Great tutorial. Thank you! I just bought a used D810 with 30k actuations with a 50mm 1.4d lens for $800 and it's a great camera, even without the latest bells and whistles.
I stayed and watched the whole thing. That's about as big a compliment as you can get! Photography tutorial videos can be very boring. Not this! ...and without any fancy transitions or sound effects! Thank you very much! I don't even own the D810 and I watched the whole thing. I really plan on getting one though unless Nikon rolls out an update before I do. Awesome video! Big up from Jamaica!
If you bought a D810 and here for start up info- Just watch it. You will be 100% satisfied- take my word for it!! one of the best and the most clear tutorials ever- i just upgraded from D5100 to D810 and was completely at loss at this magical instrument which has been my dream from last few years- and finally got it. the best part is , i got complete control over my camera- which is so much more advanced than 5100- in like 1 hour- and thats simply amazing. I kep shooting practice shots with the video on- and i have to say- i shoot with complete control. So if you have just bought a D810 and come here- just watch this video. Totally worth it. Thanks a lot guys- you did an awesome job.
+Jayaraman Pillai, Tony has so many skills, a highly skilled pro photographer, business talented, and above all, a great teacher who makes every one easy understands whats he's talking about. thank you Tony for the great work you always do. all the best.
Thanks, Tony. I just made the HUGE jump from my D3100 to the D810 and I found this video to be of SO much use to me! I'm not one to read a guide book and prefer the face-to-face hands-on tutorials. I'm looking forward to breaking it in!! THANKS!!!
I wanted the D810 for years. I finally got one a few weeks ago and was absolutely clueless about how to use it to it's fullest potential. So I'm incredibly grateful for this video!
Oh, and I feel like the D810 I'm holding in my hand right now is an entirely different beast than it was before. I had already been through the manual top to bottom but there's nothing like seeing somebody demonstrate the tech in practice. Thank you so much for your assistance!
I just got my D810, second hand, no user manual, then I thought if Tony could help out Ted then he could help me out as well. Thanks Ted and Tony! Great job!
Tony, thank you, thank you, thank you for this Nikon D810 Tutorial! having bought one a couple months ago, obviously, there were a ton of questions I had even after reading the manual everyday all day. You help me so much!
I asked and you delivered. THANK YOU very much for this. I haven't even started watching it yet, but I know it will be awesome. I am taking out my camera right now just to compare set ups.
OK, I just bought the camera and the Northrup books. I watched the video from end to end. I watched the video with the camera in hand again. I think I am now ready to take photo #1. This camera is intimidating. I've have been wanting this camera for 3 years and now I finally have it. Thanks Tony and Chelsea for the visual owner's manual!
I just purchased the Nikon D810 , this has to be the best Tutorial I have ever seen, I brought the Book :) an absolutely must watch for all photographers. A big Thank you to Tony & Chelsea.
I have just upgraded from a Nikon D7100 to the D810. I dropped into this site just to learn how to select Back Button Focus, but I'm coming away with lots, lots more. Thank you Tony and Crew.
OUTSTANDING tutorial. I've been looking to upgrade for a long time. I've always been a Canon guy, but due to a pending year long project, my old crop sensor Canon D60 just isn't going to handle my needs and I can't wait for the Canon 5D Mark IV any longer so might have to take the plunge and jump ship to Nikon... and truth be told, Nikon cameras have always been somewhat intimidating as I knew so little about them Your tutorial changed that and I feel like I have a basic understanding of the controls. Obviously a tremendous amount more to learn with this camera, but your video was a great start.
