- Sunday, 04 Mar 2018 is the 50th Anniversary of the premiere of Franco Zeffirelli's "Romeo and Juliet" in London's Odeon theater.
On Sunday 04 Mar 1968 there was a Royal gala for this premiere showing. I put together this music tribute with images from the premiere including news reel footage, images from the official program books.

Goodbye Olivia you will be our Juliet forever.
Good bye Olivia Hussey - the most beautiful Juliet ever! You will remain young forever in our hearts each time we see Zeffirelli’s masterpiece.
In my opinion, the ONLY portrayal of Romeo and Juliet. Sublime!
Still my favorite movie after all these years. We took a school trip in 9 th grade to see this when it came out. The girls were crying at the end and the boys were laughing at the girls. I'm 71 now. With Olivia's passing it's like I've lost part of my childhood. RIP Olivia.
Me too, same age as you. Juliet was perfect, those lovely costumes, music and young love. Her eyes were captivating. I dried when I read she is gone. Always on my DVD and I still keep it clean with my DVD machine.
dried is cried
there will never ever be a better romeo and juliet than zefferelli's with these two leads...ever...or a better film score for it...
I'm gonna disagree with you here buddy. The acting doesn't hold up over time. Watch Romeo and Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio from 1996. Il The story is well told in both but the acting is so much better
@@jackbeanstalk9208
Modern version was an insult to Shakespeare and Theater ! So, I am disagreeing with you. ! The acting holds up beautifully.
Danes and De Caprio submerged and blowing bubbles in the water has nothing to do with the story just like 95 percent of the film !
Zefferelli slayed it !
I agree with you @michaeldonovan4793 & I've seen all versions
❤❤❤
I agree, great film and great score by Nino Rota
Zefirelli's movie Will be forever in our minds and heart. Regards from Brazil.
Even the song was iconic...still moving.
Without doubt , one of the most beautiful films ever made , with music by Nino Rota so haunting and heartbreaking. Zeffirelli and his two young stars left us a Romeo And Juliet to treasure for all time . What a sad thing it is that a ridiculous lawsuit should after more than 50 years taint this masterpiece, and our memory of its two young and beautiful lovers .
Rest in peace Olivia , you and Leonard should be proud to be part of such a work of art . Zeffirelli immortalised you both .
They were paid just just 30k each and the film made 38m in ticket sales and had to do interviews and photos shots during their lunch hour. They could and should have been given more when the profits came in. They earned it
We went to see it as 16 year olds for our English literature class. We emerged blinking into the late afternoon sunlight on George St, 50 16 year olds in school uniform bawling our eyes out. They really caught the young boomers at the crest of romantic youth.
Nobody is more beautiful than this couple! Best Romeo and Juliet movie!
"A rose will bloom. It then will fade. So does the youth. So does the fairest maiden."
Best-looking couple ever.
Best-looking couple ever.
Absolutely!!
That wasn't nice
A great film made even better by Nino Rota's haunting title music and Franco Zeffirelli's wonderful directing.
Probably the 1st and MOST ICONIC COUPLES in cinematic history
Well there was Taylor and Burton in Cleopatra in the early 60s.
@@theexmannPerhaps, but they presented a couple of matured, middle-aged man and woman, experienced in intimate life and cynical. That makes quite a different story.
There has never been a better version of Romeo and Juliet ….. excellent performance by all.
It is a beautiful movie that never outdates. I saw it in 1968 and still watch it today. It is by far my favorite movie of all time!
There is no replacement for youth. Beauty does come from the inside, and you become a fuller (hopefully better) person as you age, but that look and the genuine naivite' are gone. Zeffirelli cast these two perfectly. Your heart just goes to them watching them in the film; beautiful movie, beautiful Romeo and Juliet. To me they'll never make another to match it; it's absolute perfection. P.S. They have remained friends to this day; how wonderful.
Hi, Tommy What’s up? Laura
Yes
Great comment!
She was chosen from 500 other possibilities for the Juliet role.
@@Aotearoa0 👍🌹
This was a beautiful movie!! Love it.
I loved this movie when it came out in 68. It was beautifully done.
This movie came out the year I was born. However I got to watch it on TV in my country when I was a teenager. Olivia has the most angelic beauty in my opinion. Just gorgeous❤❤❤…
The greatest Romeo And Juliet ever done. 🥰😇😎
