Just wanted to say. THIS METHOD HAS REVOLUTIONIZED MY PIECING. Ideas have exploded in my head and I can't keep up with all of them. So I started keeping a diary of quilt pattern suggestions. If I don't get to make them maybe whoever inherits it will try a few. Still passing on your wonderful method. You have made me feel so smart. I tell anyone that sees my quilts to watch your channel. I get so excited to share you with all my friends. Happy Quilting. 😉
THIS IS GENIUS!! My first quilt had these sashing posts and it was a nightmare, for me, to get everything perfectly aligned. What a headache!! I swore I would NEVER do them again!! When I saw this post I was amazed at the simplicity and you cannot mess it up - perfect alignment 😁 Thank you Susan, you're a quilting angel 💖
I am a beginner quilter although I have sewed for years. I have just found your channel and I love your videos - so practical, inspiring and , for me, “do-able”! Thank - you!
Your teaching style is great! No "extra" talking, straight forward and at a good pace. Really enjoyed your video and I will be making my newly born grandson a quilt with this pattern. Thank you!
I must have watched this first many years ago! Then I have a quilt to do with cornerstones and thought I had better check UA-cam….. and Lo and Behold… here you are with the best cornerstone tutorial!! So much better than long strips. Thank you
I am a beginner in quilts. Haven't sewed thought for years dues to 2 strokes. Watching this, you showed how to do a beginner quilt that I can start with and I will understand better how to do the sashings a lot easier. Thanks
I'm making a small drunkerd's path and do not want the blocks be too close, so I will use this excellent lesson . Thank you very much. I'm your fan from Barcelona.
An understandable and simple method of accomplishing something that seems difficult. Lovely quilts and I, too, love the sound of your accent. Delightful.
I'm a beginner an was looking at totorials on quilting ect,, as I'm making my grandaughter a quilt,, came across your totorial an tried this today ,, I'm so very pleased with the result thanks to your help an instructions ,, I'll be watching more love it x
Thank you for all your excellent videos. The process of putting these blocks together with the sashing and corner stones attached to each block allows the quilt to be more accurate. I love this. Your completed quilts in this pattern are beautiful - I especially love the blue one! Thank you for all you do to help us quilter's create better quilts.
Brilliant, thank you! I’ve just come back to watch today as I used this method a few years ago and it worked so well, now I’m ready to use it again on my pieced blocks.
I am making a rail fence quilt with 10 1/2" blocks. Couldn't figure out an easy way to add cornerstones until I watched your video. Thanks so much for doing this video.
This technique is amazing!!!!! I was just trying to figure this out in my head the other day. Turned on You Tube and their you were teaching the best method ever. I can see that you always know what you are doing by your confidence while you see and demonstrate. Thank You for taking the time to teach the novice. I then in turn teach at least three others in Illinois and I am in Ca. Thank God for the age of digital photography and the internet and YOU!!!
Oh my gosh! This so much simpler than the way I had been doing this! I am definately going to put the posts in this way from now on! Thanks a million for this terrific tutorial!
I have a quilt that I started years ago at out church then my husband received orders to another base. I have been left with the squares for almost 6 years, not knowing how to assemble them. This video has taught me so much and I will finally be able to finish my sons quilt.
Really helpful tutorial... I've just pieced a quilt of 22"x10"" rectangles, with contrasting sashing & cornerstones following your method & it came together so quickly and neatly. Thank you for these awesome tips!!
Watched this for the 3rd time today because today I need to do this, and remembered your excellent video showing so clearly how to do this. Thank you for sharing this with us.
This is for sure the very best way I have found to do cornerstones. I tried to do them a couple times with the long sashings and it was just a hot mess. I haven't tried again for awhile. I had a really pretty pattern I wanted to try and started looking for another way to do cornerstones. When I found your video I knew that was it. Your instructions are clear and this is just the easiest way. They came out just perfect. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am looking forward to putting cornerstones on a lot more quilts. Have a blessed day.
I've seen this done many different ways but your way is SO much easier!! Your instruction is so clear and easy to follow. Thank you so much for sharing! Your finished quilts are lovely!
I’ve just watched your video and thought the method used was lovely! Thank you for sharing even though I’ve only seen it 7 years after you made it! . I hope you are still quilting!
Hi, thanks for watching. Yes, I am still quilting, there are lots of videos on my GourmetQuilter channel and also patterns on the website www.gourmetquilter.com. I use this way of putting sashings on all the time.
