Thank you so much Martin. We love living here and Danes have so much to be proud of, Denmark is a wonderful country. We are incredibly happy here and, of course, we miss our family and friends sometimes but Denmark really feels like our second home.
Yes, this is one of the biggest things that we learned from this video - the fact that we were explaining it wrong (and probably because we were thinking of it from the American perspective). In the States it's all one age limit for all - buying, drinking, or even just being in possession of any type of alcohol is 21+ (which seems crazy). Thanks for helping us to understand it better 😀
@@RobeTrotting you may not have notist any ID check from bying alcolhol. I'm a 1.52m (high/...low) girl..i was 28 the first time i mannage to by a beer (to my husband accualy) whithout any iD recuest. That's in jutland, where the drinking habbit is said to be more libreal. :-) Once, i was forced to bike 2km home from the lokal store to get ID, because i was trying to by a light beer for my granddad. :-D
@@geromehomie692 No, you can buy at 16 and 18, but it is by no means illigal to drink earlier than that, and you can drink openly on the streets. Denmark is one of the only countries in the world that allow that, as far as i know.
@@geromehomie692, you can buy beer and things with similar alcohol amount at 16. To buy liquor you have to be 18. To get served alcohol you have to be 18, but your parents are free to buy you alcohol earlier at resturants ect.
I’m an American whose father was born and raised in Denmark. He’s gone now but my family keeps many of the traditions (like strings of Danish flags on trees) alive. And while I speak three languages, I’ve tried Danish and it is the absolute most difficult one for me to pronounce the words. I’m so bad I end up laughing at myself! Keep up these great videos, guys. And good luck speaking the language!
I love that you guys stuck to the facts. Often non-danes usualy get a lot of facts wrong, because they asume this or that. Great video, keep up the good work. 🤘
Thanks for adding a few more to the list, we plan to do a much longer and more detailed list of famous Danes, especially because of all the great suggestions we received as additional people to highlight :)
@@RobeTrotting And since you mentioned scientist Niels Bohr, it is worth mentioning that Tycho Brahe, the first astronomer to discover a supernova, was also, in fact, Danish.
@@RobeTrotting Also, interestingly, although the actor Viggo Mortensen (of LOTR fame) was born in the US, he does consider himself a Dane as well (as does every other Dane), and he holds Danish Citizenship.
It's always nice to see more of the world embracing the culture of our tiny nation. My wife is American too, and even though she misses a lot of things from Florida, she still keeps discovering new things to love here. Cheers from Fyn, and hope that you guys will swing by our island at some point.
Fun Fact. regarding H.C Andersens fairytales, they are (or at least used to be) the only fairytale writer from europe acknowledged by the CCP in China and used to be mandatory reading in their schools, making his fairytales by far the most known in the world, purely because 1 billion chinese have read his fairytales :) The little mermaid is so famous there, that China rented her for about half a year, and transported the statue to china and back like 10 years ago.
WOW, that's really cool to learn! H.C. Andersen was early to break into the world's largest market haha. Very cool to have that kind of cultural exchange including the little mermaid statue - so random but so cool! :)
@@RobeTrotting Very random indeed, but isnt most fun facts about Denmark rather random in the end? :D Like the Danish-Canadian war over Hans island off the coast of north-west greenland, its been called the worlds most polite war and is basically an exchange of hard alcohol, flags and greetings on a small rock in a sea of ice :) And the lengend about how we got our flag, it coudlnt be anymore random that it supposedly fell from heaven during our Baltic crusade more than 800 years ago and that we still use that flag. Theres soo many of these weird facts, even Danes have a hard time rembering most of them, but some of them bring amazement or a smile, maybe its just how us danes are build :)
@@RobeTrotting While H.C. Andersen was the first and largest influencer we must not forget Danish Victor Borge and how he exported early stand up entertainment to America in the 50s and onwards. For example, look up Victor Borge and how he teaches Dean Martin his Phonetic Punctuation language in prime time television - it is hilarious!
I am Danish, I have never been offended by anyone mispronouncing words here and I don't understand why anyone does. Danish is a simple language in its written form, but one of the hardest languages in the world to speak because of how difficult the words are to pronounce. Anyway; I live just north of Copenhagen feel free to DM me if you need any advice or help from a local. I am sure I speak for everyone when I say; we are glad you choose Denmark as your new home and all want you to be happy here.
