    Kind of surprised I didn’t hear any of y’all clock Korra’s faltering during her hallucination in her 1v1 with Kuvira for what it actually was. It was a trauma response. She didn’t actively decide to stop attacking, she was having a traumatic response and not thinking once she saw herself, it was much less about knowing what was right and wrong. She may have finally got 100% of the poison removed, but you have to remember that the last time she was in the Avatar state she was basically in the most feral survival mode of her life due to her body trying desperately to keep her alive against that poison. Her avatar state became her inner demon, and not solely because she still had poison in her for all that time, it was a mental block.

      Exactly! Korra's physical hindrance (the poison) may have been removed, but her mental block is not something that'll just be healed alongside the removal of the metal

    I think this is a great cross over between Korra’s ongoing healing from trauma which impacts her ability to perform at her “job” in the same way and her trying to incorporate what she has learned over the years. She was always a brash, rush to action, bang some skulls type avatar and we’ve seen her grow in to someone who tries to be more measured and balanced which Kuvira takes advantage of in this moment.

    I think it's important for Korra's journey and healing that she doesn't beat Kuvira with brute force. It's not just a matter of physical health, Korra's biggest enemy this season is her mental health. Her losing even when she has the Avatar state is crucial for her growth and realization that the Avatar isn't just a fighter but also a mediator

    I LOVED what Toph said about the past antagonists. This is literally what defines all of them: they all come from noble places but were completely out of balance. None of them were “evil“ per se.
    And that whole thing with Asami and her father was absolutely heart wrenching in my opinion.. very hard hitting. Haha and Varrick the LEGEND 😂🎉to be honest first time watching I never would've guessed Varrick and Zhu Li would have this huge relevance to the plot and get one of the best side plot lines of the season, for me personally at least 👀
    I just love that Korra is so different this season. Really shows her character development compared to season 1. Remember how hot-headed she was compared to now? She finally takes being the Avatar more serious in a way and acts way more calculated now. As of now it's standing in her way a bit but I really love this character development

    Episode 4 is one of my faves. I kinda really love how Toph spoke of all the past enemies. How looking at them a certain way you could sympathize and understand what they wanted. But they went too far into extreme territory and became fanatical. Really makes the morality grey for all. Some great lessons again. Episode 5 sees Korra returning to the world after 3 years gone essentially. She not only hasn't used her powers much, she also hasn't exercised her diplomacy and power of persuasion in a long time too. On the other side I love seeing Bolin get more use to lava bending. As for episode 6. I always saw Korra seeing herself in Kuvira as the fact that though she healed physically she still has PTSD. PTSD doesn't ever really go away, you learn to handle it with help. With Korra she was using her Avatar state for the first time since removing the metal, it can feel like bringing back the old fear from when she last used her Avatar state. Kuvira is a master manipulator, though I think Azula was better in her day. She knew how to say the right thing to get her way. Kuvira also is a master bender in her own right. Korra wasn't just dealing with an average punk. But it does feel like she isn't at 100% with her strength. She needed more time in personal recovery, especially directly after getting the last bit of poison out. But she doesn't have time. Also got to show love to Varrick being Varrick. He may be eccentric but he is a genius. Love his connection to Bolin.

  • @BlackGirlMarvel

    I want yall to remember Korra has been out of commission for 3yrs. The first year she was learning to walk again and the following years relearning everything she'd learned in her 17yrs of being Korra/the Avatar. That's not a small feat. And just when she's trying to come back everyone is relying on her to be who she used to be & she's no longer that person.
    So it's not only mental but its also physical as well. She's not as quick or forceful like she used to be. Add in the metal and mental block. It's a lot. So it's not just the poison, it's everything.
    Every enemy Korra has had has waged a physical war on her but moreso a spiritual one and we know the spiritual side is a difficult one for Korra. So she's been bested at a level she hasn't even mastered. So instead of running in and being a brute force Avatar (her past self), she's trying to rely on the spiritual side of herself which is gonna be difficult when she's dealing with someone who is just like she used to be, brute force.

    What I love about these episodes is that you can see that Su is still a spoiled child at her core. Everything has to go her way because she wants to. • @Mrryn
      @Mrryn 10 місяців тому +3

      I mean that's an oversimplification for sure. We even saw with Yi that if a city-state chooses not to join up, she just leaves, with the knowledge that the situation will get bad enough that her help will be called upon as it gets more desperate *because* no one else has stepped up as effectively. She knows the situation is dire and that's the reason why she despises Suyin so much for actively choosing to not step up - the kingdom is in shambles and disarray, with the commonfolk suffering at the hands of bandits and marauders. And the person with the greatest amount of resources, technology, and manpower is doing nothing to help. Especially when Zaofu* is also so protected, it never saw the chaos and destruction that the rest of the kingdom did, which just pushed Kuvira further (and clearly half of its people as well, since they all willingly followed Kuvira out).
      Hell, knowing her backstory later, the governor of Yi trying to twist her reasons for wanting Yi as only for its ore arguably pissed her off as much as it did because that isn't why she was there at all. She wants the entire empire to be pieced back together and brought not just under her control but to make sure no place or people is left behind...like she was. For the vast swathes of the Earth Kingdom after the queen's assassination, it's not that they never had a choice whether to submit to her: the choice was her regime taking control or continued chaos and upheaval.
      I'm sounding like a Kuvira stan but really, that's what makes her a fascinating villain. She is almost the cosmic answer and "necessary evil" to counter what the Red Lotus did in destabilizing the Earth Kingdom. And she is a broken person herself who had to piece herself back together with strength and conviction and self-assurance, which then leads to cold desperation and pushing further and further into a dark place not seeking personal glory but firm control of a situation using the only thing she knows: exerting her strength and force of will, and the self-confidence that she is in the right...just like early seasons Korra. Hers is the path to hell, paved with good intentions - excuses made for her increasingly harsh actions as "necessary for the big picture good" just stacking up on each other until she is literally using a Metal Gear to forcibly take Republic City as it was previously Earth Kingdom land...ironically the same thing the Earth Queen criticized her father for signing off on as part of a colonial crisis between himself and Zuko.

