    Medium format has a look to it... but what does that mean? Here's a basic explanation on the difference between medium format and full-frame cameras

    It's fun how a "medium" format is actualy not medium but the biggest

      Only on digital! Film negatives can get much much larger, and relative to those full frame (or 35mm) is actually relatively small.

      Ive always thought it was silly calling 35mm digital "full frame". 35mm film is tiny but became the standard. Maybe a better name for digital 35mm should have been "standard frame". Maybe they never envisioned MF digital? Regardless, Fuji MF is more like cropped MF but still superior to FF.

    Digital medium format cameras are just catching up to 120 medium format film in terms of sensor/film size. The larger sensor size obviously means larger lenses so what typically would be standard on full frame/35mm 35-50-85mm lenses would now be 60-80-150mm on medium format. On film there's different medium format sizes so an easier point of reference is to just refer the lenses as being twice the focal length of 35mm.
    As a film shooter the conversions kind of come naturally but I think that makes more sense than the way you explained it.

      I have yet to see a digital camera with a sensor size of 6mm in one dimension. But I do await the day when we can get a 6x6 or 6x7cm sensor.... at an affordable price.

    i mean, the medium format look is mostly just placebo effect, because at the end of the day depending on the lens and if you do the math, you can get an identical look on full frame or apsc, ie how an apsc at 32mm f1.4 is almost identical to a 50mm f2 on full frame. especially since a lot of medium format glass is slower than full frame or apsc glass because it has to cover a larger sensor

    • @LexanderMiller
      @LexanderMiller 5 місяців тому +2

      Mmm. I think the medium format “look” doesn’t quite agree with you. Sure the math can match, but what is true is that you’re getting the same frame filled, but with the subject closer which results in a unique distortion only medium (or full frame or APSC)

    • @Shellvedge
      @Shellvedge 5 місяців тому +4

      @@LexanderMillergreat call out. It’s odd to hear the laws of physics being called a placebo. Of course you can recreate a look by compensating for a smaller sensor by increasing the focal length, moving the distance relationship between subjects but ultimately a focal length is a focal length. The compression and distortion factors cannot be manipulated. You can create an image with a comparable look, but ultimately some of the most critical aspects to the composition cannot be compensated for.

      There is a medium format look, the wider field of view and shallower depth of field compared to similar focal length full frame DSLR and Mirrorless lens . I own all three systems Nikon D5, Z8, and Hasselblad H6D-100C. The Hasselblad images look differently than the others; color gradation, subject shape is more dimensional, dynamic range.
      Medium format systems are not aimed at full frame shooters and the designs of the Phase Ones and Big Hasselblads reflect that. It is not for the masses and they don’t try to be. It is pointless to compare. Two different systems with different use case designs

    If the performance of the sensor is similar to FX30 with 12MP and with a wide aperture lens of 1.2 that camera would turn into night vision

    The comparison of 50 mm on medium and fullframe is completely irrelevant. In general you would never compare a specific focal length across any two formats. To compare - across - you should multiply both focal length and apparture and then the depth of field is the same. There may be other qualities that change - but those mentioned in this video do not.

    as s pro who has shot everythung under the sun for 30 years: Its meaningless in terms of bokeh and dof. You can get mostly the same "look" with FF and modern fast glass. Its more a question of easier workflow and better IQ out of the box without a lot of tinkering (think phase one). These days I mainly shoot real medium format and large format where the combination of fast glass and actual film gives you a truely unique look out of the box.

    Lens compression on wider field of views is the medium format look

  • @QuicknStraight
    @QuicknStraight Місяць тому

    Nonsense, really. The image sensor simply records light digitally. It does nothing without an image processor. The "look" of a photo depends on the way the image sensor processes the data from the sensor. Stuff like FOV, sharpness, etc., is entirely lens-dependent. And, obviously, the skill of the photographer.

    @lucianoag999 5 місяців тому +3

    To clarify, the sensor size does not determine depth of field (DoF), only the physical aperture, the distance of the object, the focal length and the circle of confusion (CoC). One could argue smaller sensors have higher pixel density, smaller pixels and thus smaller CoC resulting in shallower DoF.
    The myth arises from the fact that having a lager sensor means you need either a longer focal length to have the same angle of view and that’s what gives you directly the shallower DoF.
    On the other hand, once the sensor becomes larger, the distance from the lens are different and that might lead to different focal planes at the edges. Ideally the sensor should be curved.

    For me the “3D” feel that this câmera do for portraits and stuff comes to a wider range combined with longer lenses compression. An 50mm lens will keep the proportion of your subject while extending the frame.

    The same field of view and depth of field can be acheeved with full frame and APS-C. The difference is in the color depth and optimal image quality. Medium format camera has deeper colors and less noise at base ISO when compared with full frame abd APS-C. But it's hard to see the difference without pixel peeping, so it's mostly placebo effect.

  • @somebodypeculiar
    @somebodypeculiar 5 місяців тому

    What a terrible explanation. There are two things people need to understand. One, the sensor is larger, so they can have more pixels, though the actual number depends on the specific sensor and what you compare it too. Second, everything you knew about focal length vs field of view has to be adjusted; just as your old lenses won't fit, the lenses that do fit will not give you what you were used to getting.

  • @iamtesting3824
    @iamtesting3824 5 місяців тому

    Larger sensor means dynamic range etc but not perspective.
    50mm is 50mm regardless.