Thank you so much for your tutorial and showing your completed quilts as well. Both quilts are beautiful. My brand new quilting group is still in it's infancy and we're all still learning together how to quilt. We received a wonderful gift of several hundred pre-cut 5" by 5" squares by our local senior center and we just LOVE this idea of putting the sashing and the corner block on. What an easy way to keep everything straight and in line. Your a wonderful teacher.
You’re amazing. I have loved every tutorial that I’ve watched on your channel and I’ve watched least 10. I love your colour choice your patterns to make it look doable. I am a beginner and I’ve only been sewing and karate for about five months 50%. And I’m so grateful that I found your channel. How do you so standing up you’re amazing thank you for the great tutorials. I will be trying to 5 inch block pattern.
It helped immensely! I’ve been attaching my squares and dashing in long rows and then sewing them all together, it never turns out as straight and neat as I’d like it. Thank you!
I made my 8 grandchildren a quilt each for last Christmas (first time quilter!!) but used solid yardage, although they look lovely I didn't feel confident enough to use blocks. After watching your tutorial I feel I can do this, so I've now ordered some 5" charm packs and hope to make a quilt for myself, at least if it goes wrong nobody will see it, LOL. Thanks for this tutorial.
This is my absolutely *favourite* beginner quilting video, and is likely one of the first I ever watched on UA-cam after I began my 'fabric acquisitionist' hobby back in 2012 (and then soon thereafter realized that generous quilters such as yourself have video'ed and posted helpful tutorials such as this one). I immediately began cutting (only some) of the strips and posts needed to join four charm packs together into a quilt -- I learned later that it's best to do all of your cutting first before beginning assembly, so you don't run out of any one fabric!). It was so exciting working on that first quilt top! I have watched hundreds and hundreds of UA-cam videos since then, but none have been as useful to me as this one. Did you ever imagine back in 2013 that you'd have 80 thousand subscribers to this channel, and over 311,000 views of just this video? Amazing! And that your online business would grow to the point where you are travelling worldwide with your craft? I bought those QuiltMania magazines, specifically for your Japanese Dolls pattern... and am now eyeing your "Metro Tiles" pattern with its quilt-as-you-go technique. Thank you for all you do for the quilting community, Susan-Claire, you are a rare gem among gems. Cheers. ~Diana from Toronto (Canada)
I’ve always been too insecure about using corner blocks but now I’ve tried your tutorial and ta-da! Success! I have lots of 5” squares so I’ll be whipping them up in no time, thanks to your wonderful tutorial. Thank you for sharing your marvellous talent, especially with a novice like me. 😊 You’re so right, quilting IS delicious 🙏
I just love your work I've been following you for a few years and I love this idea I love that Blue Quilt and I have so many blue Fabrics that I'm going to try this with thank you so much for posting these delicious videos!
I have made quilts which corner stone in the past. Wow I wish I had seen your tutorial first. This is so easy compared to the way I did mine. Thank You so much for the great tutorial. Your quilts are beautiful. Thanks and Blessings to you!
I was told to put setting blocks in, so I was looking for that phrase, thank you so much for showing me how to do just that. I really love this video. Thank you.
You can strip piece the posts to the LENGTH of the sashing bits onto post colors and then sub-cut at the width you prefer. Not throughout the quilt but at least part of them 5 x WOF and 2 x WOF and then subcut at 2 inches. This is an excellent video for explaining how this process works. I searched for it when I was trying to explain to a friend how to pre-sash. I figured this out a long time ago on my own, before there was such a thing.
Thank you for this perfect way to put sashing and posts in one's quilt! I agree, it is awkward to make the long strip and try to match everything up. Downright frustrating most of the time. This way, though, is enjoyable and works beautifully! You have a very nice teaching style.
Thank you for the clear instructions. I've used your instructions with sashings and posts and the results were stress free and beautiful. I always learn something from your videos than I can use in my quilt making.
I REALLY love the colors in the quilt being made!! It looks so "Spring-y" or "Summer-y" and fresh! I would love to see it finished. Thank you so much for this tutorial, especially the advice at the end regarding using the same color posts! I was going to ask about that! I was so scared about making looooong, skinny strips, trying to keep them pinned in place, and lined up correctly; this is a lifesaver!!
Thanks so much. Very helpful. No longer dreading the fight with sashing. I have a quilt I’ve been wanting to do, but dreaded the sashing. Excited to tackle it now. Thank you!
