control of them. The compromise was that the capital can be moved, but the banks stay in New York

The next song is technically Schuyler Defeated, however it is very short. I recommend watching that one without a reaction and then jumping to reacting to the song after it which is Cabinet Battle #2. But that's my opinion. If you do want to react to it, though, it's like 1min and fades right into cabinet battle 2 so you could do both of them together in one video, also.

I hope you can listen to the musical "Starry: A New Musical" one of these days! In a historical musical (similar to Hamilton), it's a pop-rock musical that tells the story of Vincent Van Gogh and his younger brother Theo. It's an emotional musical but SUCH a ride to listen to! They just got a workshop approved on The West End, and I couldn't be more excited, so in honor of that, you should listen to "United In Distaste" which features the song of Van Gogh meeting the Post-Impressionists for the first time. (I recommend pulling up the lyrics and perhaps a tiny bit of googling so you can understand the story better, but it's WORTH IT)
Either that song or the Yellow House, if you want a fun, bouncy dynamic between Vincent, his new roommate Paul Gauguin, and his brother Theo, the songs feature the letters written between them, but it's a comedy relief song more than anything, but it's easier to follow!

Your next song (Schuyler Defeated) is pretty short btw, I recommend combining it with Cabinet Battle #2, which is after that :)

New York City was used as a temporary capitol. But there was a lot of debate at the time about whether people wanted to be ruled from a distant capitol or have it closer to home where they might be more understood. There was also a lot of difference and division between the northern and southern states, even back then. What I was taught back in grade school was that putting the capitol at the Potomac River would put it roughly in the middle of the 13 original states, and putting it on the border between Virginia and Maryland meant that no single state could claim the honor of hosting the nation’s capitol. What they talk about it here in the play has a lot to do with the positioning of the banks, which I’m not that familiar with. It sounds like Hamilton was making it look like he offered a trade, when really it was his idea all along. I should fact check that sometime.

I see this as the apex of Burr's conflict in the story. Hamilton fought for what he wanted and got New York to be the financial capital of the country, regardless if it was not the actual capital. Burr thinks you just have to wait for a long time before these sorts of things happen. Now, he's compelled by Hamilton's prodding to fight for what he wants sooner rather than later.

The mainreason there was divide on where to put capt. Was the north vs. South. Each side blieved that if the capt. Was closest to them it give them more power. Hamilton was from the north .

The next song is technically Schuyler Defeated, but it’s very short. It leads directly into Cabinet Battle #2 which leads directly into Washington On Your Side. You could react to them all together if you want or do Schuyler Defeated and Cabinet Battle together and Washington separately or just what them each separately. Whichever you choose will be great because now we’re getting into the ✨drama✨

While I don't know much about hamilton, I'd really love for you to listen to YonKaGor! He was a fast favourite of mine and I have a few of his songs I adore! My recommendations are Mr. Sunfish, Paper Alibis, Dandelion, Another Mistake, You Made Me Fall In Love, and I Forgot That You Exist. I'd also like to recommend "It's Normal" but since the aritist sepcified that the song is prohibited for use I'd like for that to be a personal listen to.

Well, a huge part of the reason they wanted it farther north was population distribution. New York was a candidate, but Philadelphia was a more popular one. Back then many more people (not counting slaves, of corse) were living farther north because it was more densely settled and the south was mostly really spread out and sprawling plantations, so it would be way more accessible to more people farther north.
There were many more reasons people gave for other locations so Im not even scratching the surface, but don’t forget how much longer travel took back then. Boats were faster than carriages(so basically every proposed location was on a river) but where the capital was actually going to be would have always been a much bigger deal back then than it is now because is much easier to move things a distance nowadays. That goes for people, commerce, news, and weapons, and you would also want a position that is ideally easily accessible and if necessary defendable. And if you want people to live there, a preexisting city is nice, but you definitely need to be able to build there.
Another thing that’s interesting is the the capitals of other countries at the time had been decided a long time ago, and Im guessing that this was likely one of the first times a capital was to be chosen by a committee of people all trying to agree on what was the most optimal option, instead of what city just grew the most prosperous, or where the king moved.
DC was not easy to build on, but in case you didn’t know it did use to be a perfect square. The bottom part was taken by Virginia, and the stone that marks the original bottom corner of DC still stands, near a terribly congested intersection at rush hour and a temple built by the freemasons. I think it was taken in the civil war, but Im not completely sure.

Hey Hooman, I think you should give the channel Aviators and their dong "Incandescent" it's a great feel good song despite the game it is based on Dark Douls being a grim, seemingly hopeless land.
Another channel you should check out is Miracle of Sound with their song "Tale of Cu Chulainn" it is anout the Irish Celtic legend of Cu Chulainn. I think it is really well put together and it has some great drums to go with it, and some lyrics even being in Irish Gaelic. (Cu Chulainn may or may not be my favorite mythological hero (thanks Fate/Stay Night)).
