Nice DAW-less setup. no web browser, no messaging, no interruptions. Ableton Push 3 is not a computer in the sense that 99% of people mean when they say computer. I use a Launchpad Pro mk2 or sometimes a Korg Electribe 2 as my DAWless sequencing centerpiece. Cheaper, less capable, and more difficult to use. But that's my budget 🙂
Ain't no shame in an Electribe 2, they're actually brilliant for the money, we use it to sequence synths, as part of our jam table and as a standalone single beat making unit, and while they're limited in some key ways, its part of the fun.
I dig this setup a lot. I've been thinking about creating a dawless corner of my own when I re-organize my room based on my Novation Circuit Tracks and maybe my Launch Key Mini (if I can split the USB for power AND a device). I've yet to figure out what to pair it with but having just watched this, maybe a couple of Modal Skulpt SE or Volcas, an external mixer and another small synth? I would't have thought about using an external mixer to add anything else until now.
yeah getting everything into one mixer would be good - that's kind of how the push is functioning here (and more of course). The Circuit Tracks does have audio in as well though - so one more synth that compliments the circuit tracks would be a great start!
@@Taetro Thanks for the reply! Your right about the Circuit. Also, your video got me thinking about running either some Volcas and/or Skulpt SE's through the Circuit Tracks to be MIDI controlled, and then having another one running outboard to the mixer for live jamming. Maybe a Roland Go Mixer Pro-X would be the right choice, and just record via phone? Its not as high-brow as a Push 3 but it would get me 5 synths and 4 drum tracks and cheap (relatively)!
@@tosmixno I would imagine that the SP-4045 and Circuit Tracks fulfill too many of the same roles. Maybe you could use one to act as another synth/sample instrument for the other? I've not paid much attention to the 404 though, it didn't strike my interest, workflow-wise, so I really don't know.
Hi Taetro! Love your stuff. For the last song in this video, did you record that simple acoustic guitar lick using a microphone or by plugging an acoustic (with electronics) right into the Push 3? Is the latter method viable or does it end up sounding far less good?
@@Taetro ok thanks! How about in general: would you say it's better to record acoustic guitars using a mic as opposed to, say, plugging directly into Push?
Great clip. Just a question about MSB LSB PC# on the Push 3 to external MIDI as you do with the Akia MPCs? I would also need to change the reverb, volume etc through it to & whatever else it has via midi implementation charts. The idea is to have an hour or two live set with this hooked up various desktop synthesizers.
This is a great set up, and I’d like to see a list of components such as which desk you used. What matters is you’re not using a desktop computer. An Ableton push three is as much a computer as any MPC, or even drum machine ever made. How many of those machines were labeled “rhythm computers“?
The push wobbling on the stand when touched makes me uncomfortable haha, nice work though! Can you play the drum pads on the push easily in this setup?
I wonder if the T12 would output multichannel from the Push 3 like it does with the MPCs. I presume so. We use the T16 with an MPC One and its brilliant, other than the lack of dedicated return channels.
I'd love to see what you think of this setup in the context of a "live set" - is it flexible and malleable enough to adapt to a more improvisational style? Thanks for the video!
Do you connect Reface and Lemondrop to SP-404 at the same time using both L and R line inputs? Or do you just connect one of them at a time to L/MONO input?
I use the same stereo cable to connect either the reface or lemondrop (or anything else external). so unfortunately not both at the time, but it’s fine for now. The alternative would be adding a mixer but I don’t feel the need for it yet. TE TX-6 mixer would fit well though
I’ve seen some people recommend an iPad + audio interface. You could also think about a multitrack recorder, or boss looping station. I guess it depends if you just want to record linearly or you want to jam
Why am I the only one that thinks the SP-404s effects are complete worthless?? Great video though and really dig the setup. Been using hardware only for years now and am just feeling so over the inconvenience… considering the Push 3 SA but it’s a scary change. I guess you’ve not had some of the issues others have been plagued with upon startup?
I'm curious how the audio of the lemondrop and the yamaha both get into the SP404. The front input on the 404 is being used for a mic, so that leaves the inputs at the top of the 404. But, that is a left and right pair, so are the yamaha and lemondrop each getting plugged into one and are mono? Or is there some kind of small mixer or something behind there to let each of them be stereo? It would be awesome to see a cabling diagram of this setup to visualize how the audio flows through everything.
@@Taetro Aha, nice. That works nicely I'm sure. I've thought getting a small mixer for plugging in a handful of items like keys and synths and such to have the output of the mixer go into my SP404 mk2 to do a set up like this and have a space to create and play without a computer involved.
@@ryan1845 Possibly. I might use something a little smaller and/or simpler to make it easier to use in a live setting plus make it easier to store and put away when I'm not using it.

I'll buy through your link, if I do get them because thank you for the many things I've learnt and will learn from your videos. APC64 arriving in a few days :D
Is midi synced up between the devices? For example if you have a percussive delay or effect on the quarter note, can that timing be pushed to your devices? Are SP and Push locked to the same tempo?
