    Yeah, that game was a straight-up battle. USC’s game plan was clearly to make Aneesah Morrow’s life as tough as possible, and they executed it well. they threw multiple bodies at her all night. For Morrow to still get a double-double with the point guard play being a bit shaky is seriously impressive. She was fighting for every rebound and bucket, showing just how dominant she is this season. Pao Pao played her heart out too. It’s crazy to see how much talent is on display from both teams, but USC’s depth and defensive pressure ultimately won out. South Carolina’s defense is tough to crack, especially in front of that home crowd. They haven’t lost there in 5 years.

  • @pastorpersonality
    @pastorpersonality 9 днів тому +4

    The problem with the UCLA/SCar game is that it just wasn’t close. Gamecocks have gotten better but you’re right, they are not as dominant on the boards as the past two years. Especially when it comes to allowing offensive boards. Now with Ash out for the year, that issue won’t get fixed. They had no answer for Oldacre from Texas or Morrow on the glass.
    Dawn is trying to get Dauda more minutes but she doesn’t trust her yet. Same with the Tac and Walker.
    So the team will have to continue to play incredible defense.
    Offensively, gamecocks were off. Can’t remember the last time they only made 2 trays. I do think LSU will be the best defensive team they’ll play this year however.
    Given a rematch with UCLA and LSU, Dawn will have answers. Look at the adjustment after the 1Q. But the lack of a true board dominating post player is missing which is concerning for gamecock fans.

    I thought your assessment was right on the money. The huge discrepancy in bench points, which you pointed out, cannot be ignored. Especially in a physical battle like this game was, starters get worn down. To LSU's credit, they hung in there, and kept it close. As a Bruin fan, I didn't see any player from either of these teams that can cause serious problems for Lauren Betts. There may be only two other centers in the country that can go one on one with Betts, so I still like UCLA's chances. Beers from Oklahoma can give her some grief, but Oklahoma's team has not been as good as I thought they would be this year.

    • @VincentBaker-j1b
      @VincentBaker-j1b 9 днів тому

      @@RustyLou18 Londyn Jones hit all those threes because she was left wide open when South Carolina had to double team Betts every time the ball was passed to her. Betts 6'7" height allows her to see which of her teammates gets left alone and Betts unselfishly takes advantage of opponents double teaming her by passing to whichever of her teammates is left uncovered. Every time Betts is double teamed, somebody on UCLA is left wide open. So, opponents are damned if they do(double team Betts) and damned if they don't(Betts will destroy anyone who tries to stop her one on one). As a Bruin fan, I've seen this situation play out all year. Believe me when I tell you this.

    When Ashlin Watkins went down, I thought SC would struggle against the better teams. Feagin has really stepped up and more than made up for Watkins' absence. That's going to make the UConn game interesting as SC has the bigs but UConn has the guards. Wings are about even. If Feagin plays 36 minutes against UConn, expect Strong to also play that many minutes, even though that isn't likely to be the defensive matchup (maybe some of the time, but not all, Strong will prrobably get Morrow.) SEC and Big10 tournaments are going to be fun to watch (although Michigan, who I've been liking this year got pummeled by Michigan State this afternoon.) I still think Strong is leading candidate for Freshman of the Year, but Edwards is making her mark as well. And there are a few others around the country that should be in the convo (Swords @ Michigan, and Heckel @ USC among them.)

  • @jaduvoisin
    @jaduvoisin 9 днів тому

    I watched this game and saw the same things you did. I think you're right about the draft stock issues for Morrow and Paopao, as well as for Feagin. The first two were exposed in ways that are likely to prove damaging for them, and Feagin showed she's a solid albeit limited post player, roughly in the mold of Kiah Stokes. There's room for that kind of player in the W. This was also Rebecca Lobo's insight during the game.
    As for whether LSU proved that they are a contender in this loss, I understand your (and Kim's) reasoning, but I put more weight on your suggestion about Day-Wilson. She was really exposed on offense and defense and I can't see them making it past the Elite Eight this season with her at PG, and Kim has once again left herself in a bind at that position. The remainder of the SEC schedule will probably make this clear even before the NCAA tournament.
    And LSU's front court also looked particularly vulnerable. Smith and Morrow are simply not enough to play with any of the teams bigger than SC. Morrow is a great player, but unless she has an inspired game, she cannot carry them by herself, and Smith is not strong enough to make a difference. Sadly, it's also clear that Del Rosario is really not ready for primetime this season, and may never be. In March, the question will be glaring: are they good enough with a weak front court and Day-Wilson at PG to get past Texas or USC or ND or UConn or even OU in March? I think not. Heck, they barely squeezed by Tennessee and Vandy.
    And this result may be even worse when it comes to Day-Wilson's draft stock. If she had any shot before this, I think that's over now. I'd also say that Kitts's draft stock is in free fall at this point for the very reason you mentioned, that she doesn't tend to win 50-50 balls. She's long and a clever scorer, but she is not strong enough to rebound with the bigs and may not have the stamina top defend them either. I have a feeling she may fall out of the starting lineup by the end of March in favor of Edwards.
    I also think you're right to draw attention to the role of Hall and Tessa Johnson in the win. I've thought Tessa was the main rising star on SC as soon as she was recruited. She was one of Dawn's best finds. She's smart and has what we used to call 'court savvy' and she's long enough to make in the W. Same with Hall. By contrast, PaoPao is smallish and doesn't defend well, and she doesn't have the quickness to reliably create her own shot. The contrast with Flau'jae on this point is striking.

    You can't take a whole lot from any one game. SC has an amazing body of work against an array of highly regarded teams. They have lost a handful of games in the last 5 seasons; that's it. There is a reason for that. Yeah, they lost to UCLA at their place but that doesn't mean that they can't beat UCLA. Morrow and Pao Pao have had amazing careers and this one game does not define them. SC is proven and nobody has played the level of competition that they have. That win over SC by UCLA, did not their season make. I'll go with the best program over the last 5 years and that is South Carolina.
