YES, YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD.....I have a deaf son & dtr in law....as hearing people, most of us have no clue what it is like to live in a deaf world...Just turn the sound down on your TV for 1/2 hour....see what that is like.....
It's like someone I know said it best. If you want to learn any language, you got to think in that language. Silence really gets you in the ASL mindset.

CelticStar8 it is funny you say that, the same thing has been happening to me! Almost every night now in my dreams I am signing. I even remember to ask the person who is signing to me to sign slow :D I am getting my 8 year old to learn with me and she said that she is signing in her dreams too!

Thank you so much for these lessons. My son is 4 and has raging adhd. I decided to learn sign and teach him sign to communicate in new ways. What ever I learn in the lessons I then teach to him. Hes picking it up much faster than I ever imagined and hes actually been managing his feelings better. he was getting really angry one day and signed sad. i was confused and told him thats not the sign for angry thats the sign for sad. he said thats because im sad! i would have never known it! he seemed to just be angry. i gave him lots of love and we avoided a massive blow out because I was able to understand him with out him needing the words. ♡

i really like these. a lot of the asl lessons on youtube are by hearing people and they speak to explain things and i find myself listening too much to the explanation. I like how the instructor finds a way to explain using sign. and he's funny! :) I don't have a real reason for learning how to sign except i want to learn and i think it's a fascinating culture. I guess I figured even if i learn a little it would be good. There's some deaf families who come to the store where i work and i'd love to try what i've been learning but i'm worried about offending them and that's the last thing i want
+lelmdrWHO i dont think they would be offended. i would think they'd understand and if anything it may be amusing to them to see you try to communicate. i guess it depends on the people but i doubt they would be offended
Deaf people are usually very patient and most often are excited that someone is taking the time learn how to communicate with them or at least that is what I have been told while attending classes. This is a late comment as I see you may already know this but hopes it helps in any case.
He is funny! he throws humor into these lessons quite a bit. You have a good understanding of sign to be able to notice that.
I haven't taken ASL classes but I've studied other languages and it never as good if they talk a lot of english. Even if the conversations have to be super simple with lots of mime, I always found you learn and remember better by talking _in_ the language instead of talking _about_ the language.
Wow this is late but you should start by saying you are learning sign language of that you only know a little. When I speak to people learning I usually say hello then say that I am learning or that I only know a little. It helps me then understand if I need them to repeat a lot of slow down. Hope this suggestion helps anyone who sees it!

I am a student nurse and I am currently trying to learn ASL thru your videos for future reference - in case I'll have a deaf/mute patient & I am not actually bored of them compared to others because the way you teach makes it interesting. These videos are EXTREMELY helpful as my boyfriend's mother and her boyfriend are both deaf, and his dad is hard-of-hearing, so he knows and uses ASL. I've been trying to learn to I can talk to them, so thank you for posting these videos!
I am on day two. I told myself I would learn 20 asl words each day. I use the website and these videos! Fun learning!!!
I was put off by the fact the videos don't have sound. It makes sense that there wouldn't be sound and it makes it so much easier to focus and follow along.
This is very very helpful. We have several deaf people at work and I have been working on communication with them... This is still a little fast for me but I have some signs and phrases memorized and learning more and more every day. Thank you for sharing these videos.
jodysin7 You Can Pause It In Between Or Click The Settings Button Then Click Speed And Choose One Of The Lower Numbers And It Will Slow The Video A Bit
Both versions of MOM/DAD are fine. Straight on is more of a "citation" form (formal, stuffy, rigid, -- like a dictionary entry). A bit toward the side (but not too much) is more casual and what you are likely to see in actual everyday signing - partially due to either right or left-hand dominance. You will also see some people start with an "A" hand and change it into a "5" hand. Yet another way is to hold the thumb on the forehead for DAD (or chin for MOM) and "wiggle" the fingers.

this is amazing!!! I am learning. I am so excited. I went on a meet up little ways from me with a group of people wanting to learn. it was fun learning same concept as here with this course. I am going to continue learning with the Professor Bill. this is awesome. finally my dreams are coming true. I get to communicate with people that are Deaf. I had one client that's deaf. I wish I could bring people of hard of hearing to my business. they to need a massage.
My husband's sister is deaf, as is her husband. Your videos are INCREDIBLY helpful to someone with NO previous ASL experience. Thank you so much for publishing these. I especially like that there is no sound attached. It was strange to adjust to at first, but now I think it's the only way to learn ASL. I feel like I can actually communicate a little bit when I meet my new sister-in-law!