Regarding the flag, I think it's worth mentioning that we have "flag days". For instance, if it's the queen's birthday, the whole country puts out flags by the streets or on busses. It's a national celebration. 🇩🇰🇩🇰
and you're not allowed to keep the flag up whenever you feel like it. The flag may only be up between sunrise and sunset on special occasions, like birthdays and other celebrations. During funerals and times of mourning the flag is flown on half mast, but first it is raised to the top to honour the flag and then lowered to the halfway point - no matter how tall your flagpole or mast is. If you want to fly flags from other countries you must always have Dannebrog in a more prominent position, this means Dannebrog must be on a taller flagpole, or if all your flagpoles are the same height, then the Dannebrog must be bigger than the other flags. Cutting up a Dannebrog flag (like to turn it into clothing), or otherwise deliberately damaging it in anyway (like setting it on fire or putting holes in it) is blasphemous and equivalent to treason. These rules are all set in law - it's literally called the flag law - and thus you can be fined (which has happened) if you don't treat the flag with proper respect.
And we have Flagsdays on, Valdemar day, and Pinse and Easter as well. And not at least for our Soldiers, both the Falling once and them whom come back home. We can put up the flag from sunrise to sunset🇩🇰
Yes, it's really interesting that Møllehøj is actually a bit higher, but they didn't find that out until the mid-1800s. Himmelbjerget is still a much steeper drop from the hilltop to Lake Julsø (121 m) 😀
@@RobeTrotting Just had to look it up, we are talking 9 cm in difference from the highest to the second highest, and then 42 cm for the third highest. Knew it was close but not that close :D
@@RobeTrotting Both Yding Skovhøj and Ejer Bavnehøj (the second- and third-highest points) are about 23 m higher than Himmelbjerget, though, so even though it’s close at the top, Himmelbjerget is seriously lagging behind.
Our pleasure, and we're so glad you liked the video! We were really intrigued to learn of that origin as well, it's really interesting how a natural spring evolved into the present-day Bakken 😀
Subscriber 66 here! My mind was blown! What a nice review of Denmark in only 13 minutes. The history was interesting and the sights were lovely. I think this is my favorite yet.
Roger wilco 66! We figured you would especially enjoy the history - there is so much fascinating stuff to share, and we will get to show more once museums and other cultural spots open again.
I would love to live in Denmark, they have so much pride in their country, how can you be proud when your queen has supported and enabled Andrew for years.
Moved to Denmark in 1983 from Luxembourg, Came to Luxembourg in 1980 from Oakland Calif (US Expat) and never returned to the USA. (self employed Artist) Nice rundown of some of the facts. Need to mention that Denmark is one of the safest crime wise places in the Western World . Ten thousand times safer than Oakland where I grew up and lived a good portion of my life. Keep on Truck'un
Amazing fact about our Queen. She's an amazing artist, and she made Illustrations from scenes from The Lord of the Rings which Tolkien was very impressed and fascinated by to the point that they were used for the first edition of The Lord of the Rings in Danish which was released back in 1977. To this day, she still designs her own clothes, and she created dresses and scenery for the 2009 movie adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s Wild Swans. She's also a pretty stellar painter who occasionally exhibits work at major galleries. I'm proud to have her as our Queen!
Just stumbled upon your videos and thoroughly enjoying them. I’m a Dane in England about to move back to the mother country after 10 years here in the UK. I have enjoyed my time here but Denmark has always been my “home”. An idea for your channel: touring cities across the country, for example Aarhus which has been dubbed the most cultural danish city several times.
The bicycle initiative from Copenhagen is actually getting expanded in Jutland this year. Also notable Danes are Aragon from The Lord of the Rings (Viggo Mortensen) and Hannibal Lector (Mads Mikkelsen)
Oh fantastic! When we travel to Jutland we will bring our bikes! And fun fact, Viggo Mortensen was actually born in the US (about 90 minutes from Mike's home town!)
you forgotte the best fact. my girlfriend is fascinated that we in denmark will make a human shaped cake for birthdays. well it is more the fact that we will cut the head off and scream as we do it. it never get old, cake, candy and screaming children
I attended a birthday party for a young relative of mine, who tragically had been bullied into a suicide attempt by hanging. I was informed of this fact beforehand, and told not to bring it up. You could still see the mark on his neck, but we all kept quiet. So there I was, and they bring out the cakeman as we call it. And I ask them if we're gonna do the screaming thing, and I'm shocked to hear nobody ever heard of this tradition. But I talked them into it, and it was very half hearted. My dumb ass did not realize how poor taste that was at the occasion until months later. Though I think the kid enjoyed it. He's more than fine now, by the way.
As someone who tasted a lot of different cakes over the years, I must say that the Danish kids are getting a raw deal. While the Kagemand is fun and all, it's usually quite bland and meh compared to the cakes most other people eat on birthdays.
