- 14 Feb 2015 - Leonard Whiting who played "Romeo" in the 1968 classic version of "Romeo and Juliet" appeared at the Castro Theater in San Francisco for a Marc Huestis Presents event on Valentines Day. Organizer/Producer Marc Huestis, hosts a question and answer session with Leonard Whiting.
He's still has it!!!

Goodness the man is pushing 70 and he's still being asked about Romeo and Juliet!! Strange how his accent has changed unless when he was younger he spoke better. As a fellow Brit he now sounds quite provincial , when younger spoke better!!!
Then as a Brit, you ought to know Cockney when you hear it. Furthernore, as a Shakespearean actor he would perform accordingly. Lastly, his performance was remarkable. If Isaac Newton were alive today, I would probably ask about gravity.
@@shannonmiller1129 Sorry but actually he is NOT speaking with a 'cockney' accent . As I said he is speaking with a provincial accent ie Southern England (same as me!!). Cockney is specifically a London (East) accent although it has migrated somewhat to parts of Southern England (much to the chagrine of some here!) . When he was in Romeo & Juliet he spoke with his usual voice which has not really changed just affected by age since it would be different when he was about 18. He performance was remarkable I agree . I really wasn't knocking him in any way!
@@steviealessi5412 :) It was my understanding that Whiting spoke with a strong Cockney accent, prior to Romeo and Juliet, which prompted Zeffirelli to say, "how is he going to speak Shakespeare when he can't speak English?" Both Hussey and Whiting have referenced the Cockney. I have never heard him speak outside that movie or this interview. He did have a beautiful voice, though assumed it was coached for Shakespeare.
Sorry for sounding abrupt. It was a magnificent performance that seems to have taken 400 years to finally get. If the man never did another awesome thing, he already gave the world a gift and himself a legacy. I hope he knows that.

He was trained to get rid of his cockney accent as a teen to be able to play Romeo , Zeffirelli's orders ! 😂
He was absolutely brilliant , and gorgeous , in that role. Unforgettable.
