English being his second language, Stavros mistook Reagan and Gorbachev discussing banning/reducing the Nuclear Arsenals, with banning the Arsenal football club, aka The Gunners.
LOADSAMONEY! is one of his best! ua-cam.com/video/ULeDlxa3gyc/v-deo.html
If you're a Londoner, the Greek cockney accent is all too familiar! You wanna da bloodly chilli sauce, innit?
Stavros was the first Harry Enfield character l ever saw, great to see him again!
Agree, same for me, this is the reaction a lot of us have been waiting for!
And Loadsofmoney.
Saw Stavros and Loads a Money live on Friday Night live, best saying .... he was"Going up the Ars" (Arsenal) lol
He's talking about the Arsenal football club ( The Gunners). They're a north London football club. North London has a large Greek Cypriot community.
To add one more clarification, Arsenal is also the word for your stockpile of weapons. The missing link of the joke.
@@FrowningIkethe Arsenal football club was originally the Royal Arsenal Football Club located in Woolwich, south of the River. It was HUGE production facility for shells, bombs and artillery, hence 'Gunners'.
@@davebox588 Yeah I know. I was keeping it simple for him. More intricate details only ever enhance knowledge though so thank you.
@@FrowningIke Both my parents worked at Woolwich Arsenal at one time or other. Dad was a huge Arsenal supporter and reminded me constantly that Highbury wasn't their real 'Home'. He wasn't even born then, but I imagine symbolism is important for folk. Especially with footer as a religion.
He's confusing the nuclear arsenal with Arsenal football team, thinking there's a summit to get rid of Arsenal football club.
Hi King Boomer thanks for your reactions. This brings back memories. Stavros was based on a real person a local kebab shop owner called Adam from Cyprus and he actually sounded and talked like that apart from serving great kebabs. Harry lived around the corner. Unfortunately Adamos passed away earlier this year.
This is that well known British accent “Greek-Norf-Lahnden”. The barber I used to go to (another Cypriot profession, for some reason) in the late 1970’s was “George” to everyone and had almost exactly this accent - ending every sentence with “innit?” but also had a tendency to mumble. The result was that you could sit in the chair for a half hour monologue about the latest update on him and his brother building a house in Cyprus (“in mountain, innit? not beach with all bloody tourist”) without knowing when to make the appropriate sounds of approval/disbelief/astonishment.
Another old Harry Enfield character was 'Tim Nice-but-Dim'. Worth a peep.
Soccer fans at the time were more likely to sing "You're going home in a f***king ambulance" rather than welcome to our hospitality.
Not forgetting the classic "you're gonna get your 'ed kicked in!"
His character was likely mishearing that they were going to send the rival team to hospital.
My mate and I used to cry laughing at Stavros, but would watch the tumbleweeds rolling past during anything else Harry Enfield ever did!
His character that always stood out to me from Friday Night Live/Saturday Live was 'Bugger all money'...
I thought it was "Loadsaaaa Moneyaaaaay". 🤟
@@DansTele88 Two different characters, 'Loadsamoney was was wealthy and from the south, Bugger All Money was a Geordie with bugger all money...
@@ste.6026 Whaaaaat, That's fkn funny that, gonna search for it now, thanks mate 🤟
A lot of Greek Cypriots supported Arsenal, because that was the general area in London alot of them first emigrated too..Alot of the kebab shops had a picture of the 1971 Arsenal double winning team and the Queen Mother on the wall behind the counter.. Stavros used to comment in them..He'd say "I luvva the Queen mums, and the Sharlie George..Pride of the Arse"
Hallo Everybody Mighty Peeps, this is Stavros 'ere innit, I like da Arse!
The show was original Saturday Live before being moved to Friday and changing to Friday Live - it was a similar sort of format to Saturday Night Live with a combined of comedy and music. It was normally populated with people from the 80’s Alternative Comedy circuit like Ben Elton and the Dangerous Brothers Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayall.