I'm Brazilian and I work as an English teacher for hearing students. Unfortunately, in my country we can't find many services or courses for deaf people. I love learning ASL, my thing is i was watching the ones with Jen and now have to go back to these old ones. sometimes its hard to see the hands or the letters they sign. Also, its seems in the newer ones Bill explained it more or for the first time to Jen on camera cause this is a little faster paced and the student already knows the signs. But for me its kinda hard to understand with no idea how to sign the words are. this feels more like review compared to the ones with Jen. I will try my hardest and go through all of them. I will learn ASL by the end of 2019.
On his site he has lessons that you learn and then you watch these videos (that's why its called Lesson 2, since this is the second lesson on the site). That's how I learn. It's really detailed on how the sign word works, how it's signed, and the different versions of the word (if it has any). I'd recommend studying that and then watching the video, it helps a LOT. It's how I learn and I really enjoy doing it that way :)
This is my new hobby, I just love it and Bill makes me laugh. It is the third lesson I am following and the signs are easy to remember. I didn't think it would be so much fun learning this. Didn't think I would be able to follow your conversations. I am quite surprised at myself. I am a hearing person, I will make sure that my kids dont wait as long as i did to learn sign language.. I don't know any deaf person but It would be nice to be able to use it.

I LOVE THESE VIDEOS! Thank you for putting these out there. I work at a medical clinic, and we had a couple of patients come in who were deaf, and they inspired me to begin learning sign language. These videos are so fun to watch, and they make it fun to learn. I'm only on the second lesson, but I'm learning so much and am excited to continue!
Professor Bill, I just started to work as a teacher in a Disabled Students Attention Center (CAED in spanish) and to found your videos had helped me a lot! It is so interesting to learn ASL for me. I'm a certificated English teacher here in Mexico, and part of my job here is to help and teach deaf stedents the language.

I honestly almost gave up after the first lesson but I'm glad I stuck with it. It seems hard at first but rewatching previous videos and practicing along has helped so much. It is easyer having a student who is at the same learning level as we ara. Thankyou so much for the videos and not putting subtitles. It really does help.

These videos are fantastic. I took ASL about ten years ago, but I wasn't very focused at the time. ASL is really one of those languages where if you don't use it, you lose it. I recently decided to add a communications major and train to be an interpreter, and these videos are making me very proud of how much I retained!
I have started these lessons from the beginning despite previous classes and tutors in ASL. I enjoy this series because of its repetition. It was a fundamental part of my acquisition of French. Works equally well for sign language. Constanly repeat, build, and quiz on previous lessons. Good stuff!
Mr. Vicar , I like your videos because they show so many words at once and you repeat them after you discuss things so there isn't much confusion as to what the sign was. I'm not deaf so I don't have anyone to practice with so the internet is my only real way of learning and I thank you.
I took 1 semester at ARC learning sign and I learned a lot but after 3 months quickly lost a majority of it. After watching these videos it brought it all back and then some. I really enjoy these.
I'm currently taking an ASL class once a week at church. I've been wanting to have a good way to learn more, so I've been watching different videos. These videos seem to be the best I've seen so far. So many move so fast through things that I don't catch them the first time and have to go back again and again. With the words on the tv screen between them and with the review that they're doing and Bill's patience and humor as a teacher, I think it's finally sticking in my head. Thank you, Bill!

I recently started working at a facility with individuals who have Intellectual/Developmental disabilities. A lot of the clients are nonverbal (but fluent in ASL) and I felt terrible not being able to communicate effectively with them on a daily basis. I'm sooooooooo glad I found this!!! I'm an HR Admin Assistant at my job and we just hired an employee who's deaf. He taught me "good morning" and "thank you", but I wanted to learn some more on my own and surprised the crap out of him. I think these videos may help lol! I wanted to start learning ASL because I work in a retail pet store, and there's a customer who comes in who is deaf and I have always wanted to talk to him. I always wanted to learn a language other than my native one, but I never had the aptitude for verbal languages as I am more of a visual person. Thank you SO much for posting these videos, Mr. Vicars! I was fluent in SEE, but that was a couple decades ago, & I haven't used it much since. We recently had a hearing impaired young man join ou church, & I've found out just how much I've forgotten. Thankfully, he's patient & seems thankful for the attempt to keep him in the loop for our services. I've learned that there are TONS of signs I have forgotten, and he is learning ASL in school, so what I DO remember tends to lose him at times anyway. I'm going back to college to take a couple ASL courses this fall, but these videos are fun, easy to learn/remember, & will help speed things along. Everyone that spends much time with me has already been warned that I'll be signing what I speak a LOT. I've had difficulty finding much of a hearing impaired community in my town, but am planning on seeking input from the schools and my ASL instructor as well, as I know I'll need to use it more than a couple times a week.

