- In today's video, we are going to be exploring the character of Kiwi. She's arguably the most mysterious character in Edgerunners, and it's left up to the viewer to fill in the blanks of her backstory. When I first watched the show, I was more mad at her than anything, but in subsequent viewings, her character and potential motivations appealed more and more to my writing brain.
Kiwi became less of a greedy, despicable traitor and more of a sympathetic, unsung victim of Night City.
As much of a mystery as she is, she has one of the more interesting arcs in the whole show. And had one of the best character designs, in my opinion!

While I understand why Kiwi did what she did , but like many in Night City she flew to close to the sun she got burned. ( Btw kiwi's design looks awesome )

If Maine didn't have his outburst and attack Kiwi during her dive, she would have found the information about David instead of Luci. And she probably would have sold David out immediately and he wouldn't have had a chance.

In my eyes, Kiwi's betrayal was inevitable from the moment Maine punched her out of the dive. After that and the following s*itstorm, Kiwi lost any faith she had in this team working out and from then on would be eyeing any 'out' she was afforded. So when Faraday came knocking with the offer of enough money to put Everything behind her, she thought that it might just be worth the risk. Unfortunately for her, she broke her own rule and paid dearly for it.
According to Faraday, he was told to kill anyone who knew about the skeleton. Even if she played by her rule, he would've betrayed her.

I liked her character, no honor among thieves, and for the most part she was probably more coworker than friend throughout her life with most people she was around for extended period of time. With her mask getting smashed was gruesome, and was odd how quickly it was side lined it wasn't oh my god Kiwi, it was more focused on the pychosis episode. Like can't imagine being fond of the people who took your jaw, then the group who brushes off doing an injury that would have been similar to the first one. Idk I was rooting for her.

After she betrayed the team, I was still rooting for her. And when she turned back, essentially betraying her own ethos, I prayed that she'd either make it out alive, or that I'd be vague enough that I could pretend she somehow survived, unlike Rebecca. {R.I.P.}

That opening quote gave me chills. "Beware a veteran in a world where most people die young". That encapsulates the Dark Future that Cyberpunk is set in so well.
I thought that she betrayed them because she realized Lucy was the reason for Maine and dorio dying. But at the last minute she didn't want the corporations to win so she helped her friends out

Kiwi was also seeing David and Lucy essentially speedrun the same route Maine and Dorio had before. Remember, it took Maine years, if not decades to succumb to cyberpsychosis, even though he didn't have the same tolerance for cyberware David had. Meanwhile despite his advantages over Maine in terms of how much tech he could take, David pushed himself to the brink Maine was on within a year or so of becoming an edgerunner, which also put Lucy in the same position as Dorio. Honestly I think Kiwi was just seeing the writing on the wall that the crew was doomed one way or another, so she wanted to pretty much dip out through the back door while she still could. At least, she thought she had a good way out of the situation. I think if she'd just told the crew that she wasn't into it anymore, she could have at least gotten herself out of the jam. Maybe back to where she started before she joined up with Maine and Dorio, but still in one piece.
As much as I disliked her at first Kiwi is a nice study in what a true neutral would do.
Kiwi did nothing wrong by Cyberpunk standards. Loyalty is always appreciated, and we sympathize with Maine's crew as heros, but... Are they really worth being loyal to? Kiwi is lost, she longs desperately for stability, for a person to lean on, but she's justifiably reluctant to trust anybody. Maybe this inner conflict is the very thing that makes her reckless.
I think it's funny how to be a netrunner you have to be smart (it's literally the Int build) and that all the netrunner characters including T-Bug are the ones actively trying to get tf out of Night City
With Faraday it could also be a devil you know situation. David was obviously starting to spiral bit by bit, so Kiwi could have wanted an out because she couldn't predict what David would be like in a while. But if she had worked with Faraday earlier, she propably thought she knew him well enough to predict what he was going to do and that she could have control of the situation long enough to get out
When i first watched the anime, i had the impression she did it because she had a feeling the crew wasn't going to survive and tried to save herself, but the betrayal got to her and decided to help her team one last time, even after what she did and knowing the chances of her team surviving being little to non.
Awesome video! You picked up on details I didn't catch when i first saw the anime and see more into the characters, its easy to pick up on dramatic moments but not subtle ones ^^

Kiwi is my favorite character, for me she's the personification of what Night City does. She plays by the city's rules and in the end gets chewed out by the city. Tragic, but at the very end I see that she still cares about the squad.