Great video guys, very well done. I see other proud Danes in the comments here as well :) A suggestion could be to do one on (the history of) Danish architecture and design. Plenty to see and learn about and when they reopen, you have excuses to visit Louisiana, Arken, Den Blå Planet, Design Museum Denmark and much much more.
Great suggestion! We love the architecture here and it's world-famous. We have a few architects in our network that would likely be willing to tag along and share their expertise. Thank you for the awesome idea! 😀
thank you so much for this :D as a dane i actually learned a bit myself lol if you ever get the chance to visit Odense and make a part 2 there is so much history about the city and so many things to see. :) and i really like your content!!
You guys should make a little getaway soon as the lockdown is totally lifted to Sønderborg. It has some neat history and your viewers could learn a bit about south jutland culture.
I live in Sønderborg and sadly the lockdown is not totally lifted and many things are still closed. But it is still a great place and people try to have as much social life as is both safe and possible :-)
Fun fact about Prince Frederik: He is trained by the special unit called "Frømandskorpset". An elite military unit mostly taking care of mission involving the water, the name roughly translates to " The Frogmencorp". In other words, Frederik is a badass!
Yes, we found that out too. We are adding a full royal family video to our queue because there is so much more detail we want to get into. Not many countries have such a badass prince! We were just impressed by the Royal Run for his birthday but Frømandskorpset training is a mind-blowing fact for sure!
@N B He really is; remember when he decided to walk the Sirus patrol, for the Hell of it? You know just casually strolled 2795 km in the Arctic during winter. Oh or that time he ran the Royal Run with a hernia, at age 50? Badass indeed.
Not to mention his wilder, adventurous youth. Dodging and sneaking past his security detail time and time again, for the heck of it - and to have fun as a "normal" citizen. He was a rebel and a heartthrob.
@@ohnomygoogleaccount547 No, just like the brothers Grimm all the fairy tales were meant only for adults as a form of entertainment. It was either that, singing or dancing to music
I love you guys so much! I'm from South Africa. I'm really thinking about working and living in Denmark. So your videos have been very useful. Not to be too invasive, but would you be interested in doing a video tour of your apartment? I'd just like to see what the living arrangements are like. Are the kitchens big? What is the bathroom situation? Are there communal swimming pools? Things like that. Thank you!
Hi Charne! Thank you watching and leaving such a sweet comment. We hope you do make your way to Denmark and love living here as much as we do. If you didn’t find it yet, we do have an apartment tour video: ua-cam.com/video/wkTVIAqkHQk/v-deo.html Don’t be too scared of the smaller bathrooms and kitchens though 😃
Hi i am from Denmark and i can say that it is very different. Some people have big kitchens other has small. Evertything is very different from place to place.
Ahh, you make me miss Denmark! As a Dane, who have not actually lived in Denmark for the past many years, this video makes me homesick but in the best way possible :D
Yes, great mention. We did hear that, but forgot to include it. When Tivoli reopens we will definitely make another video inside and mention this part of the history 😀
I just want to say that I find your channel very helpful and informative. My wife and family will be taking in a foreign exchange student this fall from Denmark and we could not be more excited. She is from Aarus, and will be living with use her in Minnesota for 10 months. We could not be more excited to have her!
Don't forget Mads Mikkelsen, is danish too, and Scarlett Johannson and Viggo Mortensen both got danish citizenships because their parents were danes :)
Yes! Great additions all around 😀 We are going to create another video specifically on the topic of famous Danes, so these names are all helpful and will get properly highlighted for sure.
I got to say it is amazing watching your videos! My girlfriend moved to denmark 2 years ago and your videos have been a great tool for us :) not just for her to know denmark but for me to know what things denmark does differently so that we could prepare her for it better! Btw you are a super cute couple!
Haha, yes - as it's getting nicer and we're filming outside we ordered some better microphone covers. Sorry for the non-optimal audio when we were on Amagerstrand.
12:06 Hmm... I've walked passed that place many times. I didn't know Centralhjørnet was the worlds oldest gay bar. During Christmas time I often think to myself "I really got to grab a beer in there some day". Looking from the outside they have the most crazy over the top Christmas decoration. Looks like a fun place. Maybe 2021 will be the year?
Their Christmas decorations are INSANE - they do such an incredible job. In fact, they actually do very over the top decorations for Easter and the summer months too. It's a very cozy and laid back bar, we really like taking friends there because it still feels very authentic even though it's in the city center - you should definitely stop in 😀
@@RobeTrotting There is ofc. "Egeskov" its a castle near "Ringe" here on "Fyn" - Sorry to make the " " marks, its just my brain that tells me its easy'er for you to see the prober names and stuff :P Love your video, cant wait to see more!