As you know, "electronic front curtain shutter" is a very cool trick, that yields substantial benefits in areas where tack sharp focus is important. Macro and Astrophotography immediately come to mind. For those that don't know, few if they watched your video and bought the camera, the mirror is there so you can look through the viewfinder, and see out the lens at the actual scene, and the aperture is fully open so you can see out the lens. When you push the shutter button, the mirror flips up, the aperture stops down, and the lens is now focusing on the sensor (and not being diverted to the magic focus phased detection array, the magic exposure array, and to the viewfinder screen. Quite a trick. Rube Goldberg like, but it works.). In Live View, like you said the mirror is always up, and you are looking at the image through the lens, as the sensor sees it, stopped up so that it's visible. You now essentially have a "mirrorless camera", but with the weak points like slow focus still present. It's essentially much simpler. The auto focus is terribly slow, and won't work at all if the light is low. But it's very accurate. You're focusing on the actual sensor that is going to capture the image. When you take a picture, the Live View goes blank, and in "Mirror Up" Mode, it also goes blank, even though the mirror is already up. It is stopping down the aperture, and I've just figured out that it's doing one additional thing. Hitting the sensor with a reset to clear out it's "pixel accumulators" (I have NO clue as to the proper vocabulary here, sorry.). From there, a "normal" camera just takes a picture. Which means the shutter opens, and closes after the shutter setting interval. With the FC, the shutter has already been opened, and the release of the reset on the sensor acts as an "electronic vibration free shutter opening." Cool trick. I think "Front Curtain Shutter" (FCS) should have been mentioned because it's so combined with "Mirror up Mode". When you have the FCS turned on (When wouldn't you Tony? Can it do harm, even if not needed?), you'll normally have the camera on a tripod, and when you're in Mirror Up Mode, the first push of the shutter button raises the mirror, the second takes the picture (Or just enter Live View, and it's already up, but you have to hit the shutter button twice anyway to use the FC. WHY? The front curtain, does everything that would ordinarily occur after the mirror is raised, AND opens the shutter, AND releases the reset on the sensor. When you hit the shutter button the second time (remotely or via timer if you''re this worried about vibration), the sensor that is cleared is now turned on to accumulate light (as if the shutter opened), but it's electronic, there is no shudder motion. When the shutter closes after the exposure interval, vibration caused by the closure isn't caught by the sensor. Even zooming in on a regular photo will reveal a slight increase in clarity with the Front Curtain. I'm sure to astrophotographers it's huge. When Mirror Up Mode is selected, two button presses are necessary to take the picture. One being to lift the mirror, the next to take the picture. Two are also necessary in Live View, but the first push doesn't raise the Mirror, it already is raised, so it does the other house keeping chores that even have to be done in view finder mode. I thought you should have mentioned it, but seeing how long it took me to explain it, never mind. I'll read your book!
Just purchased and am waiting on my D810. Really enjoyed the video. I am in the middle of switching from Canon 5D3 to Nikon, so I came here to learn more about the functions and workings of the D810. Thanks for a nice in depth video.
8 years old tutorial and it is great🤩. I got me an 810 a couple of days ago and now I will shoot the night sky. Thank you for an informative and well presented video!
This is REALLY good content on the Nikon D810. I also own and recommend this camera. It is a much better camera than I will ever be when it comes to photography. Tony, your gentle style is much appreciated. There are some real ass-hats doing reviews / explanation(s) of gear on YT, but you, sir, are head and shoulders above all the other wanna-be's. Your professional and clear presentation style is wonderful!
Thanks so much for making this incredibly useful video. I learned more by viewing this video for 30 minutes than I did by using my 810 for 3 months. I will use this video over and over till this stuff sinks in. I plan on getting your books also. Thank you.
Thanks Tony - As a Canon oriented guy my new purchase of D850 was a real challenge - with your tutorial it is much more easy to comprehend a Nikon system. Thanks A lot !!
Thank you so much.... The best ever video ever encountered...... which not only helped me understand the camera but also taught me a lot about digital photography......
This video was Great, going through all the settings, having the Nikon has so many bottoms from what my Canon has ... the more I handle my D810 the better I feel with it .. Tony your a Great instructor. Your Tutorials are were I go to for the best info...
Just received my D810 today. I have a D700 that I will keep as my backup and find someone that would like to buy my old backup, a D200. Your video was excellent, so glad I came upon it doing a UA-cam D810 search.
Superb video, I bought 810 2 days back and this video helped me to start with my camera. It more than 1 hour long , but very engaging . very informative.
Tony gives a perfectly paced, clear explanation of the camera. No run-on "mansplaining" or BS effects in the video. Clean and concise information. Well worth watching to the end!
I just now got around to watching your tutorial. It was very helpful. I'm coming from a large format film background (4X5, 8X10) after a long time out of photography. The D810 seems to fill all my needs. I just have to get a handle on the technology. Thank you again. Your video hit most of the highlights of the camera and gave a jump start in it's operations.
The EU taxation laws have changed such that the 30 min max limit on video has been lifted. This is reflected in the revised D810 menu (via a firmware update). Great, great tutorial Tony, thank you very much indeed.