Hi, I am curious about your JBL monitors. I have just purchased the same ones, but I am so annoyed with white noise from them, especially from the left one. Do you experience the same behaviour? And if you do, doesn't it distract you? In between, thanks a lot for your Ableton tutorials!
Call your setup 'DAWless' instead of 'no computer' and you have all mouths of haters shut. I like this kind of studio so much... It's a way more music-centric and inspirational than endlessly switching between music gear and mouse pad in DAW-based solutions.
I agree!!! music centric and inspirational is exactly the kind of work environment I want. Unfortunately there are many people online who think they’re musicians, but instead of making music they log a lot of hours online pocket watching and complaining about words like dawless and questions like ‘what is a computer’. so odd!
You guys haven't seen Tetris the movie do you? You would know what exactly is a "computer" (or PC or that thing) haha. I really liked this video! Thank you Taetro!
i was confused at first because i thought you sent the audio with the microcosm effect into the 404... and then was wondering when you skipped back how you would then send it back to the microcosm. you would have to switch the inputs and outputs around everytime right? but then looking at it again it seems you just recorded the epiano without the effects right?
Correct, the microcosm comes after the 404. So whatever I capture with skip back, I have the option to record it dry OR with the effects of the microcosm
@@Taetro ok thats pretty cool, i was jsut thinking about using the skip back funktion to capture potentially random generated moments which you might not be able to recreate... but i dont really know the microcosm, does it work with random effects?
I wouldn’t say it’s “random” but I guess it kind of is because there will be moments you can’t always replicate with the granular effects. It is great to capture those moments, I’ve found myself just recording long takes on the push to capture it. I hope ableton will add a Skip Back style effect someday. They’ve got it for midi but not for audio
Hey everyone, i want to start making music and i dont have a pc, does anyone know a touchpad that records as well or is the one he shows in the vid one of those?
Many will work when connected to a phone, and if you use Bluetooth midi it’s even better because you don’t need a cable. Do a little research on your specific phone and gear combo before buying though!
I would say the "no computer" and "DAWless" labels are rather meaningless these days. If something has an operating system, even if we interact with it through dials and buttons, and it even has a fairly detailed display, it is a computer. If no mouse or keyboard meant "no computer", a Microsoft Surface or an iPad would qualify. A computer generally has input, storage (even if volatile, not necessarily HD), processing and output. A large chunk of electronic music gear these days has those. One example is the Korg Opsix/Modwave/Wavestate lineup. Sure, they are 37-key "standalone" keyboards, but they literally have a small computer in them. The music and the art will always be more important than the gear.
True!!! The flow matters as well. Interacting with an instrument that is technically a computer is different than interacting with a literal computer imo
@@TaetroI agree; I just rented an op-1 and have been learning to write and record tracks on it. Even though it’s technically a little computer, it doesn’t feel like using a computer. It feels like using a 4 track tape machine that happens to have a built in synth, drum machine, and sampler, that can also fit in a bag and go with me anywhere. It’s just a different experience than what we think of as a computer. Most people think of a computer as either a laptop or a desktop. I mean, our phone is a computer, the mpc one is a computer, the sp404 is a computer. But in the context of this video, people should know what you mean when you say “no computer.”
@@Taetro Very true, whatever gets your creativity going is what works. I think the big part of the negative "computer" experience is the lack of immediacy; turning it on (or waking it up or jiggling the mouse to make the desktop pop up), starting the DAW, setting up a new project, loading plugins. Some musicians may have their workstation running all the time, with a DAW template always loaded, but for most, it is easier to reach for a dedicated hardware unit (I guess that is the key, the hardware being dedicated to music making) and start jamming. For those with laptops that get used for other things in life, getting it out of the bag and getting it ready for an inspiration session may be an unconscious discouragement from getting that idea down. I think smart devices with music apps are a decent compromise; you can pull them out any time anywhere and just start creating.
As time goes on, I think the term "DAWless" becomes less meaningful and less accurate. What it really comes down to most of the time is "do I use a mouse and keyboard when l make music?". This setup is a perfect example of that. Sure, there's a "DAW" and a "computer", but its the removal of the mouse, keyboard, and computer screen that makes you feel more connected to the individual pieces of gear. That's what makes the experience and workflow so different and immersive. We need a new term... but "Peripheral-less" or "Decentralized Interface" doesn't have the same ring to it.
The fact you're not interested does not make it less true....I just did bother. 0:07 Computerfree??? I see AT LEAST 2 BIG computers, being the Push and the SP404Mk2....If those aren't computers, I don't know what are.....I'm out...CLICKBAIT!!

I'd love to see what you think of this setup in the context of a "live set" - is it flexible and malleable enough to adapt to a more improvisational style? Thanks for the video!
I think it could be reeeeaallly great! I want to document the jam process with this setup so stay tuned.
Great presentation many thanks for sharing your experience and passion 😊👍🏻
Using the ocarina to make birds is INSANE
Do you connect Reface and Lemondrop to SP-404 at the same time using both L and R line inputs? Or do you just connect one of them at a time to L/MONO input?