Hi guys - love the video. Now, here is another interesting fact about Denmark that you may add in the future: There is clean drinking water in every water tap in Denmark! Most countries in the world does not have that, not even in the EU. As you know, in America they add Chlorine to the water which is an awful thing to do seen from a Danes perspective.
Thank you, Martin. We're so glad you enjoyed the video :) We knew that the water quality in Denmark was great (even though it's a little chalky in Copenhagen). That's super interesting, and amazing, that it's safe from every tap in the country. It makes sense with how much Denmark invests in all types of infrastructure. Sadly, America could learn a bit from Denmark in that regard - it's hard to believe some cities in the USA have poor or unsafe water quality.
@@RobeTrotting Keep up the good work. Yes, how much chalk is in the water determines to which degree the water is "hard" or "soft". Either way, it is 100% safe to drink tap water everywhere in DK. Access to clean water is important for good health. Rumour is that the lethal water situation in Flint is happening in thousands of cities in America - that is a real tragedy. That is what happens when you do not pay nor invest taxes in infrastructure :(
@@_-martin-_ Thank you so much, and we will keep the videos coming :) The only places we really notice the hard water is the shower of course, and in our drinks after an ice cube from the tap water melts haha. Flint is such a sad story because it didn't have to happen that way and it's being repeated all over the country. We really prefer the Danish system for the overall feeling of community, empathy, and a collective society. I couldn't imagine a city in DK having unsafe water without massive outrage.
@@RobeTrotting True, it would never happen that way in Denmark for many reasons, including regulation and the fact it would be considered a public disaster. Clearly, with proper regulation the Flint event could have been avoided. I feel very empathetic to the American people and what happened in Flint really pisses me off. Especially when president Obama visited Flint and asked for a glass of water and took a zip of the water and basically said everything is fine and they should stop worrying. Meanwhile kids are being brain damaged by lead poisoning and folks are dying by increased cancer rates. That is just outright irresponsible! Sorry, I'll calm down now.
@@_-martin-_ No need to calm down, it's a complete outrage - we totally agree with you. America is much better than that and it's sad to say, but politically there's almost no way out. There's so much dirty money in the political system that it would be considered corrupt if it weren't (unfortunately) perfectly legal. The interest of the people is rarely the first concern of our politicians. No country's system is perfect, but Flint is something that shouldn't happen in a "rich country".
Hi! Love your videos! Videos about your favourite places in Denmark? Really thinking about moving to Denmark with my husband (and dogs) . We're portuguese that used to live in London . We would to connect. Keep up your amazing Channel!!🌸
Thank you so much Ingrid, we really love hearing that. We can definitely work on a video of our favorite places. Moving to Denmark was one of the best decisions we ever made, so I really hope you get to do the same. You will love it here, it's much more charming than London (although we love it there too) 😀

If I remember correctly, the Queen of Denmark also drew illustrations for The Lord of the Rings in 1977, she sent those to the writer who liked them a lot, which later lead to the Danish version of the book.
Hej Alex, you're spot on! We actually learned that from this video in the comments and included it in another video of the Danish Royal family: ua-cam.com/video/Ps4XfO241Lk/v-deo.html
And a lot of the names Tolkien Got from places in Denmark. Isegård = Isengaard, Hjelm Dyb = Helms Deep. Tolkien and Queen Magrethe II wrote many letters back and forth.
Nice video. I remember living in Texas in the late eighties and seeing news about the first same-sex unions in Denmark on TV. It is one of the only times I have ever felt real pride in my country. That was a day, where being Danish meant that you could hold your head high.
Thank you! It's a great story, and it is so great that it is a point of pride for Denmark. I don't know if you have seen the exhibit on Axel and Eigil in the National Museum but it is very cool.
So basically this video was a lot of facts about Copenhagen and 4 or 5 about Denmark. I would love to show you guys the other side of Denmark, which not many know about and its history. This is also why my bf and I want to start our own channel and show people, there is more to Denmark than just Copenhagen. :) Loved the video, and I want to see more.
If you want to see another side of denmark I can recommend visiting vejle. Vejle is about 2.5 hours from Copenhagen but holds the title of the best and prettiest shopping town in Denmark. Vejle also known for the iconic building "the wave" Which is a "must see" if you visit. 👍😁
Great suggestion! We had heard of "the wave" but didn't have Vejle on our list - we have a growing queue of towns and cities to visit so thank you for adding to it. We will definitely be adding new videos of these destinations in the coming months 😀
Not to forget that Volbeat is an international rock band from Denmark, not many do know that though. 😊 And Mads Mikkelsen who has stared in international movies. That include the star wars rogue one! And he did a pretty good job 🥳. I am Danish and I knew our amusement parks were old, I did not know that they were that old 🤦♀️.
