Their first albums are my favorites. I had them on vinyl in 1980-82. Love all of their music but this was just way beyond it's time. I can't think of any other band that sounded like this. I don't have the vinyl anymore but still listen to it frequently. Reel to Real Cacophony & Sons & Fascination. Still would be in my top 10 fav albums of all time.
The only thing that U2 and Simple Minds have in common is that they both went stadium in 1985. And truth be told it worked out better for U2 in the end. U2 were able to build on their success and innovated and moved with the times. Simple Minds lost all their chemistry after Derek Forbes left and were unable to write anything that didn't sound corny. Also. Simple Minds had an Art Rock background whereas U2 were baptised in Punk and The Edge understood the Blues.
A lot of respect for U2 in the fact that they've 'consistently' turned out 'good stuff' over the years whereas my fave band(Simple Minds) are nothing like what they were in the early 80's.But for me personally nothing beats them in that early era.
Personally, I prefer Simple Minds earlier albums over U2's. Although I can't put a knats cock between 'New Gold Dream' and 'WAR'. They're both works of genius.
I love their early sound, it's so unique
What a find!
I've got the original 12" of this and I tell you it still blows me away.....none of these youtube links do it one ounce of justice...
I've got it as a B-side on an Arista 12" of Celebrate, which sounds just as good if not better than the album version
