@@cousinjim1I’m a Okuma rod user as well . I’ve caught 100 pound tunas on pch 701 xh 20-50 rod with Penn fathom 30ii speed with 40lb mono and 30lb flouro 20yards for my leader with a size 2 J hook. This is my go- to set up. I come all the way from Utah every year to go tuna fishing, and I use to go out of Seafourth but I’ve changed to Fishetmans Landing. I have trip in June the 28th on the Tomahawk for two days, hope you can make it Cousin Jim
Thanks, Cousin Jim, for this detailed intuitive information about your fishing setups. I really like this. I don’t think anyone else has done this in this great detail. I’m just curious, back in the day when I was still fishing, it seemed like everyone was using Penn Reels, have Penn fallen off or has everyone else caught up? What’s your thoughts. Great video.

Hey cousin Jim. You have to try fishing out of Dana wharf sportfishing in Dana point if you get down this way let me know I would love to go fishing with you on a Orange county fishing boat
60lb is pretty light unless your using that for daytime jigging. I run 60lb on my 15T, and 100lb on Mak 16, 130 on Mak20, and even heavier on my Mak50. Nighttime, I use my Mak 16 or 20 with either 100lb or 130lb on at least a xxx rated rod.
just saw your 100+digit catches. you again described your big setup an i am curious how an why you came up with that braid/line setup for your Makaira. i understand that the rod you use is a 60lb rod so 60lb mono.most folks use that Mak for 80/100lb
I don't remember the max drag for my makaira but it is under 60# a lot of the time the fish are deep and 100# braid is thick compared to the 60# as you saw in the video I was getting to the deep fish when the 100# braid was scoping out and not reaching the depth, and my rod landed a 100# 150# and I handed it to Wesley for a 170# I believe I can catch a 300# fish with 60 braid as long as I don't push the drag limits on the initial runs. 16 anglers 18 fish my rod caught 3 when I hit my white line it is 100# If the fish are to big for my 60# I can tie a leader on my 100 and keep fishing but I don't think that will ever happen! tight lines my friend good question hope this helped
Another banger from cousin Jim 🎉
thanks for watching
Thanks Cousin Jim for the info! I’ll be on the legend in august with some friends. Fist time. Excited to be going!