We are so glad you liked the video. We're planning to make a full video on famous Danes (because we had so many awesome additions in the comments) so we'll be sure to include Mads Mikkelsen in a future, follow up video 😀🇩🇰
12:30 correction we have no “drinking age” just a “buying age”. Technically you can drink from you’re born, that’s obviously a REALLY bad idea, an may be classified as child endangerment, but my point still stands. For example I’ve been offered wine at my grandparents house since I was at least 13. You have to be 16 to buy alcohol with a percentage up until 16.5%, anything over that and you have to be 18. Great video guys👍🏻
as a swede, not from skåne, there are good things with Danmark, Beautiful girls, Aalborg aquavit, Smörebrö, Lager (beer) and Göl salami. On the down side we have danes, dannish and all the wars we had to do with them... ps if possible this year i'll will be takeing my yearly trip to the red and whites, damn covid stopped that last year.ds ps2 love the extension of swedish lands. ds2 ;) :P
Thanks for adding your thoughts - one thing that we never realized until living in DK is how often Denmark and Sweden went to war with one another! It's super interesting to read up on, but now I guess it's settled over handball 😉 We can't wait to visit Sweden again after the Covid mess is over.
There is a statue of Holger Danske in the dungeons of Kronborg Castle. A great Viking that is said to rise from the grave and help with the fighting if Denmark ever comes in troubles. Didn't happen in WW2, but maybe next time? ;) It is a really cool statue of a badass viking though. He just sits there sleeping, with his long beard, shield and sword.
Actually there was a resistance group during WWII called Holger Danske. The real Holger danske was a son of the danish king Godfred (died 812) in service of Charlemagne and mentioned in the song of Roland.
Danish scientists have been heavily involved in shaping modern western society the way it is. Both with our progressive mindset (which isn't just a Danish virtue, our Scandinavian neighbours are as progressive in as many ways as we are). You've already mentioned some of our most important philosophers and poets/writers as well as perhaps the most well known scientist (Niels Bohr). But did you know that Blutooth is also a danish invention? And I think you failed to mention Arne Jakobsen the world famous designer. Oh yeah, this is a bit of a weird one. Jacob August Riis, a journalist, reformator, photographer and lecturer. A dane who journeyed to the US and became a citizen there. He died there in 1914 and his death drew a lot of headlines in the US newspapers because he was the man that Theodore Roosewelt had described as the ideal American.
We actually have a video coming out in the next week about Jelling, the Jelling Stones and Harald Bluetooth. The invention, however, is not Danish - only the name. We learned it was Ericsson Mobile (Swedish) who invented it and used the name because their original name (PAN) was too difficult to copyright. They built on technology developed by the Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr, who laid the groundwork for wifi and Bluetooth (she worked on spread spectrum radio technology that the US navy adopted in WWII).
Welcome aboard and thank you so much, that's quite a compliment. Hopefully, we'll keep growing, and thank you for subscribing. We'll keep the videos coming 😀
Hi guys, get out of Copenhagen at visit the islands to , there you will learn so much more about Denmark 🇩🇰 By the way, regardless where you are in Denmark, we all have a bicycle 🚲 it’s something we have been raised with, and all city’s across Denmark, are designed for cycling 😉 Come to Odense, and learn so much more 😉❤️
Yes, we are a little embarrassed by how long it took us to begin exploring more of Denmark. We actually just spent the weekend in Kerteminde on Fyn, so we will be creating a video on the trip soon 😀 The bike culture here is just incredible, and we love how much it's a part of life (all over Denmark 😉). It's something more countries could learn from.

It's really interesting hearing about Denmark from outsiders perspective. I actually learned something new. Hmm wienerbrød is Austrian? That explains the w.. thank you guys.
Thank you for watching Gitte, we'll keep the videos coming. The wienerbrød story was one of our biggest surprises too. We really love living here and sharing our experiences here, it's always cool to see how outsiders view things.
The story i have heard is that when those bakers from Vienna arrived here, they found the danish flour so different from what they were used to, that they had to make some substantial changes to the recipe, but the result became an instant hit among the danish people. And apparently many foreigners too! :D
It's so funny to hear the way you pronounce the Danish words when i come from Denmark You should try to say "Rød grød med fløde" It's always what we make people from other contries say in danish because it's so hard for them😂
Julefrokost (especially work julefrokost) is also a pretty original concept. I am Canadian and lived in CPH for 4 years. The first Christmas I was there the "what happens at Julefrokost, stays at Julefrokost" was an eye-opener ;) Mange tak for de sjove videoer!