I gotta say, these videos are so bloody useful. You are just a wealth of knowledge. Keep at it my friend you are doing a great job. Got your book too! :) Just wanted to say thanks for this guide.
I've had my D810 for well over 2 years, but just watched this video again - just to remind me of some of the functions that I'd long forgotten! Thanks Tony.
Thank you I have D810 used camera and although I have managed my way around okay you have shown me things I missed. Much appreciate your reviews and tutorials.
I bought a D810 setup today cause of you! Big step up from the Nikon1 V2 that I had... Also got a SB-910 speedlight + Nikkor AF-S VR Micro 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens + 128GB SD Card.
Very useful. I just got one of these for free (inherited) but know very little about photography, since it’s not an entry level model it’s a little overwhelming. Much appreciated video!
Thank you Tony, I just bought a next to new D810 for 600CDN as well as a 24-70mm 2.8ED for 600. Now that I have watched your video and setup the camera. I feel confident that I have a good base to go out with. I will be definitely buying your books to keep as a reference.
The thing about Tony's videos which makes them so useful, and such a "go to" resource, is the way he's able to seamlessly integrate his real-world experience and wealth of knowledge into his explanations of various features and technical elements of gear. As an advanced photographer, I almost never watch one of Tony's videos without taking away at least one or two really useful bits of knowledge. (Actually... Tony is part of the reason I AM an advanced photographer.) The stuff he gives away in these videos is better than many of the paid courses I've purchased, and I would highly recommend his other materials as well. He's a great resource for the entire photography community, and shares his knowledge without a hint of spin, arrogance or bias.
Very good turorial (I saw it after 1 year that i own the d810!). The one that save my life is the assign of the record button ! So many times i went through the menu and i never saw it ! Thanks tony !!!
Thank you for putting in so much time and care in the tutorial. Just got the 810 and a 24-70 lens for Christmas yesterday, now thinking I could have got a cheaper lens. But your tutorial, wow great! kept me up till 1:30 am it was o good and I am going to get so much more our of this upgrade form the the d90 because of it! Going to B&N today to exchange some books and going to look for your there. If they are not stocked them I am coming back to your link tonight! Thank you, best review, and I watched too many :)
Thanks for the comprehensive overview Tony ..I'm a little embarrassed to say, as an experienced Nikon shooter, that I had overlooked a couple of basic settings .. Yikes !! Now we're all good !
Thanks Tony. Always been a Nikon user, and getting more and more into video. So upgrading to the D810 and this video has really made everything easier.
Brilliant tutorial , nice slow clear presentation , so many American tutorial are like a smurf on helium, this was so refreshing I have subscribed and will buy your books, my first camera was a exacta 35 mm slr , an East German product that I bought in 1952 !! Had 20 different cameras since then.
very nice video. I like it very much. It touches most of the key features of the camera. Other reason I like it the most is because it does not have any background music which I hate the most all the time. Again excellent job you guys did, very professional, respectful, and detailed.
Jumping from D7100 to D810 i was thinking that is losing time to watch this video,i was sure that i know almost everything, guess what...I didn't...This is a MUST WATCH TUTORIAL if you have a D810 !!! Thanks Tony and Chelsea ! BY the way i love the stunning digital photography book.I bought the Digital one but the screen blown my eyes and then i bought the paperback and then i saw that the PDF comes as a gift if you buy the paperback ! Was a good buy anyway !!!
Thanks for the vid! Just purchased the 810 2 days ago & this being my first DSLR it helped a lot. Gets you going right out of the box pointing in the right direction. Also the tips on how & when you use the features makes the vid like a beginners photo class. Once again , Thanks You!
Tony, I can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and experience about the Nikon D810!. This camera was a birthday surprise from my sweet son's and I am binge watching your tutorials and will be purchasing your books. I prefer to watch tutorials/videos so I'm glad you mentioned that the books come with videos. Also, the lens suggestions are gold! Thanks again! Please keep up the coaching.... it is invaluable and truly appreciated!
Hi Tony/Chelsea. Thanks. Having bought a D810 this is the best 1hr-16mins I could have spent finding out the features of the camera. Superb video and beautifully explained. I'm determined to buy one of your books.(hope this doesn't sound too sycophantic)
Superb video. I do read the manuals but this is the best overview and instruction on the D810 I have seen anywhere and keep coming back to this. Thank you Tony. Yes I might get your book!
