That’s a quality review right there! Well done brother!
Thanks dave
Good review Ryan, I’ve had mine since April of this year and used it hard, the only issue I had was when the propel drive crank shaft bent , but that was 100% totally my fault and totally avoidable had I secured the kayak to the old flatbed trailer I was using that day. COVID made getting the replacement take a little longer than I would have liked but that’s not Native’s fault. I’ve peddled several other similar PDL ( prop type). Kayaks and really think this is the best ( disclaimer: I have not tried a Hobie ) Keep em coming.
Great overview and content. I just purchased my Slayer 12 max. Hoping to get the steering handle soon as well.
Thanks. I plan on getting out later this week hopefully. We shall see! I need to re-sort tackle. So many things to do! Glad you enjoyed the review and I really enjoy taking this kayak out! Hope you enjoy yours!
New sub here! I have the slayer 10 and I got that one for the purpose of it being light weight and easier to transport in my truck. My wife has the Titan 10.5 and there is a clear weight difference! We love native kayaks they make kayak fishing fun for sure!! Great vid bud!!
Thanks for subscribing! Yeah she’s a heavy girl (my kayak.... I still need to Name Her). I love the kayak and use it a lot. I hope to get it out this week but I’ve been working on a SUV so I’ve been too busy to fish out of my kayak. I can’t imagine car-topping this kayak all the time and I think you almost have to have a trailer and the sidekick
We had the same combination until they got stolen from our dock. I liked my Yaks better than the bass boat.
Thanks for pointing out the error that many have when complaining about the rudder and turn radius. There has to be water flowing by the rudder for it to work! That's why ships need a tug when docking.
Thanks! It’s basic propulsion in a boat. Remember when I was a kid driving my dads boat he would say “you have to give it some gas to make it turn” . Thanks for the kind comment!
Started with a feel free lure with overdrive. Terrible design. Got the Hobie Outback and sold it and got the Old Town PDL 120. Loved it but sold that too. Thinking of getting this. Thoughts? And do you like it better than the titan 12?
I’ve never used a Titan but for an angler I feel this kayak is a better layout and has some more features that I really like such as the battery compartment. It also has an improved rudder system. I’d recommend trying to setup a demo and try it on the water if you can! I live mine! Every kayak has good and bad qualities it’s just a matter of lining those up with what’s most important to you.
Cant wait to get mines in 2 days.
Hope you enjoy it! I had mine out today breaking through some thin ice like a baby titanic... but I didn’t sink! Lol
Hey big Joe thanks for the video I was looking at the hobie‘s and I came across your video. Recumbent cyclist have a bout five and I’m looking to get on the water. Naturally I’m looking for speed and stability. I’ll have to check the specs my guess is your boat is quite heavy. However I don’t think I’ll be in countering too many hills on the water lol. I’m not ready to buy yet however I would be interested in fresh and saltwater boat. Keep up the great work thanks for your video
It is a heavy boat for sure!
A pretty fair list. I learned quickly this summer that I really like left handed casting reels with this kayak as it allows for quicker steering adjustments, especially in steams and rivers.
The water on deck is the most annoying part of the kayak.
Yeah I appreciate it. I love the kayak and have gotten better at one handed reeling
The water on the deck is a sacrifice for the stability. It seems small but if they raised the deck even an inch it would greatly reduce the initial stability.
@@RhinoJoeOutdoors I think the water comes in over the propel drive hole and the scuppers they included with the kayak don't fit tight enough and leak like crazy.
@@BassManStrikes I have 2021 model Native Slayer Propel MAX 10. To me the real problem with water on the deck is, because the deck is BELOW the water line, if water comes onto deck (for stability I assume), water can NOT be self drained out, even if you unplug the scupper plug.

Sounds like your propel drive needs to be serviced that or the crank arm for the pedals are loose. My Slayer was squeaking when I was pedaling so I ordered the stuff from BerleyPro to properly service it after greasing the gears and tightening the pedals its completely silent again.
Yeah I need to tear it down and grease and tighten everything down
Luckily solved my issue with water getting in through the scupper plugs before it got too cold to go out with water in the kayak. If you push them in from the middle after they are in you can feel it sealing up and I haven't had issues with water since. I got a bilge pump and starting to not even bring it along.
That’s a good tip! Thanks for the comment
Hey Man really dig your videos and how real your reviews our. I own the slayer and am seeing how u can fix the water In the front with Scupper plugs.
Hey man thanks for tuning in. Other than keeping the scupper plugs in I see no real solution. It’s just kinda part of the kayak. The deck is so low that almost all of the time if you take out the scupper plugs you will have water in the deck area
Yes with the plugs out lots of water comes in. Lighter folks will get less because it won't sit as deep.
The problem is the scupper plugs are not tight enough and it will fill up with them in.
Mine are tight and i don’t get water around the plugs but I have heard that complaint.
@@RhinoJoeOutdoors I get 2 or 3 inches with all the plugs in and pushed in tight, going to try some aftermarket ones and see if that takes care of it.
That’s a lot of water! That would probably annoy me a bit
Great review 👍
Greatly appreciated! Figured I would do one since I’ve been on this kayak all season and have a good impression of the good and bad qualities of the kayak after so much use!
@@RhinoJoeOutdoors I don't think there is a perfect kayak I've got the Hobie compass and the Old Town predator I really like them both They perform well but I think that native Slayer Max you got pretty sweet also.