@@elitegamer9310 The TTRPG mentions feeding tubes, basically built-in straws. There's an entire culture of people (within the game) who feel that eating is an inefficient distraction, so only consume the basic nutrients needed via a liquid diet.

I think that highlights why Edgerunners is so well-liked; many people enjoy the complexity of the characters even if they only do so subconsciously. Mike Pondsmith, the creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop RPG described it as followed: “Cyberpunk is not about saving the world, it’s about saving yourself.” Kiwi selling out the others fits with that viewpoint, just as much as Deshawn trying to kill and the selling out V to save his own ass, Evelyn trying to rip off the Relic from the Voodoo Boyz in hopes of selling it in order to get a better life, and V selling out Songbird (if you choose that option), among many others from the video game. The unfortunate thing is that Johnny is right about the city being a meat grinder of despair and crushed dreams. Everyone is trying to save themselves. Some succeed, but not without sacrifices being made.

I've been saying it since I first finished the show, Kiwi didn't do anything wrong (it was cruel, but not wrong). Their crew had already lost multiple members to indulging a cyber addict to the point of cyberpsychosis, and they are doing it AGAIN with no end except for inevitable brutal death in sight. They are borderline abusive to her and resistant to any attempt to alter course. Add to that the city's reputation for killing people young, and what choice did Kiwi have? She could die with her friends, who were racing towards death, or betray them and try to escape (sending them to a death that may be sooner, but by maybe only a matter of days).
David made his choice after watching what Maine became, and then choosing to follow in his footsteps. He's lucky Lucy survived, Dorio wasn't so lucky. Kiwi was making the most of the options she had, as cruel as that was (and not like others hadn't caused unnecessary death in pursuit of their goals)

Somone once said that Maine and Dorio died when lucy called the medics to stop maine cyber psycho episode, just to save david. So kiwi lost her crew because if lucy making that call. Thus further pushing kiwi towards betraying Lucy since, Lucy betrayed the crew.
I feel like Lucy just gets a pass from the fan base for actively causing Maine and Dorio's death. Thanks for pointing that out. She along with Kiwi is definitely one of the flakiest characters in the crew, especially compared to Maine, David and Rebecca who are all 10 out of 10 ride or dies.

@@happycompy I think Lucy also fucks up by pushing the whole crew away refusing to work for them, instead of taking control of the situation and having the end goal of getting everyone on the moon, even if in the end the moon isnt even her goal anymore, she drops the ball a lot more than people are willing to notice or talk about and it kills me when I see Kiwi get hated on when Lucy played just as big of a role is not larger in getting David killed

Yeah kiwi was a much more interesting character, so was Rebecca. I don’t think the gangs goal was to go to the moon though, that was Lucy dream alone and david just wanted to help her.
I also have the feeling that after she got the files on David she rather protected David during the whole series from Arasaka's mercs and netrunners, not necessarily herself. That might also be why she does not want to join the crew. Are they looking for her or are they trying to catch David? We don't really get that. Iirc in the last episode the Saka execs say something about that they were always trying to get David. They would take Lucy, too, but they are more interested in David because of his high cyberwear tolerance.
I loved Kiwi from the start but I was never upset with her betrayal. Sometimes you just have to put you first and in a world like cyberpunk that’s magnified. Sometimes when asking someone to stay loyal to you even when the situation is dangerous to them, you yourself are the selfish one ironically.
It's kind of really interesting when I think about it because it's not just Lucy and Kiwi. T-Bug also is a net runner, one who is way smarter than the company she keeps who wants to escape Night City. T doesn't trust people and no shocker seeing who we get our final job from. In fact V can be rather rude and bring up old rumors about her just before accepting the heist. Oddly enough out of the three T-bug might be alive but is in a vegetated state.
My thought is Kiwi was ready to betray the team, but the team would be alive with hurt feelings. When Fairday crossed that line and had her betray the team in a way that would see them killed, I think she went to Fairday because she betrayed herself. She had become someone that uses people, and subconsciously she knew Fairday would give her, her punishment for that. He would also give her, the only redemption she could have, and it may not have been ideal, but death is a way out of Night City.
Kiwi was my favorite character in edgerunners and while it did pain me to see how the gang ended it makes sense why she wanted to dip entirely nightcity is city with the false hope of opportunity and freedom when it's moreso a giant deathtrap with everyone trying to make thier own way by great video btw