Thank you so much for sharing these lessons for free! I make very, very little money, so I absolutely appreciate how accessible these videos are. I've only watched a handful of lessons so far, but I've never been able to pick up asl as quickly as when I watch these videos compared to every other asl lesson video I've seen, and I always recommend the LifePrint website to people looking to learn. The fingerspelling practice site has also helped tremendously. I would donate but as I said, I am super super broke and need to pay my rent, heh. Once I start my new job and can afford to give some moolah away I'll be more than happy to donate!

I want to thank you for these videos as they are helping me remember what I learned years ago. I recently found that my son is HH, and we are working on integrating ASL into our home. These videos are great for helping the other adults in the home learn. We use Signing Time for the children.
Lovely Dr. Bill you have made me Love ASL so much even though there are some few signs that are quite different to Kenya Sign Language [KSL] for example the sign of MOM, and more so letter 't'. well, am proud of you and I would wish to learn more and more ASL.

Yes, a palm-forward "V" on the side of the forehead is my (current) name sign. When I was young my name sign was on the arm. Then for a while it was just B-I-L-L (which half the time ended up in the ILY handshape. Then in graduate school for my doctorate (in Deaf Education) Boley Seaborn tapped a V to the top of the head -- making fun of my bald head, (which I actually prefer to having hair). Later, my colleagues at CSU Sacramento modified the name sign to the side of the head. :)

Thank you for these videos. My daughter is in 2nd grade and has been diagnosed with a severe expressive and receptive language disorder. I am VERY blessed to live near St Rita's School for the Deaf, where they offer an Apraxia School called "See and Say" where they incorporate sign language, as well as a very specialized teaching for these kids. The only one like it in the country! She just started last Monday.
However, I have found myself feeling quite ill-equipped to be a part of that school the way I have in her previous schools because 2/3 of the student body and many of the staff are Deaf. So, every day I am taking the first hour of my day once I drop her off to study your material.
I am hopeful that I will become at least somewhat sufficient so I can feel confident while I am there. I will also take part in their "clinics", when they have times of fellowship between Deaf students and sign language students for real life interaction. I didn't take their formal class because I took a beginners class years ago and feel that doing your online class daily will help me learn more quickly.
It is a humbling thing.....because when I walk in St. Rita's everyday I get a small taste of what it can be life for a d/Deaf person to walk around the rest of the world everyday.
Do you have any suggestions as to how to not feel like I can remember my signs when I'm there? I feel like I know so little that I'm afraid to even try, which I know is not smart. Thank you again!

thank you so much for these videos bill. I just started working a new job and the company is pro-deaf so about half the employees are deaf. Needless to say that was just unacceptable for me so I went through all the apps and about 20 different UA-cam channels, but you'd is the only one that made sense to me, I just pretend that it's me sitting there with god and ur actually talking to me. awesome advice and great tips bout asl. It's only been a week but I'm already having full conversations.

love your videos you do a great job breaking it down and teaching on a level that all can understand. i am intermediate with my signing and know most of what your saying but I do use your videos for review and they are great :)
I've been looking for a reliable sign course to help me with my sign until now I relied on a sign language dictionary app (sign asl) and scattered words usually learned from non deaf people and the signs were usually wrong or used in the wrong context. So thank you for sharing your love of a beautiful language so I can learn to better communicate with my customers and friends.
I strive to teach versions of signs that are well-recognized throughout the ASL-signing Deaf community at large. That provides a solid base from which a student can get involved in their local Deaf Community and "fine tune" their signing to match any local variations.
Most skilled Deaf signers can show you two or three different ways to sign most concepts (just as most Hearing skilled English speakers know two or three ways to say most concepts, e.g. sofa, couch, loveseat.)
The challenge (in the Hearing world) comes when folks in a certain region use words like divan, davenport, chesterfield, etc. to refer to a couch.
The same challenge occurs in the Deaf world when local Deaf sign regional versions of signs that aren't used in other regions.
So learning ASL (as with other languages) involves developing a general base of common signs and then a life-long process of learning more and more versions of signs and learning how to inflect those signs to create increasingly nuanced meanings.

I was heartbroken when this young man at my church had an interpreter and while I was speaking about hardships in my life, he liked what I said and wanted to meet me.
He knew most likely I couldn't Sign so he simply extended his hand and we shook on it.
It broke my freaking heart I Wanted to talk to HIM! I could tell he wanted to talk to me and he was also in a wheel chair from either birth or injury... I never want to be in that situation again. I'm learning to be ready any time someone needs help or needs a friend in a world where not everybody signs. I think it would be a cool thing for preachers in churches to learn asl or even just extend the courteously of bringing an interpreter, I wonder half the time if people even preach the Gospel to the deaf... And even besides that, I've heard them comment on how they just WISH people would AT LEAST learn the basics. Why should they have it harder! the channel Sign Duo inspired me as well when a drive thru employee said he was faking and made him wait almost an HOUR for his food...After throwing it out!
