    The American health care system is insane... I'm Australian, I spent 2 weeks in hospital, was sent home with a months worth of medication, and was sent a bill a month later for $24 to cover the meds... and when I called to settle up the bill, they were like "oh you only have to pay for it if you can afford it"

      I’m an Aussie… My mother had a brain tumour in 2008.
      From getting diagnosed, numerous MRIs, neuro surgery, a week in the hospital, medication when she went home…. She paid a $35 co-pay for her initial GP appointment, and then left hospital with a bill for $126.
      She had surgery 3 weeks after the diagnosis. That was only because she had to have a crown replaced at the dentist and the dr agreed she should get it done before the surgery so they pushed it a week.
      Sometimes when I open my payslip I look at the amount of tax taken out and get annoyed. Then I remember my mum is alive and well, and my parents didn’t have to mortgage the house to cover the costs.
      The Aussie system has much room for improvement, especially for mental health and women’s health, but we a safety net and we are all better off because of it.

      I'm prone to injury and always keep a few essentials on me just in case. I've taken to wearing an allergy mask everywhere to avoid migraines (Vogmask doesn't really let smells into the mask), and it seems I'm getting sick less too. But it's hard. I grew up with pretty much yearly ear and foot infections (which is ironic because of the phrase "how're your feet and ears?"). It's so bad in North America. My neighbour here in Canada waited 10 about hours after having what they later determined to be a mini-stroke, and was told to just go home and come back the next morning. It's really bad, but at least insurance covers what I've needed, and some things are free. Then again, I was quoted 2-3 years to get allergy testing after mango made my throat and mouth swell up, so they just gave me something called Allerject (basically an EpiPen that has voiced instructions in it, cost me $20) just in case it happens again, and told me to avoid this long list of related fruit. I'm just glad I can afford physio every couple weeks, and usually seeing my GP is a month wait. Some of my friends who don't have GPs (5 year wait to get one) have to wait hours at a walk-in to get any sort of help, whether it's a med refill, a referral for a test, or advice on how to deal with something.

Luckily I could take my patient home that night. Looks like we'll be seeing at least two departments for outpatient follow up - but at least all I've had to pay for was some pain meds (~£10 per item) and parking at the hospital, and I'm so thankful I don't have to worry about how much it'll cost us.

A simple mistake or even the difference between a 60-day supply and a 90-day supply can make a single day go from the best to the worst. idk why but Zach's antics in the hospital just reminded me of being stuck in the psych ward. we literally walked back and forth for hours every day because we literally had nothing better to do and we were so bored.
    its really sad seeing what's supposed to help people and aid them in healing being put behind so many paywalls and just awful treatment of both the staff and the patients. I'm really glad you got through it Zach. infections are no joke and i imagine with being immunocompromised it can be even scarier.

    • @dualscreengrant
      @dualscreengrant Рік тому +7

      The psych ward is miserable. They gave me drugs that made me restless and unable to sit or lie down for long amounts of time. I had to cope by walking back and forth a lot. You can refuse to take the meds, or ask for different ones, but then they force you to stay there even longer. Even with insurance, the ambulance drive from the hospital to the psych ward is over $1,300. I made the wrong choice by going to the hospital in the first place, but that's what they told me to do when I called the suicide hotline. They can't efficiently or affordably help someone with a physical injury. They are a long way from being able to help someone with a mental illness.

    Zach really is such a great storyteller (so great that I even tolerate the handheld/shaky cam vlog shots 😂). He took a video that could've been a basic "storytime!" or "vlogging my hospital stay" thing and turned it into not just a full picture of what happened and what it felt like, but also a commentary on the American healthcare system AND a really poignant demonstration of the love and commitment and care that comes with being life partners with someone. His videos about chronic pain and the like have always been impactful, but this took it to a whole new level. Bravo and congratulations ❤

Turns out he's got a weird autoimmune blood disorder and we had to last minute ask everyone their vax status and uninvite a few people so they wouldn't accidentally unalive him while he was on MAJOR immunosuppressive meds. I was just gonna say though for future reference that someone who is autoimmune will not be protected almost at all by wearing a mask. Maggie is like the sweetest, kindest, most generous person on this planet♥I'd expect nothing less than your most loved one/spouse/fiancé/partner to stick by your side through times like this, but unfortunately for many people that's not the case and they aren't so lucky. Health complications can & will split people up pretty often, it's a huge stressor on a relationship, but if the 2 can get through it it truly brings you so much closer to know you can overcome huge hurdles together. Just completely warms my heart how attentive and caring she is. Also hearing Zack discuss the hospital overcrowding & red alert was just so sad...and knowing Maggie is one of those nurses who had to deal with the initial COVID outbreak and even the current hospital situations, she is just such an angel for that as well...I can only imagine how difficult that must be on someone and in my opinion she is such a trooper. So much love for her, and so much love for these 2 as a couple♥ Can't wait to see the rest!