They should've kept its name as Saturday Live to confuse Americans. That would've been gold dust 😂
I saw Harry Enfield live at the Edinburgh Festival, which was great because he has not done much stand-up since then. He did Stavros, which was his big character at the time, then he introduced a new character which I hadn't seen before - Loadsamoney. The support act was Craig Ferguson, when he was still in his "Bing Hitler" persona.
Harry Enfield was one of the voice actors on Spitting Image. He used Stavros as the voice of George Michael.
That character was based on a sandwich bar owner in a part of East London, called Walthamstow.
Next to where I went to college prior to university.
Back in the day, after a big night out in the pubs (which all closed at 11.00) all the different tribes would head to the kebab shop (this is a kebab shop). There would be many fights and aggressive people. The shop owners could talk the loonies down with irrelevant questions and odd theories until the police turned up. This is the groundwork at the very start of the sketch.
"Loftus Road" :D QPR were one of the top London clubs in the 80s. Wish it was still like that today lol.
Harry Enfield in my youth, I liked this and the character Loadsa Money. He drove a classic Ford XR3i with a funny slogan across the back.
A remember one where he was complaining about all the violins on t.v.
Arsenal is a famous football club in the UK😂😂
He’s a Greek Londoner
Originally a puppet sketch on Spitting Image.
Good luck finding an example online though.
Stavros (and Loadsamoney) were the 1st Harry Enfield character's I ever saw on Friday Night Live back when I was a kid...loved them then and love them now!
Greece (Greek) + Football references + Harry Enfield = What more could KB Want! Defo check MORE out for sure!
And yep, you heard right! That right there was what got us rolling with laughter back in the day
The references was mostly about politics, world peace, English football clubs and Margate is a seaside town, it doesnt help cos with the accent he shortens words and sentences lol
Stavros speaks in broken English so he says "I come in England and my wife" as opposed to I came to England with my wife.
Thanks for clearing that up 🙄
The actual kebab shop owner he based Stavros on was interviewed on telly back in the day and the audience were in bits when they recognised certain phrases and inflections he used that Harry Enfield borrowed.
Yeah, the owner/operator of Harry's favourite kebab shop - although by the time he was interviewed he had moved on to a sandwich shop, deciding he was too old for the late nights of running a kebab shop. Jonathan Ross's show as I recall - with Harry Enfield in the audience.
I'm happy to close down Arsenal.
The clip makes more sense if you imagine coming into his shop at 3am on a saturday/sunday morning (and you grew up in the 80's, 90's and possibly noughties)
" Hello everybody peeps". " Her insida da doors". CLASSIC.
Arsenal, NICKNAME the gunners, are a London football team . He is getting mixed up with a Nuclear Arsenal !
Loved Harry's characters back on the 90s he was a true genius on his voice changes and accents 😂
It was traditional to eat a greasy kebab on the way home from a nights boozing, and have a laugh with the Greek Cypriot owner.
They were good barbers too , and mine would give me cans of beer while cutting my hair.
Hahaha Stavros, typing b4 I even watched
Loadsa money is one of his best characters- it’s another very old one worth checking out.
brilliant pure 80,s british humour.
He did a character called Loadsamoney & also one called Buggerallmoney, both worth a look, especially Bugger all😂
KB - PLEASE check out "On The Lavatory with Frank Hovis". He was a sketch character played by John Sparkes. Specifically, the episode called "TAXI". It only lasts a few minutes but it's an absolute gem
My Favourite Enfield Character
Nearly on 100k subs....Nice one muppet 👍
This was done in the very early 80’s. It was on the Ben Elton show.
Used to love Ade Edmonson and Rik Mayal on friday night live as the dangerous brothers. Another cracking series were the "comic strip presents"
Every week i'd look forward to Stavros's segment of that show.
I loved this back in the day it was a very character he did I preferred this with the loads a money character he did at the same time It was very 80’s Friday Night Live which could be really good or awful depending Stephen Fey used to do a monologue it was great 👍 thanks KB
dude, it was on the pulse at the time, the very talented Mr H.Enfield was throwing angles all over it, we grew to understand the characters over a few years, Harry.E was top.