Hi guys - as a dane I enjoyed the video 👏 I’m so glad you like living here. Regarding same sex marriages did you know that former American ambassador Rufus Gifford got married to his now husband here?
Thank you Anni, we are so glad you enjoyed the video and that you can tell how much we love living in Denmark. We did know about Rufus before we moved here and have followed him since we arrived. He actually had a reality show based on his time as ambassador which we watched when we knew we would be moving to Denmark. It was an interesting way to learn a bit about life here before we moved 😀

Here's a suggestion for you, if you haven't done it yet: Visit Fredericia on July 5th and 6th. These two dates are of huge historical significance, and are actually celebrated in Fredericia with parades, music, festivals and all kinds of cool stuff. So why are those dates so important? In 1849, Denmark was at war with the Prussians, and Fredericia was actually under siege by the Prussians. But on the night of July 5th to July 6th, the Norwegian General Olaf Rye led a charge against the Prussians, and won, even though he fell during that battle. The Danish army managed to push back the Prussians, and eventually turned the war around. This was, by the way, the first time in history that a besieged army ever managed to push back and win against the enemy besieging them. So you can probably understand why Fredericia makes such a huge deal out of July 5th and July 6th, even now, 170 years later. It's not something a lot of people outside of Fredericia even know about today, and even in Fredericia, most people don't actually know why we celebrate those days... But you guys seem to be very open-minded and interested in learning about Danish culture and history, so I would definitely recommend you visit Fredericia on those days, if you ever get the chance, and maybe talk to some of the history-experts at the place 😊 Also, another related fun-fact: One of Fredericia's most iconic landmarks is called "Landsoldaten", which is a statue of a soldier from the war of 1849, standing with one foot on a small cannon, holding an olive-branch in his right hand above his head. But here's the kicker - Nobody knows who the soldier is. It's supposedly the first known statue in the world of a nameless soldier, rather than a prominent figure like a general or a king. Which in itself is kinda interesting. And yes, I'm originally from Fredericia myself, so I may be a little biased, but I just really think it's a shame that so few people actually know about these events.
Interesting fact Hans Christian Andersen actually wrote The Little Mermaid in 1837 as a love letter for a man named Edvard Collin. Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid upon the news of Collin's marriage. The original story is more of a tragedy than a romance: Here is the mermaid, longing for a life in the sun, but forever trapped in the murky depths of the sea.
Welcome! It's got to be a tough time to move abroad but lets hope things improve over the spring and summer and you can get adjusted. Copenhagen is a wonderful city to call home! Is there anything you'd like to see us cover in future videos that would help you?
Thank you so much for the response... such a sweet gesture 🤍. It’s been a little tough but so far we have loved the city and exploring it little at a time. Thank you for asking, I actually do not have anything specific but would love to see more of your videos ... the vibe is great 😇😇 and I can literally feel it through my phone screen.
Wonderful video. Cool thing that you plan to see more of the realm. Since Copenhagen is the least Danish place in Denmark. With it been so international. Which is also cool.😀 Plus there is a lot of great local beers around. Cheers from Tylstrup. Vendsyssel. Skål.

Lesser known fact: Denmark was the first country to legalize sale of pornography. Near the Danish-German border there is/was a ridiculous concentration of sex shops because Germany was slower to legalize sale of pornographic content.
Oh very cool addition. We actually knew about the pornography legalization but didn't realize the part about the sex shops in southern Jutland - that's so interesting 😀

Hey!! You forgot about Mads Mikkelsen and Lukas Graham😂 I really enjoyed this little “tour” as most danes (including myself) often dont think much about how interesting our history and culture is, unless you do a bit of digging. Its like seeing my country from the outside, and it makes me a little extra proud of my roots. Nice production value and lovely way of presenting the facts, as you’re literally standing in the middle of it and not just in an anonymous studio ❤️🇩🇰

Another fun fact is that Denmark has the second highest non-affiliated/atheistic percentage of the total population. Discussions could be made, that this fact is one of the reasons towards our well-being.
Yes, super fascinating to compare to the USA for example where there’s no mix of state and religion BUT politics has been dominated by religion for decades.
@@RobeTrotting Yeah that’s true, especially when we associate religions with the following problems such as: conflict with science, curtailing freedoms, delusion, claims of having the exclusive truth, fear of punishment, feeling guilt, immutability, instilling fear, etc. I personally think that a corrollation between politics and religion is a rather “bad” thing, taking into consideration of it expressing solely one mainstream religion and oppressing the rest - so much for being a “free” country afterall, right…?