    Thats the trouble with authoritarians like kuvira, they push the right buttons to whip up a frenzy of loyalty among the diehard within their cult of personality while also playing the center just enough to keep the average people from believing it could really happen here no matter how many red flags pop up.
    Its a shame Kuvira only turns up in S4. Bringing her in earlier, even in the background of a reworked S2, as a side character and letting this build up over the prior two seasons would have made her an even stronger villain.

    • @rampantkitsune450
      @rampantkitsune450 10 місяців тому +1

      I think she had two appearances in the last season, I believe she was one of the characters practicing metal bending with the cables and metal 'flowers' when Korra first goes to Zaofu to recruit Opal as an airbender, probably one of the benders who tried to stop the attempt to abduct Korra then too, and Kuvira was one of the people who fought at the Air Temple to save the airbenders from the Red Lotus.

    • @BobTheSkull
      @BobTheSkull 10 місяців тому +1

      you are correct. it'd have been nice to see her a bit more in the front of season 3 instead of just the background. i think we never heard her name until the last episode but a couple of more obvious placements would have been good. one of those scenes are completely forgettable and the other one was kinda in your face. at least they semi set her up i guess. @@rampantkitsune450

    These episodes solidified to me that I really don't like Sui. She's done a lot of good yes and she's a good parent but she's not a good person.
    She never actually apologized to Lin for what she did. Yes they made up but there was never a "I'm sorry I scarred you for life and hurt your relationship with mom" said. But that's just a small frustration on my end.
    The main issue is in these episodes. She's told that the Earth Kingdom is in anarchy. People are rioting, stealing or destroying valuable historical goods, starving and crime is rampant.
    A council of the world leader tells her "We need someone of your pedigree and skills to help bring back peace and order to the Earth Kingdom. People are dying and suffering."
    And she rejects a job she's fully capable and fully able to do because it would be "wrong" to try and claim power. Like, Lady, you're not "claiming" power, you're not conquering a defenseless state and naming yourself Queen. You're asked to "take" up the mantle as a symbol of restoration, stop all the chaos that's happening and bring peace back to the innocent people of the Earth Kingdom.
    But she didn't. Because of some weird moral hangup that far as I can tell is irrelevant to what is going on.
    So instead Kuvira took up that mantle. She clearly would've been fine being the right hand to Sui as long as she actually tried to help bring back peace to the Earth Kingdom. But instead she had to do it, be corrupted by power and because she didn't have the pedigree and renown of a Beifong become a tyrant rather than unifier.
    I don't blame Kuvira for not wanting to hand the power back to Prince Wu after she spent three years building the Earth Kingdom back up from rubble. He'd probably have driven it to the ground through corrupt officials while he was busy hosting orgies.

    • @hellogoodbyeandallinbetween
      @hellogoodbyeandallinbetween 10 місяців тому +1

      That her actions were so predictable to Kuvira shows she never has changed either. It's just like S3 when she lies to Lin about keeping Korra in the city, then helps her run away behind Lin's back

    Out of all the villains of this show, kuvira irritated me the most. she was nothing but a wannabe dictator masking her hunger for power with a false sense of virtue and duty. Atleast ozai owned the fact that he was messed up. Also, the protagonists let her get away with way too much. Tenzin, lin or even suyin could have ended this in episode 3 the moment she refused to give up power. In my opinion they can all take her in a 1v1 fight.

    "she was just defending herself"
    echoing season 2, we have yet another military force trying to take over a sovereign nation and korra seeking to rationalize it...theyre at WAR, these are WAR tactics...these are some of my biggest issues with the writing of korra, its just not how any outside observer would see it, doubly so as the AVATAR

      Is Su's city a sovereign nation though? 20-30 years ago it was indisputably part of the Earth Kingdom so what gave Su the right to create her own city with herself as the top authority there? That, in and of itself, is a rich person just invading, taking control of part of a sovereign country, & deciding to keep it for herself. Like if Trump decided Mar-a-lago was its' own country that he was the only authority in, would we really argue if the U.S. military eventually tried to take it back from him? From Kuvira's perspective she's just taking the city back from a civilian who overstepped her authority in trying to permanently carve it out of the Earth Kingdom.

      @@6agenthawk Ok, but one leader being okay with it for whatever reason (I'm guessing Su kicking back $$$) doesn't somehow make it legitimately its' own country. If Ron DeSantis okay'd Trump to say Mar-a-lago was its' own separate country that doesn't actually make it so.
