Thank you for all this information. You mentioned that the colors of the books just have different examples, does it matter if we start with yellow instead of purple? is this considered a grade? or is there an order on how to start?
There's no difference in level by color of the book. There's no order you need to follow.
Do you feel like a 12 year old who hasn't had any grammar instruction could start here? I'm unsure if I want to go ahead with this or do first language lessons 3 & 4 then move to this.
Yes, I would start here with a 12 year old. It starts off very basic and goes up. I think it world work well for you.