The water in central Copenhagen used to be so dangerous that all the springs were covered and locked. Everybody - kids included - drank beer and snaps, although much weaker than today. See The Insight Guide to Denmark, Danish Beer Culture…

there is no age limit for drinking alcohol in denmark. The age limit is only for buying it :)

@@geromehomie692 No, you can buy at 16 and 18, but it is by no means illigal to drink earlier than that, and you can drink openly on the streets. Denmark is one of the only countries in the world that allow that, as far as i know.

People should always be applauded, never criticized or ridiculed, when making an effort to pronounce words and names in a foreign language.
when you listed famous danes it could be worth mentioning that Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich is danish, as well as the band Volbeat, and Lukas Graham

Fun Fact. regarding H.C Andersens fairytales, they are (or at least used to be) the only fairytale writer from europe acknowledged by the CCP in China and used to be mandatory reading in their schools, making his fairytales by far the most known in the world, purely because 1 billion chinese have read his fairytales :) The little mermaid is so famous there, that China rented her for about half a year, and transported the statue to china and back like 10 years ago.
I'ma dane, who did not know that himmelbjerget, wasn't the highest place in denmark, Guess ones gotta learn as long as one does live :)

The bicycle initiative from Copenhagen is actually getting expanded in Jutland this year.
Also notable Danes are Aragon from The Lord of the Rings (Viggo Mortensen) and Hannibal Lector (Mads Mikkelsen)

you forgotte the best fact. my girlfriend is fascinated that we in denmark will make a human shaped cake for birthdays. well it is more the fact that we will cut the head off and scream as we do it. it never get old, cake, candy and screaming children
Yes, this is so interesting. We have a big round birthday this year so we'll be excited for the tradition 😀😂
We used to stab it in the heart, which was a red gummy
As someone who tasted a lot of different cakes over the years, I must say that the Danish kids are getting a raw deal. While the Kagemand is fun and all, it's usually quite bland and meh compared to the cakes most other people eat on birthdays.
Omg I hated that! 😂 my mom was always the one to scream loudest, and I was so embarrassed 🤦🏻♀️

We're so glad you enjoyed the video :)
We knew that the water quality in Denmark was great (even though it's a little chalky in Copenhagen).
That is what happens when you do not pay nor invest taxes in infrastructure :(
@@_-martin-_ Thank you so much, and we will keep the videos coming :)
The only places we really notice the hard water is the shower of course, and in our drinks after an ice cube from the tap water melts haha.

12:30 correction we have no “drinking age” just a “buying age”. Technically you can drink from you’re born, that’s obviously a REALLY bad idea, an may be classified as child endangerment, but my point still stands. Thanks for adding your thoughts - one thing that we never realized until living in DK is how often Denmark and Sweden went to war with one another! It's super interesting to read up on, but now I guess it's settled over handball 😉 We can't wait to visit Sweden again after the Covid mess is over.
It's okay, we kinda like you aswell, except for the Swedish part..
Skåne er dansk. Bare så du ved det.
The bridge over Øresund is build to make it easier to reconquer Skåne. You Swedes just doesn't know it yet, but we are working on a real cunning plan.
Giv os Skåne, Halland och Blekinge tilbake och vi sender en öl! 😆
nailed it guys, looking forward to your next episode :D
The villain in James Bond - casino royale is Also played by dane, Mads Mikkelsen
Yes, we owe Mads Mikkelsen an apology so we are going to make some more videos dedicated specifically to famous Danes 😀
You guys are awesome 😁 I'm new to your channel, and I love your content 🥰
There is a statue of Holger Danske in the dungeons of Kronborg Castle. A great Viking that is said to rise from the grave and help with the fighting if Denmark ever comes in troubles. Didn't happen in WW2, but maybe next time? ;) It is a really cool statue of a badass viking though. He just sits there sleeping, with his long beard, shield and sword.
Ah, yes we have seen him in person - well his statue at least. Such a cool legend 😃🇩🇰
Actually there was a resistance group during WWII called Holger Danske. The real Holger danske was a son of the danish king Godfred (died 812) in service of Charlemagne and mentioned in the song of Roland.
Can't believe I only found you guys now 2024. Thankyou for such an informative video.
Jealous U are there. Love from Australia 💗
The more I hear about Denmark the more I'd love to visit :) .
We're learning about Denmark right now and it was helpful thanks!
Glad this helped! There is a lot of awesome things to learn about Denmark!
@@RobeTrotting yeah and we have a test next week about Denmark and you guys helped me! I'm so ready for the test, thank you again!
Good luck!!!!
@@RobeTrotting thank you!