Net Runners wanting out of NC seems to be a common trend, V’s Net runner in 2077 also wants out. It might have something to do with the role the play in the crew, Fixers are safe as they aren’t the ones in the line of fire, Drivers like Fareday are focused on the road in front of them, mercs/solos like V and David are chasing the thrill and the fame, but the runners see the hole picture and know that the if they don’t get out they will die.
All other members of the crew have almost blinders on, only seeing their part of the job, the runners see everything. They are the ones who have to watch as the crews they’ve gone to care for get taken out, likely multiple times as they usually aren’t in as much risk which will definitely take a toll on them.
Then you run into the issue of if their crew doesn’t get taken out early, if a crew lives long enough then they will start taking bigger and bigger risks. If the runner doesn’t get out by that point the crew will eventually get job so big that when it fails the Runner is targeted too.
Something else I couldn’t help but notice is that besides some BD girls, Lucy and Kiwi are often the ones seen completely nude. Since they can’t afford fancy cooling suit for net running, they have to consistently expose themselves to achieve their greatest value for themselves and their group. It’s interesting how nakedness, in cyberpunk, can be linked to exploitation. Even David gets hit with this as he is seen 96% nude and ends up a pawn in Faraday’s scheme.
Which could mean that the last shot of Lucy completely covered in a space suit as her being completely free from exploitation, all thanks to David, which makes the ending one smidge bit happier.

reason #9000 to keep your netrunner at arms length in all things, and now an actual tabletop anecdote: our runner left a message in a maelstrom system after we liberated some goods for a night market from them, theyre still actively hunting us even after that netrunner died and the player left the game. Our team has gotten off way easier than most crews in NC when it comes to netrunner shenanigans (helps that its 2030 and not 2070s).
...unrelated to cyberpunk, as someone born in the 1980s it feels a bit surreal to realize 2030 is only five years away.
damn i think that is actually accurate, the one time i played RED i was a netrunner, got some tech i really shouldn't have and got my crew into some shit too.

Kiwi did "Nothing wrong" by Cyberpunk standards. I don't think she came back for anything other than to get paid. Faraday manipulated her, presumably with whatever relationship they had. "We owe each other that much." -- Why not just take a digital transfer. Even face to face, the transaction is digital as we see when Becca pays David for Pilar's arms.
So Faraday tricked her, and she wanted to get even. That's really the only thing I can see Kiwi caring about. Revenge. "If I'm going down you're coming with me.".
She otherwise is a very neutral person. Pragmatic. Self-sacrifice isn't really her shtick. Probably died imagining the surprised look on Faradays face that Kiwi lived long enough to betray him back.
Kiwis can definitely fly. Once.

