Hi Tony, I recently bought a D610 and this video is highly informative like many of your videos (so thank you for that!) I really would like to know your thoughts on Tamron 35-150 that came out in 2019 with D610. I wrote to you on Twitter as well. I couldn't find any information about your suggested 24-105 Sigma or the Tamron Lens, so I can't make an informed decision; I highly value your opinion, would greatly appreciate your thoughts! Many thanks :)

personally I much prefer my Nikon 24-120 f4, a superior lens and a little more reach at the telephoto and well worth the extra money

I’m about half-way into this tutorial. I’ve been avoiding it for months, just letting camera mold in the corner of the bedroom. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I can do this, and if I don’t get it I just watch a particular segment again. I know that’s the logic of a seven year-old, but that’s the confidence level at which I began. Thanks for your professional and thorough treatment of my phobia of moving parts.

Thank you Tony. I have your book and i'm loving it! This visual reinforcement is the icing on the cake! Living and working in Japan, the photo ops are endless but the photo learning resources in my language are few. Thank you for the work and efforts you offer the amateur photographers.

I live in France and just bought a Nikon D610. I could not find such a precise tuto in French to present the main functions and buttons... Hopefully, I speak English and could follow this excellent tuto and I now know the main functions of this camera. Hundreds of thanks for being so clear and precise. Michel

I just made the jump from film to digital and I bought the D600 used which I couldn’t pass up because it’s in like new condition with just a little over 3,000 shots taken. I want to thank you Tony for this tutorial that has allowed me to learn my new camera quicker than I ever would reading the users manual.

@Heidi Ivy I've had this camera for many years. It's great for photos being full-frame sensor and all (awesome dof etc). But very bad for videos as it cannot focus / follow focus properly. The technology wasn't there really. I'd get a newer dual pixel canon or sony alpha if you do any videos

i have to say - i LOVED watching your tutorial.. i'm a visual / image based person who simply cannot learn from manuals and complex discussions and i get overwhelmed by too much complex detail.
Your style of explanation, simplifying everything down and simple step-by-step process went straight in and stuck in my head and i FULLY get it.. (i have tried understanding these basic things for years and couldn't - and in just one 45 minute video it's in - YAY!!! :)
    thank you!
I recently bought a D610 and not yet learnt how to work it - (until your video just now!) yet i have my first shoot lined up this week - simple interior shots of a property (came out of the blue from a friend and i couldn't say no!). But of course, dealing with windows, lights, bright and dark corners etc.. so much more complex then people realise!
Im very interested to learn much MUCH more about this camera, photography in general as its a DREAM to make it in the digital photography world. i DREAM of having my own exhibition one day.
Back in the day i aced at film, and digital always scared me. So iPhone and basic point n shoot cameras took over and i drifted away from the dream.
But then i got a D610 on sale and my heart sparked again! ooooh the possibilities!
If you have any links, suggestions to the best material to get me from beginner with a great eye to 'technically sound' with equipment and understanding working with light would be AWESOME! Let me know if i should email directly - you can get me on the hotmail address with lhibburd (at)
    MANY thanks
    Lucy

Thank you very much for sharing these information. I bought my camera almost 1 year and half now but I have been using a very basic use which is not supposed to be the function of this kind of camera. I've been watching recently many videos on UA-cam but so far I didn't come across a better , simpler and more detailed video than yours.
Though the video was quite long and the amount of information given is huge, I still enjoyed watching and I didn't want the video to finish. Thank you for taking me to a higher level of using a professional camera like Nikon D610.

This is nothing shy from awesome! Finally was able to make the leap to pick up better body and chose the D750. Found this vid after playing with the camera for a while and realizing that there was a steeper learning curve that I'd had thought there would be. Well not anymore, you answered all the questions I had come up. Not only is all the information here, I chose this video to watch because I liked others of yours you have done; presentation and your manner of explanation is top notch! Very easy to follow and understand! Thank you for doing these. I wanted to purchase your everything bundle before but this video sealed the deal and eliminated any contemplation on making a purchase. I'm doing it as soon as I hit post! Thanks again!