Great tips. I was in the middle of making a quilt and used your technique. Thanks for the great tutorial. I'll be coming back again to see what else I can learn from you. Cheers.
I´ve just watched your delicious tutorial. A wonderful idea. Just bought two charm packs and now I know, how to bring them into a nice quilt. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Geeting from Germany!
wow, thank you! Yes, this does allow more accuracy, which I like although am not a fanatic on! Thank you for the comments on the quilts, the blue one is rather yummy! I am thrilled to think that these videos may be helping quilters, I just love to make quilts myself!
i watched this tutorial some time ago , I am just getting round to making a large 5 inch square quilt with sashing and cornerstones so happy for your tutorial it will make it so much easier , rather than the long strip in between each row and your right i can chain so much of it to be faster. Thank you so much I'm a fan
Thank you so much for your videos, I enjoy them a bunch. Just getting started in quilting and have only done a couple and was stuck on how to do the sashing. You cleared it up for me. I love working with the 5 inch squares and buy them from a wonderful lady on ebay (suebeh) I have now over a thousand squares and all hand cut. Just finished doing 270 squares for my granddaughters engagement gift. Now I can sash it and get it finished. I'm doing the Queen size quilt in 6 sections. It will be easier to quilt, I have a new Grace frame but haven't been able to figure how to use it. Some Day.
Oh my goodness! I wish I had a dollar for every time I've wrestled loo-o-ong strips of sashing and tried to line up the corner posts accurately - I'd be a wealthy woman! Susan, your method is utterly brilliant and thank you so much for sharing it. Suddenly, I need to make quilts for my nieces... :D
Thank you so much Susan. I love making quilt tops but wrestling a big quilt through a home sewing machine is just too difficult. Sashing like this has enabled me to work with and quilt four large squares, made up of several smaller blocks - then join them as in your QAYG video. Easy for me and I do enjoy a bit of hand sewing. Thank you again Susan. Even big quilts are now possible.😄
I am getting ready to make my first quilt. Thank you so much for creating this tutorial. You explain it in detail for me to understand it. Looking forward to viewing all your other tutorials in the future. Thanks again
This was a great tutorial. Sashing can be tricky with misalignment especially for long strips. This is a very simple but sure way to make a beautiful quilt with sashing! Thank you so much for sharing!
Susan, this is a wonderful tutorial. I would have never tried that out, but your technique is brilliant and you have explained it so well. Thank you so much. Gudrun from Germany
Thank you so much for all your helpful tutorials. I just finished my first big quilt with 100 blocks, and used your sashing method. It all came out amazingly square !! You are a very creative awesome lady !
Thank you for sharing this technique. I was just getting ready to put my quilt blocks together and discovered this video. I’ve just now finished sewing my sashing and posts and am getting ready to sew everything together. I can see how this technique helps everything line up so well. 👏👏👏
Thank you for such a thorough explanation on sashing. I started quilting about a year ago, and have struggled trying to match the sashing. Your technique is amazing! Makes it so much easier to match everything. Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial. I look forward to watching more of them.
Thank you very much.for your tutorials..you make it look quite easy. I have quite a lot of 5 inch squares I will get them sorted out and go for my life.....hopefully it will turn out as nice as yours....
I've just watched your tutorial and am ancious to apply your technique. I am not a new quilter, however really appreciate your sharing. My next scrappy quilt with sashing and corner blocks will go together much more efficiently.
I love your videos and I am so grateful for your insight and teaching in such a way that I can follow your line of thinking. You are appreciated :-) Thanks for all you do! Many blessings, E.
Watching this 10 years after you posted it. I am a beginner quilter and this is great to learn from. Thank you.

I love the way you to teach - very methodical and straightforward. Thank you so much for this technique that I plan to use soon.
Brilliant, thank you! I’ve just come back to watch today as I used this method a few years ago and it worked so well, now I’m ready to use it again on my pieced blocks.
Me too!
As a beginner, visual tutorials are priceless! I have been scared of cornerstones until I watched your video 😊 Thanks for sharing!
That’s a great system. Much better then making miles and miles of strips and cornerstone that doesn’t match the quilt.🌸💕
Yes, this is a wonderful idea to keep things from getting wavy! I love this!
Sashing made easy! Beautiful quilts. Your instructions are so clear, it took the mystery out of what seemed like a complicated quilt.