@@davidcrowson4745 yeah I mean the fin style drive does better in weeds but that’s about it. They are a major investment but hands free reverse is pretty awesome and useful!
@@RhinoJoeOutdoors absolutely!
@@davidcrowson4745 nothing beats being able to drink my coffee while trolling for crappie
PS- check out my propel drive maintenance video! That sound coming from my drive was my fault because I needed to tighten the pedal crank arms.
Love having a pedal drive and shout out to a subscriber that I met on the water! Jacob you rock and I like seeing you and your mom getting outside and doing awesome things!
PS- did you know over 91% of my viewers are not subscribed. If you enjoy my content I would ask you politely to please consider subscribing so I can continue to bring you great content.
What net do you use? Love my slayer max. I picked it up after wearing out my bonafide.
I actually made it from some different parts and made a video on how I did it Fishing Net DIY Everlast Floating Net Extended Handle for Kayak Fishing (like Greg Blanchards Net) is the video title if ya scroll through my videos
If you get one, make sure it has the Kevlar rudder cable upgrade. Once Native stepped up to the plate and replaced the ridiculous breaking steel cable, it is the best Kayak on the market with it's auto reverse. You just pedal backwards.
Yeah the old cable style was a huge issue! Very thankful mine has the Kevlar cable! Thanks for commenting
RhinoJoe can you keep your kayak going straight without adjusting steering? Cause on my slayer 12.5 max I have to constantly keep going left to right to keep going straight. I'm just wondering if mine has a defect.
So what I did was adjust the “preload” on my rudder. By that I mean the tightness of the top pulley cap on the actual rudder shaft. If yours is really loose you can get or make some felt “washers” to add to the shaft to give it more tension. Now that will place more stress on your steering handle and steering lines so you. Don’t want to overdo it. It will make it better. Let me know if you need any more help or questions.
@@RhinoJoeOutdoors Native has a washer that goes over the shaft and takes care of that issue along with water coming up through the steering scupper hole. I had to order the gasket it did not come with mine.

What cart system do you use? Also, do you use paddles for propulsion? Thanks
The cart is built into the kayak. It’s called a native sidekick. Kinda like the boonedox landing gear. I keep a paddle in the kayak but mainly use the pedal drive.
What are your thoughts on native titan 12? You probably considered that one as well. Do you think looking back you should have purchased the titan? Why/why not? Thanks.
I did consider that kayak. Personally I am glad I purchased the one I did. I like some of the new features built into the slayer max like the battery compartment. From what I am told the slayer max is a little faster also and I wouldn't want to be any less efficient when pedaling. They are both great kayaks though!
How much distance do you go before you are tired from pedaling? Trying to decide on something like this vs something you can rig a trolling motor on.
Depends on the day and the weather and type of water body you are on. The last trip I was on I did about 6 miles in distance covered. That was fishing from around 8am- 1:30pm.. fishing most of the time with short jaunts between spots.
You can add a trolling motor or torqueedo motor to this kayak also
@@RhinoJoeOutdoors Thanks for the reply. I am new to fishing kayaks and don't own one yet. I think I would definitely like the pedals for hands free fishing (and exercise) but the option as you said, to put a trolling motor on for longer distances. I'm excited to get one!
What battery are you using or what do you recommend. I don’t have any electronics on the kayak yet. I’m mostly fishing on the flats around Tampa Bay so a fish finder is not necessarily needed.
I have an amped outdoors battery and charger. Not sponsored by anyone BTW. Best priced and I bought a great charger with it that charges it in 4 hours or less. It powers my helix 10 mega si and I never have ran outta charge
@@RhinoJoeOutdoors thanks for the info. My only complaint is the squeaky seat - and I’m about to do the gorilla tape trick to fix that.
Yeah mine really hasn’t caused any issues for me but my old Jackson Kayak seat was worse so probably why I don’t really find it too concerning
I ended up not doing the gorilla tape trick but I did do a thin foam sheet wrap around the bars where the fabric comes in contact with the frame.
@@sharp4130 where did ya get the thin foam from? I might do that over the winter once it gets too cold
What is the best trailer to cart the native water 12 in kayak
I really would use the boonedox landing gear or something similar.
Is the rudder permanently mounted, or can it be removed for placing into water?
It’s permanently mounted. It is only one screw but I have a feeling if you consistently removed it there would be an increased likelihood it would fall off.
Does the will system interfere with fishing
Not at all. you can take them off and put them in your vehicle while you fish if you want.
For the price and what it offers ....worth the investment.
Absolutely! I’m glad with my investment. Thanks for tuning in
Off topic but was that a bird that seemed to fall out of the sky over his right shoulder at min mark 4:07? I'm assuming a duck or something.
OMG watched this several times and never noticed that 🤣
@RhinoJoeOutdoors it looked like an oak leaf but speed and sound of a spash was to say it wasn't a leaf. (My TV O were watching this video on isn't the greatest so left me know). I really enjoy and appreciate your videos. Good fishing!
What is the price?
$2,599 MSRP
How heavy is this Kayak?
Fully rigged is 125 (without any fishing gear)
Only really issue is the propel drive is terrible in any weeds at all, even just light weeds get wrapped and it loses thrust fast.
Yeah i dont fish many places with weed cover around here! I have encountered that problem also
✨✝️😇✝️✨
The pedal drive needs service.... That noise when you pedal is anoying ! lol
Yeah I did it a few weeks after I made this video!