Very good video! I just got my D810 today, using my D7100 as a backup. Using this video and the settings I have on the D7100 I was able to quickly get the D810 configured the way I work. My favorite part of the video was the auto-iso idea as a handy way to complete the exposure triangle. Thanks again for the video!
This video helped make my transition from a D5100 to my new D810 so much easier. Having to learn a slight new workflow is always never fun. But this was easy to follow and highly informative. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for all the awesome videos. I ended up switching from Canon to Nikon after reviewing a lot of your videos on it and DXOMARK website. Thanks again for all your hard work, I appreciate it as will my wedding clients!
This is an excellent hands-on tutorial. I keep my 810A in hand as you went through each item. Although I have been shooting with the camera for almost a year, I learned some things and the review was excellent. Thank you!
Great tutorial and I love the honest, not beholding to anyone, feedback as to what you find are the best lenses, flashes etc. Feel like I know my camera much better now.
I bought used one today, and wow, what a beast. I have Pentax K3 and D700 and this is huge update. I almost sold Tamron 24-70 because it is soft on D700, but on D810 it's nicely sharp.
I would like to thank u sooo much, ur reviews are sooo detailed, u r talented guys of conveying the information this clear that anyone can understand well done
Always so helpful! Making it entertaining and not monotone where it makes me put my head down ! When watching your tutorial for a new camera I cannot put it down!! Thank you so much for the fun and helpful links.
Tony. You're the best. I just bought a D810 off one of my students, and you've saved me a couple of hours of fiddling. Of course it takes a while to develop muscle/cognitive memory for settings but that will come with time . next up is CF/SD media selection. Thanks again!
Tony, I won this camera as well as a 12-24 and 24-70 2.8g. I'm upgrading from iphone "photography" and this video, with it's bookmarks, as well as many of your other videos have helped me understand this technology tremendously. Thank you for this and your book!
I'm a little late to the D810 game, about 9 years in fact, but I found one locally with about 10k actuations at a decent price. From everything I've seen, outside of 4K video, it's still an awesome platform to start with.
Tony, AWESOME TUTORIAL. I have this camera and have racked my brain trying to understand a lot of customizing it. You explained it great. Keep making those books (I own SDP already) and those videos. Best to Chelsea.
Great video, Tony. Got SDP last month and it's nice to read an actual book again. Btw... trivial tip: Clicking up in menus gets to the buried items fast. E.g. Once you're in Shooting Menu, Movie Settings is just one click up.

Nikon 50mm f/1.8 G on Amazon help.tc/n50g
Tamron 200mm f/2.8 on Amazon help.tc/t200
Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 on Amazon help.tc/r24n
How does that Sigma compare to the Nikon 24-120?
the sigma 24-105 is incredible
I would also recommend Tamron's 90mm 2.8 Macro (G2) - super sharp and built really well.
in 2022, this is still the best D810 tutorial. You guys should offer master classes in digital photography.
2024 and still the best tutorial! - I checked out many. Thanks a million!

Steve Perry has some good Nikon vids.
I've always been a Canon guy, but due to a pending year long project, my old crop sensor Canon D60 just isn't going to handle my needs and I can't wait for the Canon 5D Mark IV any longer so might have to take the plunge and jump ship to Nikon... and truth be told, Nikon cameras have always been somewhat intimidating as I knew so little about them
Your tutorial changed that and I feel like I have a basic understanding of the controls.
I just purchased a D810 and was reading through the manual, this is 100% better. Thanks nice job in this video I am purchasing one of the books today.
This video was a great introduction to the keys points of the camera and a lot easier to understand than the owner's manual.
Just purchased and am waiting on my D810. Really enjoyed the video. I am in the middle of switching from Canon 5D3 to Nikon, so I came here to learn more about the functions and workings of the D810. Thanks for a nice in depth video.

Great training session so thanks for taking the time to share. I'm planning to buy the D810 in the near future and this really helped.

I've been using my Nikon D810 for a year now, and I still learned lots. Have lots more to learn. Thanks
Thanks so much for your great tutorial on the D810. I take much better photos now after learning more about my camera.
Back button focus, I tried it once a couple years back after watching a video about it...I never left!!!! It's just the best way to shoot!!!
Thanks, just got a D800 in 2022 and this lets me understand all settings in half an hour
Just wanted to say thanks for this guide.
I watched your video on the D5300 last year when I got one. Now I upgraded to the D810, so thanks again.