Jurgen the german is another great Harry Enfield character KB.❤
Stavros was based on a real person who ran a kebab shop near Paul and Harry’s flat when they were younger. They both used to impersonate him behind his back. I’ve heard Paul Whitehouse do a Stavros impression and is very good.
I’ve never seen it before on UA-cam but id love someone to react to some of Ben Elton’s standup. He was the compare on this show and he co wrote blackadder and the young ones I think. He’s in that ilk anyway. He is also an author and has written at least one musical too
There's a saying about inuendo. ITS NOT THE MOUTH IT COMES OUT OF, BUT THE EAR IT GOES INTO!
Finally you got round to Stavros.
Hey king boomer, there is another Harry Enfeild and paul Whitehouse sketch show called "ruddy hell it's Harry and paul" there is a series of sketckes in there called "cafe polski" really funny
I have a dirty mind, too. You heard it correctly.
Hi King, just curious to know if you’ve seen any of the “Bottom” live shows? I’m sure you’d love it. Great reaction vid, as always, thanks 🤩🤗
Loved Stavros back in the day
Harry Enfield 😂
Innocent as the day is long this lad. He came to England and supports Arsenal. Not the nuclear arsenal..... but he knows nothing about that shenannigans, Comes from Greece - makes kebabs. Very popular. Learning English as he goes. Of course in Greece they put their verbs and adjectives in a different order. Very funny. Saved the nation in the eighties, our Stavros.
In one sketch ( as Stavros) Harry starts by saying “Hello, I very happy, my wife say I can go up the arse this weekend.” I happy,, they playing Chelsea.” (meaning his wife says I can go to the Arsenal v Chelsea football match,,,, not what you’d have been thinking ) 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 A great character by Harry
Oh yes have met many a stavros whilst living in haringey London as a student in early 90s. There were quite a few Greek or Cypriot shops and take always on West Green Road and Manor Park. 😂😂
Ps . Our landlord was even Greek. Loved to take the rent but never repaired anything!!!
Arsenal nicknamed the gunners, are a london based football team. His exaggerated greek accent always shortens certain words. There's one skit when talks about taking his wife up the arse meaning taking her to watch arsenal play 😂.
stavros and loadsa money put harry enfield on the comedy map. their catch phrases are still in use in english vernacular to this day.
You should check out Harry Enfields Telecockneys skit,it’s a parody of the kids show Teletubbies.
I feel every town had a Stavros selling kebab's and I fkn love them 😂
My dad’s business partners were Greek and Cypriot. Working with them was…….eventful lol. I was bridesmaid at many Greek weddings as a child and even had my own proposal when I was 11 lol
It's 30 years since he came to England with his wife.
You ought to watch Harry Enfield's "The Slobs" characters
I used to live just down the road from the real Stavros and his shop who Harry Enfield based this character on :)
Blimey I've not seen Stavros in years
You should check out Harry & Paul,
DJs Smashy & Nicey.
Probably one of their most popular characters.
They made quite a lot of them.
It's so funny watching this because he doesn't have a clue. It just demonstrates how humour is intrinsic to culture. You'd have to know about football, Arsenal, the kind of songs sung at matches...
Harry Enfield had many characters. Loadsa Money, Tim Nice but Dim, and so on. I think maybe this wasn't the best clip to start on. He was talking about Arsenal football club, also known as the Gunners, for obvious reasons.
Some rising damp and till death us do part reaction's wouldn't go amiss
And if my grandma had wheels...
Do try Absolutely fabulous Saffy having a baby and the midwife explaining the birth process. Your lady wife having gone through through the process herself will really appreciate it! It is presently on youtube
yes back in the 80s before he was famous with harry enfield and chums
Stavros and loadsamoney got him famous
@@andywatts8654 thats right
Glad you put this one on. I think you would also like Ben Elton who was on both Friday Night Live and Saturday Live in the 80s.
Fulham and The Arsenal London soccer teams, Arsenal nickname is the gunners
Harry nailed Greek-Cockney. Because immigrants tended to stay in their own communities, the accent could even cross generations leading to a Greek-Geezer hybrid people recognised.