I love Kiwi because she was honest from the jump. The whole time her goal was to leave Night City and being part of the crew was a step to make that plan a reality. In her eyes the betrayal was probably seen as a new direction to facilitate that goal but she eventually felt bad about it because she realized she was attached to the crew.
I dont think Maine punching her in the face was the sole reason for the change but it was definitely an early catalyst

I think another aspect for Kiwi actions is that she is experienced and understands cyber psicosis too well. In her eyes David pretty much have no chances of not following his predecessor steps, and most likely destroying everything around him. She is trying to save herself in a way she can. And after being betrayed by Faraday she just understands that life is over and tries to do last things to people she cares.
Kiwi is honestly my favorite of the women in Edgerunners, with Rebecca coming in second. I think she shows just how brutally cutthroat Night City is and just how much that can fuck up a person. I doubt she ever really truly trusted the crew as why would she? Whatever previous crews she had either died because Night City is brutal and unforgiving or likely treated her badly as netrunners tend to be viewed as tools at best at times (pretty much everyone is in Night City).
If you could get out of the literal constant warzone that is Night City and away from all the horrible memories it would bring if you lived that long in it I am sure you would. Most people that work as edgerunners in the setting aren't really happy people and a lot are either desperate for some kinda goal.
Out of all of the crew I think her and Lucy's dreams were probably the most human really. They just wanted to leave the city really, go some place better.

Youth and exuberance is no match for old age and treachery.
Kiwi was a veteran of the corporate wars. If you pay attention to her and Falco's interactions, and even Faraday's, there's hints that she served. I think that's where she got her face plate, an injury from the war that wasn't covered by the veteran bill because (cosmetic).
I also suspect that Kiwi had full intentions of always helping the crew in the end. She just had to play along with Faraday's little game. After all, what out did they have? They botched a job for Arasaka, thanks to Maine. Thing is with Arasaka, eventually they tie up loose ends. Kiwi knows this well.
Faraday was offering corpo immunity and a stack of creds for her participation, as was said, she was looking for a way out of Nightcity.
However, when she was betrayed and contacted the crew to give them Lucy's location... I believe this was always the plan. She had to spike Lucy to track her.. and the only time she would have been able to do so without Lucy knowing.. would have been while she was diving Lucy in the pool.
This, of course, delves into the 'what if's' and head canon.. as the character didn't get as much development so it's hard to pin down her motivation. The only evidence that I have is that she is a former veteran of the corpo war and loyalty to your unit/crew stands above all. False flag, play the game, turn double cross when she secured the objective by turning David and the crew onto Faraday, exfil the field and finally retire.
Anyways, my personal conclusion is that Kiwi did nothing wrong. Backed into a corner between a failed Arasaka mission that would likely lead to an Arasaka Ninja on their doorstep one day. Faraday offered her a way out with corpo immunity. She was true to herself in the end.

What I see in Kiwi, I see in Songbird (So Mi) from Phantom Liberty. They're both just desperate to survive and will do anything to survive, even if it means lying to, cheating, stealing from, betraying or killing their friends. They know it is impossible for people in Night City to help you out of the goodness and generosity of their heart without any incentive or being taken advantage of. So Songbird lied to V about the neural matrix being able to cure V of the Relic that is killing him/her. Songbird betrayed Reed, Myers, Hansen, Alex and V just for freedom and survival. The problem with both Kiwi and Songbird is their lack of trust towards others, probably due to them being backstabbed and betrayed in the past. If they had learned to open up again, be honest and sincere and asked for help, David might even help Kiwi and V might also have helped Songbird out of goodwill.
All in all, it is all karma in the end. If you plot against others, you should be prepared to be plotted against by others. You scheme and betray others, and you should be prepared to be schemed on and betrayed by others. If you want to kill others, you should also be mentally prepared to be killed by others. Kiwi and Songbird plotted and schemed against others, and they both got what they deserved (The Tower/King of Pentacles ending in Phantom Liberty where Songbird was captured alive and returned to NUSA should have theoretically been the canon ending, seeing how the it is the only ending that influence V's fate at the end of the game).