Zeffirelli’s masterstroke was to cast two young people who were very easy on the eye. A handsome Leonard Whiting and a gorgeous Olivia. They were not the greatest of actors but their screen presence compensated for that lack of experience. T’hat early publicity and attention was hard for them in 1968. Too much, too soon.Olivia never truly fulfilled her fame. How many of you here can name anything of real note she did later that truly endorsed that early stardom? I checked out Whiting too, and there is very ,little of any note. T’he highly successful film Death on the Nile 1978 shows her as part of an ensemble cast but she didn't shine. Pity but not entirely unusual with young stars who peak too soon.
@@vero73302 Yes, Zeffirelli liked to use his actors more than once. In the film The Taming of the Shrew, he used many of the cast again for Romeo and Juliet.
Music in this movie was beautiful….
Still breaks my heart.
every time you watch you always want them to survive even though you know how it ends
An eternal masterpiece..the music..costumes..sets..casting..and the immortal words of the bard William Shakespeare..the acting and Olivia Hussey & Leonard Whiting in the title roles..cinematic genius for sure. Franco Zeffirelli even handpicked all the extras in the film..the only story of this tragic love for me.😊❤🎉
This film & these 2 actors made Shakespeare cool & an escape from turbulent times. So many young people grew up studying Shakespeare & embracing that whole ancient, fantasy world thanks to that 1 film.
MOST BEAUTUFUL FILM THAT i EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. IT WOULD NOT BE AS DRAMATIC AND MEMORABLE WITHOUT UNSURPASSED MUSIC OF NINO ROTA. THE ACTORS ARE SO YOUNG AND PASSIONATE. I WAS 18 WHEN I WATCHED IT FIRST TIME. AM RETIRED NOW. BUT WHEN WATCH THEM FOR THE MILLIONS TIMES FEEL SAME SADNESS AND GLORY AND PRIDE FOR THE HUMAN RACE TO BRING SHAKSPERE PLAY TO LIVE FOREVER.
I think she is the most beautiful woman.
He was cuter than her
Olivia to this day (unless she has had work done?! I wouldn't blame her) is STILL REMARKABLY BEAUTIFUL. When I saw the film at a very small cinema in an even smaller town! - when Olivia first appears on camera, the audience let out an audible sigh! seriously, a sigh and from a group of varying ages! And virtually NO MAKEUP, AND LONG, LONG, UNEVEN HAIR- a breathtaking woman.
What an amazing night. Olivia was stunning as usual.
I wish i coould go back in the time and live the moment of Romeo and juliet premiere,
I saw this movie in June of 69. I was eighteen with long black hair. My bf looked like Romeo. Let’s face it we all identified with them. I loved this movie. I still do. So beautiful. A real work of art.
mrscamelot great to hear that, must have been so amazing.I am a millennial and I watch old movies hehe,I just love romeo and Juliet, the acting, precision, setting.I wish I was born in the 60’s
i was eighteen when it came out and saw it three times a day for three straight days...thirty two total times over the next year! just a wee bit of a romantic addiction i'd say that lasted all my life...greatest romeo and juliet ever, forever...
Saw it in late 1969 (was ten and my father took me)
Fell in love with it, the story and Shakespeare, of course!
@@michaeldonovan4793not at all questioning your film taste, but how in the world did you accomplish that? VHS wasn't around at that time was it? Did you move into a hidden corner of some theater??
That music is soo good... At a point it makes me really feel sad.
"O parting is such sweet sorrow..." Farewell our beloved Juliette, rest sweetly in eternal peace ❤
Zeffirelli, simply a genius....
👍
I could never get enough of Romeo and Juliet. It will always be one of my absolute best films. I adore Olivia and Leonard in this movie.
After all these years this is my favorite movie of all time. I had a wicked crush on Romeo for years. What a beautiful couple actors.
My Romeo and Juliet favorite movie couple.
Best romeo and juliet movie so real tragic beautiful. So moving .
RIP Franco Zeffirelli'
and thank you
Extraordinary movie A classic, one of the best in the history of cinema.
Nino Rota's music should have won an Oscar.
Yes, and so should the film and the director; the film was robbed! Only costume and cinematography won. Michael York and John McEnery overlooked, as was Pat Heywood. I went to the Odeon two days after the premiere and was totally enthralled. Saw it twice with other sets of friends. Never tire of it. Despite two major and important omissions from the text ( which always are included in other versions) Zeffirelli's version will always be the best. The whole group was exemplary and nobody miscast. If you get a chance, watch The Taming of the Shrew also made by Zeffirelli, and you will see many of the same actors and extras. Starred Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, and Michael York.
Pavarotti has a version of it too. It's quite haunting and beautiful. Al Giochi Addio.
CVArts I agree. It’s often played on Classic FM. I was taken to watch this by my school. I’m forever grateful for a real education and I’m grateful for teachers who wanted to teach. Teachers who I love and remember with love, respect and gratitude.

