  • In this video with the Patterson Academy, I explain why I am paying attention to it now -- for my daughter AND for me! I show you the differences and similarities of two separate curriculum, what I like about each one, and how we use them BOTH. Homeschool grammar can be really fun!

We also really like First Language Lessons! We're starting FLL 3 in the fall :).

I think it's a grammar book you can keep forever. I know it will always be on our shelf. We have the purple book in the next TWTM colour-coded series for next year and probably don't need to get another for a while. We will take our time and learn a bit but focus on maintaining the knowledge gained from Lvl 4. IMO, if all adults had lvl 4, most wouldn't need much more than that for the rest of their lives.

I am planning to use first language lessons for 1-6 and incorporate fix it grammar starting in 3rd or 4th as well. I plan to continue fix it through middle and high school and use grammar for wtm. It’s nice to see another mama who is trying that same idea! How is it going for you now that you’ve been using both for a few months now? The author says grammar for wtm gets much more intensive towards the second half of the book; have you noticed that? Will you stretch this book out into 5th grade?

The First Language Lessons Level 4 (we never did 1-3 since we started homeschooling this year) don't become intense at all. HOWEVER... if you haven't diagrammed a sentence, don't look at the end chapters! lol. You will think, "No way." The book is so well done and your scripted dialog from the teacher manual is so complete that you will have no trouble methodically working through each chapter, little by little. Pretty soon, you will be doing all the complicated stuff and think nothing of it. The books after First Lessons, where they move into the color coded books, I can see by flipping through our purple one, will start to get tricky. Per the website, it is okay if you need to stop one book and get another color book. In our case, I would rather work slower and be more methodical. In my humble opinion, if you have done the level 4 First Language Lessons, you have done more than nearly anyone in highschool. So from here on out, we will be in maintenance mode. Pairing Fix It! with First Language Lessons was unintentional. I just wanted to see which one we would stick with and we simply never stopped either. But having Morgan work on her own with Fix It! pushes her ahead with seemingly little effort when we open the Language Lessons book. We will stretch level 4 out into the 5th grade since we have slowed way down to do other things (namely our North Dakota studies unit and field trips). When it comes to grammar, I feel like it's like long distance running. We aren't rushing towards a finish line so we will take our time and continue working through before the purple book.