I've had my D810 for well over 2 years, but just watched this video again - just to remind me of some of the functions that I'd long forgotten! Thanks Tony.
Received my new D810 along with the new Nikkor 24-70 2.8 VR today. Thanks for the tutorial! Very well thought out, and extremely helpful.
+Mantisman™ Congrats! Enjoy it!
Tony & Chelsea Northrup: I just sold my D3 and bought the D810 because of your review. Thanks for the knowledge Tony.
It's 2021 and I just ordered this camera for a steal! So, had to come back to T&C and get the real 411. Thanks for making this video!!!
Very useful. I just got one of these for free (inherited) but know very little about photography, since it’s not an entry level model it’s a little overwhelming. Much appreciated video!
Fantastic video. Made moving from D5500 to my new D810 painless. Highly recommended!
Thanks!
Loved my d810 before this video. In 7th heaven now. Will watch it many times. Thanks!
Excellent and clear tutorial on the D810. I will be ordering one of your books for sure.
Mr.Tony, thank you so much for the brief and clarification...God bless you
Love this tutorial, I didn't have a D810 until I saw this video. I like your style. Thanks.
This is exactly what I need. Thanks for this tutorial!!! More power Tony & Chelsea!!!
As long as I keep my D810, this video never gets old
Hello Tony and Chelsea, thanks for the video. Waiting for my D810 to arrive. Thought I would get a head start. Can't wait.
Thanks, Geoff. Aust.
I just picked up a D810 today and found this video incredibly useful as I came from using a D7200. +Tony & Chelsea Northrup
Glad to help!
+Enele Westerlund Glad to help!
+Zhang Yang Thanks, and glad to help!
Great tutorial even for someone who knows their way around Nikon's! Thanks!
Great session! Tony is like having your very own photography coach!!!
Thanks for the vid! Just purchased the 810 2 days ago & this being my first DSLR it helped a lot. Gets you going right out of the box pointing in the right direction. Also the tips on how & when you use the features makes the vid like a beginners photo class. Once again , Thanks You!
Thank you. Excellent video. I'm just waiting delivery of a D810 but this video was also helpful for my D300. And I will be getting your book.
Thank you Tony. Your tutorial is my go-to when I have a question about my D810. You've definitely helped me take better pictures.
I love you!!! In the first 8 minutes you solved my problem; but I jumped ahead so really, the first 5 seconds you solved it. You rock!
Amazing tutorial, I first viewed this video before I bought my D810, and still return every so often. Brilliant
Fantastic Video just upgraded from Nikon D80 to D810. This was exceptionally informative
Great video--much better than reading a boring owner's manual. Quick and easy.
gdh613 Thanks, glad to help!
I just bought a D810 today. This tutorial has saved me hours of messing around. Thank you very much.
+wildfisher2 Glad to help!
This video helped make my transition from a D5100 to my new D810 so much easier. Having to learn a slight new workflow is always never fun. But this was easy to follow and highly informative. Thanks a lot!
This was great! I was a Canon user for quite some time but switched to Nikon. Figured out the working in one go through this video. Thanks a lot.
+itispale Glad to help!
Just acquired a previously enjoyed D800 and about 99% of this applied perfectly! Thank you again Tony!!
Thank you for all the awesome videos. I ended up switching from Canon to Nikon after reviewing a lot of your videos on it and DXOMARK website. Thanks again for all your hard work, I appreciate it as will my wedding clients!
This tutorial is fabulous. Extremely thorough, nicely paced and easy to follow! Thank you!
Thank you! Just received my D810 and your were a big help to get strated.
Tony,
I won this camera as well as a 12-24 and 24-70 2.8g. I'm upgrading from iphone "photography" and this video, with it's bookmarks, as well as many of your other videos have helped me understand this technology tremendously. Thank you for this and your book!
You WON all that?!
+DREAMOFFlCIAL Lucky guy! :D
+JoshB8961 You bet!
Paindoctor Thanks! Glad I could help.
Holding this camera in your hands is like holding a fine instrument. What a work of art.
Incredibly good video tutorial. One of the best I have ever seen. Super useful.
Great video, Tony. Got SDP last month and it's nice to read an actual book again.
Btw... trivial tip: Clicking up in menus gets to the buried items fast. E.g. Once you're in Shooting Menu, Movie Settings is just one click up.
