Loved how you got right on this. I'm starting to test Max for Live devices with Push 3 as well. Chiral by Fors works, you can even load presets standalone.
Wondering two things, if we can set up track delay on the daw FIRST like u preselected the cv outs. And the other is how latency would be using an es-8 hooked into a connect laptop would be. I opted for the non-standalone Push 3 for now, no way was i paying 1000 extra for an i3, so lets see what the future holds for the platform. When the cpu in the push becomes more in line with an i7 or so, latency may no longer be that same issue....
You should be able to make a seperat in THROUGH channel routing directly to OUT1/2, then add the delay on the master. It did that with my 909 and got it down to the sample.
Great video! Love this content, Ableton Push is awesome and I love playing my tiny modular system (Mother32 + Maths + Ears + Expert Sleepers) with it. This gives me some great ideas for expanding my use of Ableton Live.
Yo alex! You're pretty dammn good house producer! Would be great if you can show us how you treat the modular to come up with those beats. Especially the drums sounding so good 👍🏽
Thank you for showing the input latency!!! That was a lot of latency, imho.... YIKES! Still really curious about the ADAT ins and outs, nobody is showing that yet... 🤗😁👊
I think there was a module that did Ableton link. I wonder if that would tighten things up. If you are monitoring from the modular you could output extra channels from the push 3 to like an optx or something.
just learned something reading through the ableton's article "CV Tools: Overview & Technical " , if you increase your sample rate, it divides the buffer by that amount "Buffer Size (number of samples) ÷ Sample Rate (kHz) = Expected Latency (ms)." So, you could try upping your sample rate a bunch to get much lower latency too. It does make the cpu work harder but, if ur plugged in shouldnt be an issue
hmm... i guess any default latency compensation for the inputs doesn't work in this particular case, since the clock signal would get delayed together with the other audio tracks? i suppose if you were to clock your eurorack via midi somehow you'd probably have the beats align perfectly. still a bummer you can't adjust track delay on the unit though.
I’m going to keep working on it and will report back with another video if I find anything that helps with it. If they put an offset control into cv tools, that would be the best solution in theory. CV Tools may also not be the best solution for clocking in general, as I have had issues with it and my ES8, but so far it’s pretty good on this and I just wanted to show that it worked for the people that were wondering.
Hi, thanks for the Video. Can you please test this for me? Does CV TOOL now support Delay Compensation? I ask Ableton for this 3 years ago here. L10-SUG-3751. They answer me with: Indeed this is not a bug but rather the absence of Delay Compensation for CV Tool and it is expected.
Interesting Looking forward to more videos. So no track delay (yet)?😳😱 How’s sending cv (not just gate or clock ) like lfos etc to your modular? Does it go into audio rate? Also bummer u need the pc to make the cv connections!😢
Thanks for watching! I didn’t see track delay, and don’t know if it saves with settings from computer to standalone but because processing is different, I don’t expect it to be easy to set. I haven’t done any cv yet, I feel like clock always gets overlooked so I started there. I’ll make another video answering those questions asap.
So sample buffer goes lower than 128? All the way to 32? That's good to know (and wasn't in the manual). Currently running either ufx+ or ucx, so kind of spoiled with rme latency goodness
This is the cable. www.perfectcircuit.com/hosa-ymm-232.html You need to set the push as the audio interface when you are using the laptop to set it up. Then when you go to standalone mode, it will continue to use those outputs on the push.
Is there a reason you prefer cv tools for clock instead of clicking via midi into something like ES FH-2? The FH-2 options also lets you send tons of automation lanes by adding CV expanders.
The only reason is to cut down on anything extra. Saving money and space in the case. I have tons of options, including the Happy Circuits Missing Link, which I’ll probably end up using long term, but I’m all about trying to have less stuff to bring and showing people what they can do without buying another thing.
That’s something I will try as well. I wasn’t able to change that in this session, presumably because it was already set in the session i loaded. Will try with a blank one.
Yeah that latency is not acceptable it sounds like it's in the double digits of milliseconds. Can you not use a negative track delay in standalone mode? That normally solves the issue on computer.
hm, im surprised they dont have track delay in the standalone.. maybe its some hidden setting, although the manual doesnt have anything i could find. For the cv tools, I just got cables to try this out with a moog subharmonicon. If I can't get it working in standalone ill try your method of transfering the set.
hmm, when latency is a problem is usually when I'm playing pads live, but you were just playing a track, or did I miss something? Wouldn't track delay fix this issue? ua-cam.com/video/gJTtaXFoZbg/v-deo.html
I haven’t found track delay thru the push interface in standalone yet, however it very well may be there. Latency is an issue because I’m playing a eurorack system in sync with the tracks in push, and I want them to be as close as possible so they mix well and so I can do better hybrid sets.
@@alx-106 I just tried to get track delay to show up on my Push 2 and it looks like you can't access it from the Push. What a bummer! I thought you could do this, but you can only change the mix, panning, monitoring, I/O, input type and input channel. They should totally add track delay. I bet I could hack one up in Max For Live, but it would be better to have it on the screen by default. I'm down researching in the Ableton forums, but it looks like you are right and track delay compensation adjustment requires you to tweak this on the computer.
To create a clock for synching external instruments, yes, you have to put the clock tool on a channel. It can be on any channel I think, and in Ableton, I usually use the master... However, not really sure what you can do on the Push as I returned mine. Metronome can be turned on easily in the global settings if a click track is all you are after. But yeah, they should literally just have a setting for clock out on the hardware but that isnt a thing.
@@alx-106 It's strange that smaller and cheaper devices come with a dedicated analogue clock out, while Akai and Ableton do not seem to understand that losing 1 of the very few CVs just to clock a modular system is crazy. It's as if they read about a modular system, but never used one... They claim 4 CV outs, when in reality it is 3 + clock. I think that the best way to keep all 4 CVs is to buy a second hand synth like the TD3, feed it midi and get clock from it... Cheaper than a midi to clock module ;)
omg the video ive been looking for

Yeah, this video is gold. Thanks for the CV Tools heads up. Also the current omission of track delay.
best video yet on the push 3, also someone who actually makes good music is a plus
Hell yeah let’s go!
Shit yes, and you are the best guy to figure this out. Push 3 is such a huge surprise.

Nice one! Have you tried if the cv tools work over the ADAT outputs? Would be nice to know if it is possible to have 8 channels of CV more.
Have not tried, but I have an es8 I plan to set up for adat, I just need to get some cables…
@@alx-106 sounds great! Hope to see some more videos of you using the push3 with your Modular.
I was thinking about using the boredbrains optx as an ADAT expander for the Push 3, seems to be a perfect fit.
@@jimmygray3452 indeed, optx looks amazing and has been on my list for a while, Push 3 begs for it for sure.

can you change the clock phase to achieve track delay?
It’s not a part of cv tools so don’t think so… maybe a different max for live thing?
Can the Push 3 use an external USB Audio card like the Expert Sleepers ES-9? It does not require any proprietary drivers on MacOS
Maybe ES-8 via ADAT?
But you can compensate by sending the CV a bit earlier
Does 96k improve latency enough to make up for the CPU hit?