watching the clip 50 years after the premiere, the music particularly hits home. What is a youth?
I was 17 when i saw the movie and i thought they were the most beautiful couple ever
when i was a child in the 70's my mother had thee record and the sheets within contained the entire screenplay for Romeo and Juliet. I used to be able to follow word for word.. Shakespeare .. and understand it completely. Not anymore.. i have to try hard when it used to be natural. The accumulation that comes with age is real, no doubt about that.
I fell totally in love when I was a freshman in high school when all of us went on a field trip to see this movie. I am still in love with this movie, always have and always will. No other movie has meant this much to me.
I saw this movie with my mom and sister. 1968 We looked just like Olivia, (Juliet) the hair and eyes! Some boy friends looked like (Romeo) Leonard! It was fabulous! We have all the VHS tapes and pictures and everything! Us and the whole theater cried at the end.
Cannot believe so many years had gone by, like many viewers here I was a teenager watching and liking this movie. I still own a vhs tape and still watch the movie once in a while
The most Wonderfull love movie.
a moment in time, where even time stopped to pay respects to this most exquisite film of absolute eternal beauty.. so special too, the Score 🎶🎼🎵… just a brilliant beautiful endeavor …
Timeless Movie. it is a relic of humanity and love
Most of these people are gone now. Feels strange watching this.
Such love and wonderful comments here for Romeo & Juliet, aided by the stunning music as we read. This post: A Time For Us!
I saw this Brilliant Movie , just after its release . I was struck , not only by the story line , but also the Music . Next day I purchased the Piano Music .
One of my Favorite Movies of all Time!!🌹🎶
Olivia Hussey was truly one of the most beautiful women of all time! And while she has certainly been successful in her career as an actress, her personal life of 3 marriages along with a long fight with cancer has aged her and ravaged her beautiful body more than her fair share. I wish only love and light for Olivia!
Muy guapisimos y jovencisimos los dos!! 😊😊
The 60's might have been so marvelous
_There will never be a Juliet Capulet interpreter like the beautiful Olivia Hussey in Shakespeare's immortal play. As the English bard well described in the fifth act of his same 'masterpiece':_
_Death, that hath suck'd the honey of thy breath, / Hath had no power yet upon thy beauty: / Thou art not conquer'd; beauty's ensign yet / Is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks, / And death's pale flag is not advanced there._
Why are thou so fair?

One EPIC. film.....forever
I'm 44 and never saw this movie or these young actors that were in it. I saw the interview and was fascinated by the way they carried themselves.
My 9th grade English class went to see this movie on a Friday night in 1969. Made me a huge Shakespeare fan. I still have the original movie program as shown in your video. I can recite the dialogue word for word with the movie, however, I don't do this because it would be annoying!Thank you so much for posting this. I enjoyed it immensely. So cool to see Danny Kaye, Richard Chamberlain, Roger Moore, Patrick McNee, Joan Collins, etc, etc. Wish I could have been there! Adieu!
Where did yo go to school? You had a cool english teacher!

What a wonderful and interesting video you put together, Ciro. Thank you! This was a perfect film. Both of them were perfect for their parts, and so unbelievably attractive, especially Olivia. So, so beautiful. And the fantastic music just made it that much better. One of the best movies in the history of cinema.
Shakespeare would have been very pleased with this production of his beautiful play. IMO it was a perfect film (except, maybe just more scenes!). It would be so great to see the scenes that were cut out during the edits.
Thanks for posting this!! :)
I think he would have been pleased, too, but maybe a little displeased that parts of the play was missing.

I am really impressed by all the pictures that you posted and that you have the original program. Such a beautiful movie and such a beautiful couple.
This was lovely thank you so much.
Wonderful. Olivia seemed mature for her age in interviews. They are the best Romeo and Juliet...Beautiful...
Loved how in the interview Leonard drinks from her glass, after the interviewer asks her about her smoking. She was a beautiful rebel. The puffing on the cigarette was a classic, but like all of us who sucked back on cigs, we're reformed smokers.