I honestly never felt bad about Kiwi's betrayal. David's crew went off the deep end. She was dealing with crazy people.
Kiwi was always one of my favorites. You can just tell she's the type to have half a deck of cards under the table, and although you should just pound the table tell her to "F' off" and leave (for your own good),,,,,,,, you have the urge to stay and see just what she has planned. Psshhht, and as a guy, you can just tell Kiwi would be a riot during adult-fun-time.
Edgerunner's mission kit gave alot more backstory to Kiwi.
i dont get why David and the crew work for faraday again after he already betrayed them and pretty much got Maine killed. They were doing fine before and didnt really NEEDED the money he was offering.
Oh yeah in the world of cyberpunk games kiwi did what is known as "the morally right thing to do" also known as "the gamer move", which is throw your team under the bus when they'd rather grind IP than eddies. The city wins, the city always wins thats what made edge runners such a good adaptation

when she betrays the crew I honestly couldnt feel mad and I wasn't completly sure why, at base level understanding its obvious that she is completly tired of the circumstances, she's a smoker which is already a massive sign that she's under stress and her tool of coping is unhealthy, the fact she's offered a get out of jail free card its like why wouldnt you take that, I think people that can't forgive her or can't understand her situation are actually more selfish than Kiwi was when she took the deal, Kiwi told Lucy don't trust anyone, and that's a statement of someone who is both jaded but experienced, she knew what she was talking about and she wasn't being considered, being told to not trust anyone is a tough lesson to learn just from being told, but even more when you actively fail the lesson, somewhere Lucy messed up and it gets David killed, I think it was when she kept queit about what David was able to do, and simply failing to communicate afterwards, Kiwi tried to communicate and Lucy just failed at it, which is also why I dont fall head over heels for Lucy, they're all some type of severly flawed and it just hurts to see a group of people (all they have) fail eachother so spectacularly

Almost everything Kiwi had done was understandable to me. Maine punched her when she was vulnerable and David was going down the same path at record speed. His recklessness would get everyone killed soon and she could see that. Her only fault was accepting Faraday's deal. Not only was Faraday untrustworthy, but there was no way a corp would let any merc who knows highly sensitive information go. She should have left as soon as she handed over Lucy.
Hopefully we'll get more backstory on her in the tabletop mission kit.

Given Maine's emotional reaction to Sasha's death in the music video, do you think he distanced himself from her replacement Kiwi (and possibly Lucy) to avoid the emotional suffering of losing another Netrunner? Even for Edgerunners, Netrunners have a high mortality rate.
When I first saw this series I was under the impression that Kiwi betrayed Lucy because she held her responsible for the death of Maine and Dorio, two people she was seen that friends even if she didn’t sowed it.
The only thing Kiwi did wrong was effectively side with Arasaka by selling the crew out.
Everyone has their price and as their desperation rises, their price goes down.

All it takes is one bad job to ruin a crew. I honestly thought Kiwi preferred being the cold veteran that always everyone always respected and feared her a little. If you don't like how people are treating you, let them know. If they still don't change, then they aren't people you should hang around. Maine going Cyber psycho is obviously not controllable, but asking the crew for a little for recognition wouldn't be out of line, and knowing David I'm sure he would have given it.

the crew is the same people in the past, present and future. david becomes maine when trying to control things to be safe and then the initial cyberpsycho when losing control. lucy becomes dorio in love and then kiwi in dispair in the end of the story. Rebeca becomes her brother and then that boy who admires david and dies tragically in a trap. Sad but that's how it is.

I understood Kiwi from the start. And her death hurt almost as much as Rebecca's death. When you are the old person in a young person's profession, you will be tired of it all and try to take any out you can when you do not feel you belong.
Catra from She-Ra would make a good video,that character is a mess in a very tragic sense.

I loved al the Edge Runner crew. Especially with the ending, I couldn't bring myself to hate Kiwi. Like David, Maine, Dorio, Beca, Sasha, and Pilar, none of them deserved the ending they got. Kiwi, Dorio, Beca, Sasha, Pilar, and David all got gunned down like animals in the street. Maine was about the only one to die a warrior's death, but he did so after going ape. Doc is also a great character as he sums the whole series up, "Go on become that legend... another tale for the next dreamer.". Just a bunch of people who are writing their own hero story with no room for anyone but side characters.