I very much appreciated being able to enjoy this video. As an armature photographer with aspirations of becoming more proficient, I can't stress how helpful this video was to me. I've learned so much more than I ever did by reading the standard user's manual supplied by Nikon. I watched very attentively, pausing and taking down notes on flash cards as I took my time viewing. I did go to Amazon and purchase your book because I'm certain it'll help cement all of the points covered and more in further detail.

Tony, GREAT easy-to-understand explanations, as usual (I read the camera manual within a few days of getting home with my D610). I bought the D610 because it enables me to use my 6 film era lenses without the cropping factor. I have an old Nikon push-pull 35-70mm lens, and have really enjoyed using for kids running around. I COULD have bought the D750 but... I didn't/don't need the bells and whistles. Also, I never machine gun my shutter button since it's not what I do in my style of shooting; besides, I'm really old-school and believe in "the Decisive Moment." And, yes, I'm seriously contemplating getting the book even after all these years.

Great overview! I don't know if you are aware but their is a quicker way to format the SD card rather than going into the menu!
You can do this by pressing and holding the trash can and metering button for two seconds, select which card slot you want formatting with the back dial then quick press the trash can and metering button again! I have pointed this out to a number of my photography friends and they have said they have wondered what the "Format" icons were for.

The thing I loved about this camera was how insanely good it is in low light high iso, it even performs better than it's big brother the D810, if you take time to set up and reassign buttons like me you'll quickly find you can change most things that need to be changed during a day of shooting with practice you develop muscle memory for where each thing is so I can now change everything I need to without taking my eye from the viewfinder. Like everything in life, it just takes practice, I used to just sit with my camera and think of a setting to change and just practice doing this without taking photos, just to build up my muscle memory, it happens really quickly if you set up the buttons to reflect how you shoot, so once you've set up the camera and start taking photos of anything at all you'll quickly find out which buttons need to be reassigned. The main one I always reassign in the AEL button on the top right, rear of the body, which I reassign as my back button focus, I never could get used to half pressing then fully pressing the shutter, especially when i was taking rapidly changing single shots so having the back button focus is perfect.
I shoot almost entirely for B&W so I set up everything for that in the U1 including playback being in B&W, and in U2 I set that up for when i'm doing normal photos and in colour

Thanks good information. I find that auto white balance doesn't give best results, even shooting RAW, but probably safest to keep in this mode for quick pops. The in camera settings are much better, or you can save a couple of perfect gray card presets.

Really grate video, have an old Nikon F-801 (with some glass) and want digitat replacement. The D610 sounds like a good alternetive. Only question is if the glass will fit...

Hello Tony, one thing - formatting card on Nikon is super easy with button combo and you have no need to go to menus at all. Just hold trash can and metering button for a sec.

Hi, Tony. First off, thanks for all the terrific info and insight, that your wife and yourself provide. My question re exposure compensation is; would you not accomplish the same outcome with adjusting the ISO vs adjusting the exposure compensation. Please explain. Thanks , again.

A small note regarding memory cards: Not only is there a difference in write speeds that will affect the number of images, you can make in a single burst before the buffer fills up; the read speed is also affected by the speed rating of a card.
When using a built-in card reader on most computers (which is faster than a USB-based card reader), the speed difference when downloading 16 GB of images while the customer is breathing down your neck is VERY apparent, and that - for me - is more than enough to warrant the purchase of a fast card, even though I mostly do portraits and commercial work.
For a wedding photographer who needs to flush cards to a computer several times during the day, the speed improvement will probably be worth the price difference too.

2022…. Looking at a used Nikon D610 to move up from my DX system (D300s). Though honestly, wondering since I buy cameras so infrequently and I like to shoot Cine or video often, maybe I would be smarter to go with a Z6 or Z6II? I use mostly vintage lenses (Nikon MF, Zenit, Helios etc. ) or manual focus modern lenses (Lensbaby/Lomography). Mirrorless quick back focus zoom in check focus with focus peaking in viewfinder and shoot, plus if I like a shot I could switch to full frame 4K and shoot some video internally or externally with my already owned Atomos Ninja V…. I would probably be smarter just to suck it up and get a Z6 or a Z6II and skip over a used $500+ D610? Sounds reasonable.. but D610 looks fantastic for the money in the used field.