I use the same stereo cable to connect either the reface or lemondrop (or anything else external). so unfortunately not both at the time, but it’s fine for now. The alternative would be adding a mixer but I don’t feel the need for it yet. TE TX-6 mixer would fit well though
@@Taetro Thanks!
Such a great video, very inspirational.
What would you recommend in replacement of the Push, if you don't have 2k lying around?
I’ve seen some people recommend an iPad + audio interface.
You could also think about a multitrack recorder, or boss looping station. I guess it depends if you just want to record linearly or you want to jam
Sonicware Smpltrek could be an option at a decent price...
I use the same stereo cable for both, switching it as needed. currently not using them simultaneously
@@Taetro Aha, nice. That works nicely I'm sure. I've thought getting a small mixer for plugging in a handful of items like keys and synths and such to have the output of the mixer go into my SP404 mk2 to do a set up like this and have a space to create and play without a computer involved.
The reface has a handy 3.5mm aux in / through, but it’s a little noisy
@@daveskull81Tascam Model 12?
@@ryan1845 Possibly. I might use something a little smaller and/or simpler to make it easier to use in a live setting plus make it easier to store and put away when I'm not using it.
Awesome setup! Sounds really nice! 😊
I'm seriously thinking of getting a pair, their website says 30 day returns, 2 year warranty. I'm waiting on refunds on other equipment before I push the button.
Please reveal to me your secrets of the knobs!!! Hahaaa. I watched it back wondering if I missed it in the video.
sorry remy I had to wait until this kit was released!! they come with the new travel case :) sweetwater.sjv.io/oqOjzn
Unfortunately there are many people online who think they’re musicians, but instead of making music they log a lot of hours online pocket watching and complaining about words like dawless and questions like ‘what is a computer’. so odd!
Do you send the audio from the reface through the lemon drop and then to the sp?
no just controlling the lemon drop in this case
You guys haven't seen Tetris the movie do you? You would know what exactly is a "computer" (or PC or that thing) haha. I really liked this video! Thank you Taetro!
The heart of the whole thing is a linux computer 😅
How is the low end in the jbl? Bedroom dj approved?
Great setup 👌
musicians before the computer invented

i was confused at first because i thought you sent the audio with the microcosm effect into the 404... and then was wondering when you skipped back how you would then send it back to the microcosm. you would have to switch the inputs and outputs around everytime right? but then looking at it again it seems you just recorded the epiano without the effects right?
Great video!
Thanks!!
Do you have an affiliate link for that amazing desk?
thank you for asking! I'm not sure if they make this exact one anymore, but here's a link to one that is almost exactly the same amzn.to/3O9ypdZ
Do you use ableton’s pre-amp for your base guitar? Or a real amp
the routing is completely explained in the video.
@@Taetro ahw sorry I missed the beginning part a bit 😳
The jam sounded great by the way!
thanks!!!
Where do you get those knobs for 404?
here! sweetwater.sjv.io/oqOjzn
Hey everyone, i want to start making music and i dont have a pc, does anyone know a touchpad that records as well or is the one he shows in the vid one of those?
The closest you can get without a computer is using your phone! Many good apps like Koala, or Ableton Note!
@@Taetro Which touchpads work with them apps?
Many will work when connected to a phone, and if you use Bluetooth midi it’s even better because you don’t need a cable. Do a little research on your specific phone and gear combo before buying though!
@@Taetro Thanks man!
@@Taetro Hey man, do you know any touchpads that work with some keyboards that i wont need a pc for?
I have a electric keyboard 🎹, there's a way to emulate that on Ableton? Someone knows how I can do that?
what
Does this setup work with Push 2?
No. Push 2 doesn’t have audio interface and missing the computer.
You would need a computer + audio interface, but maybe you could basically recreate the experience of not having to touch the computer using push 2??
wow! this is an awesome setup! but it is so expensive :(
I would say the "no computer" and "DAWless" labels are rather meaningless these days.
And WHERE are those MK2 knobs from?!?!? Sleeek. Not a fan of the Chromacaps on the Mk2.
I will tell you on thursday.
Right it just like doesn’t even make sense. Laptopless!!
I like :D
Thanks jabz
sweet setup, but dang $$$$$$$$$$$
But your Ableton Push 3 IS a computer :)
Very cool.
Money
yes things cost money
Please rename your video. „…with NO PC-MONITOR“ thx
no :)
The fact you're not interested does not make it less true....I just did bother.
0:07 Computerfree??? I see AT LEAST 2 BIG computers, being the Push and the SP404Mk2....If those aren't computers, I don't know what are.....I'm out...CLICKBAIT!!
Ahahahhahhahhaha 😂😂😂

Neat set-up, if only push 3 standalone didn't cost $2000 (even more in Europe) 🥲
I feel you on that one. Hopefully a sale or discount comes soon! But it’s still early
distraction free! i would just have to put my phone in another room, along with my 10 month old and 2 year old. lol
Lol just let the 2 year old take care of the 10 month old! It’ll be fine. Maybe send them outside for the day???