You heard it right!
Ap the Arse, innit!
Paul whitehouse plays a drunk old English Lord in the fast show the last episode is part of British tv history please please if u read this check it out
Ih what happy memories, you know my budgie could say Hello everybody peeps. What a,great bird and beughbours used to liok stunned when rhey heard him say rhat PLEESE, PRETTY PKEASE VIEW WAYNE AND WAYNETTA SLOB 2 episodes are the best,c1 wirh Naomi Campbell has Waynes child and when the Slobs win the Lottery. Just have your tissue's at the ready This comes as a new scene but to us Brits is a happy trip down memory lane. Thanks peeps and ta ever so.😂😂🤣🤣🧒
The Kevin the Teenager sketches with Kathy Burke were also good I seem to remember.
Allo evryboddy peeps.
Init?
...and singing welcoming songs to the other fans. As Stavros is an Arsenal fan, he's probably singing inappropriately polite songs to the fans of their fierce local football rivals in north London Spurs , (Tottenham Hotspur)!! 😂😂😂
Summit for the reduction of the nuclear arsenal - poor old Stavros thinks it is to get rid of his favourite football team - Arsenal. A whole character written so he can talk about taking "his wife up the Ars!" - when he has taken her to the football match!!
Half the comedy is because he is speaking in broken English. Many first generation migrants to England didn't quite pick up the language properly. He based this character on a local Kebab shop owner.
the reason you dont understand because he acts drunk turkish like they got depicted back then
Arsenal 'aka the gunners' and saying Reagan getting rid of the Arsenal as in weapons of mass destruction, Stavros confusing the two.
Also 'comming in in england and wife' meant as in comming over to england but Harry Enfield playing on the broken english aspect and missing out or altering the joining words as many foreign people can tend to do, wasn't meant rude, at least I don't think it was.
He's just poking fun at friendly foreign kebab shop owners who often misunderstand UK culture etc.
Friday night live was like the English version of SNL we did our version for a few years.
It launched act such as Harry with characters Stavros and Loadsa money amongst others.
you got to try rhod gilbert!!!!
Yes i heard the same as you lol, come in England and my wife
Try loadsamoney it's another one of Harry's character
yes was a late night dirty comedy
Ello everybody peeps lol 😆😆
Love your channel fella, you laugh at all our stupid shit, and it is proper stupid, ❤❤😊
Saturday Live. Yes our version of your SNL. It made Enfield and many others. Ben Elton included, Blackadder...
Saturday Live was very much a 'flash in the pan' in the UK. I gather SNL is controversial in terms of 'is it really funny enough to still be a thing'. It was never shown in the UK, only the odd clip and reference makes it known in the UK. We know many North American comedians begun their careers on it.
React to Macho man randy savage promos
He come in England is….. since he came to England…….no sex reference….
Muppet watch brass eye plz it's the boss out of the IT crowd
I think there may be just a few too many cultural things in this video for you to fully appreciate, like I know you’ve got some background for understanding certain references, because of all the UK shows you’ve watched, but other than the Reagan stuff I would imagine almost all of that sketch would fly past a non British person
Innuendo he did say that deliberately
Hi K and Q Booms. I doubt very much that any of your subscribers under the age of 50 would remember Stavros. He would do a 4 min segment every week and it was the part of the show that I enjoyed the most. Previous to FNL no one had heard of Harry Enfield.
You are my goto reactor as we have a similar sense of humour and we like the same shows. Is this the correct forum for recommending shows? I have wanted to tell you, for a while now, of a show, which again many of your subscribers may not remember. The show is ‘The Day Today’. You would be the first channel to react to this show and it is masterful. It stars Christopher Morris (Denholm Reynholm) and, at the time, an unknown Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge). Please please please watch this. ( start with episode 1 as pilot not good)
I am 44 years old, so, therefore under the age of 50 and I very much remember Stavros!
Also, I must add that it's not strictly true that King Boomer's channel would be the first to react to 'The Day Today' as another channel has already reacted to 'The Day Today'.
