  • Last task before I take the car to Texas DOT safety inspection. "interesting" design, but ultimately a serviceable part. In this video I demonstrate how to refresh the lubrication on the gears, and inspect the electric motor for the wipers on a 1977 MGB.

    Lesson for new players here - if you disassemble the motor, make sure you keep the blades off when you first test it - if you got the link arm switch 180d out, then it will park on the wrong side and drive the wiper blades into the body work and mess your paint - ask me how i know ;).

    In most cases the main problem is one or more of the wiper wheel assembles that is not moving freely and general lack of fresh grease . I am just completing the restoration of my 1980 MGB. Before installing the wiper assembly I cleaned and lubed each component. This includes all three short tubes that the wiper cable moves inside of, the wiper cable, the wiper motor assembly and gears and each of wiper wheel assemblies. I ended up replacing all of the 3 units with new units. In the event that the wiper are already installed. I recommend removing all the wiper arms, unbolting the wiper motor, dethatching the wiper motor from the wiper tube assembly and pulling out the motor with the entire wiper cable. Once removed restoration of the assemble is much easier. This is when you can check each of the wiper wheel assemblies for free movement. Replacement of these is very difficult but possible.

      That sounds like quite a process. I count myself lucky with the outcome of the minimal refresh I did.

      How do you thread the full assembly back when you finish? Looks like it will be a nightmare to fish them back, am I right?

      With the wiper arms removed, the cable goes in effortlessly. They spin as you feed the spiral cable into position. The screw in the locking nut once the spiral cable is fully seated back into its original position. @@MarianoLu

      I Know... I saw that.
      Sorry man, I was not going to redo the shot, as I am actually just working on my car, not a sponsored shop. Still, I do spend a bit of time on post production. in this video, you may see I had to re record some of the dialog. I kept referring to the Drivers compartment as the engine compartment.
      Getting Old I guess.
      but, thanks for the feedback. it was helpful and constructive. I am getting better with everyone's help.

    Consider yourself lucky that your car is LHD. On a RHD car is access much more restricted due to the steering wheel and all dashboard gauges.

    Any reason why not to just spray clean and lube the mechanism while the motor is off, like at 3:43?
    I don't want to remove the whole thing - thanks

      The gear was not turning.i am not sure it would have freed up without disassembly.
      Also, once you remove the motor,the brushes become difficult to reset without complete access.

    You mentioned GA grease a couple times. What is GA grease?

      @AlexPlatacis  4 місяці тому +1

      Sorry, might be a military term. "General Application". Unlike hi-temp or bearing grease. Or other specific lubricants