@@keueueu6383 Denmark have the oldest flag still in use and the oldest monarchy :)
Can't believe you guys aren't bigger on this platform, your videos are quality. New sub here
Welcome aboard and thank you so much, that's quite a compliment. Hopefully, we'll keep growing, and thank you for subscribing. We'll keep the videos coming 😀
Hi guys, get out of Copenhagen at visit the islands to , there you will learn so much more about Denmark 🇩🇰
By the way, regardless where you are in Denmark, we all have a bicycle 🚲 it’s something we have been raised with, and all city’s across Denmark, are designed for cycling 😉
Come to Odense, and learn so much more 😉❤️
Yes, we are a little embarrassed by how long it took us to begin exploring more of Denmark. We actually just spent the weekend in Kerteminde on Fyn, so we will be creating a video on the trip soon 😀
The bike culture here is just incredible, and we love how much it's a part of life (all over Denmark 😉). It's something more countries could learn from.
@@RobeTrotting , super cool 😉
Looking forward to seeing the video and also hoping that your going to spend a little time in Odense, visit H.C.Andersens home and a lot more 😉🙏
Have a great day you guys ❤️
Great video guys.
Glad you enjoyed it Mads, thanks so much for watching. We'll keep them coming 😀
Nice little intro you've made about you two :)
You've up'd the production-value ;)
It's so funny to hear the way you pronounce the Danish words when i come from Denmark
You should try to say "Rød grød med fløde"
It's always what we make people from other contries say in danish because it's so hard for them😂
I don't think we'll ever get to a point where we don't sound a little funny but you're so right, everyone asks for "Rød grød med fløde" LOL
@@RobeTrotting If the Danes ever tease you too hard about rød grød med fløde. ask them to say refrigerator 😄
I love hearing facts about Denmark that I didnt even know myself. And im danish :)
That's awesome, we're so glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts 😀🇩🇰
Nice video. Knew everything, since I'm from Denmark, but this video was presented in a very good way. Thanx guys!
Tusind tak! So glad you enjoyed!
You guys seem so empathetic - Very chill video.
Thank you so much! We really love it in Denmark so we hope to share that. So glad you liked the video, we'll keep them coming 😀 🇩🇰
i could really recommend rømø, one of the best beaches in europe or the world. Also my hometown tønder is really beautiful at christmas time, and ribe is the oldest town in denmark.
But you guys seem to be very open-minded and interested in learning about Danish culture and history, so I would definitely recommend you visit Fredericia on those days, if you ever get the chance, and maybe talk to some of the history-experts at the place 😊
Also, another related fun-fact: One of Fredericia's most iconic landmarks is called "Landsoldaten", which is a statue of a soldier from the war of 1849, standing with one foot on a small cannon, holding an olive-branch in his right hand above his head.
Fun fact, Margrethe also designed the coins we are using atm.
great channel guys :)
Interesting fact
Hans Christian Andersen actually wrote The Little Mermaid in 1837 as a love letter for a man named Edvard Collin.
Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid upon the news of Collin's marriage.
The original story is more of a tragedy than a romance: Here is the mermaid, longing for a life in the sun, but forever trapped in the murky depths of the sea.
Det var fantastisk! I har gjort virkeligt godt og har forklaret mange historie! Det var sjovt! Tusind tak!
It’s been 6 months that my husband I have moved to Copenhagen from India and we were unaware of so many information shared here.
Which is also cool.😀
Plus there is a lot of great local beers around.
Cheers from Tylstrup. Vendsyssel.
Skål.
Happy to hear that people like you guys want to teach others, about what we have to offer as a whole. Sometimes, it seems like we just get glossed over with:
Aw poor Danes 😂
At least you have the coolest looking dog named after you hehe
Please tell me you have visited other places than a 50 mile radius of Copenhagen... so much more to see guys!!!
Yes, of course - we just live in CPH, so for a random weekend of filming it's our go-to haha. We have a long bucket list of other Danish destinations so we promise to get around more. We'll have a Fyn video soon. We're saving many for when things open up a bit more though :)
So that's why I see so many of them, heading down to buy at the border store 😂.
Im thankfull for that
Great video ❤️🇩🇰
Thank you Jelena 😊🇩🇰
Hi im from Denmark, and i gotta say it's always funny to hear People trying to say the letter "ø and å" but you were pretty decent at it;) Btw cool to see a UA-cam video talking about 14 facts in Denmark, when you think of how small Denmark is:) Great video!
Thank you so much! We'll keep trying with the pronunciation and making more videos, especially about Denmark 😀🇩🇰
I just that as a Dane, even i sometimes learn some new facts about Denmark when watching your videos.. 😀😊♥️
What about the astronaut, and Michelin restaurants and sports, Hand all, football, formular 1 etc. 😉
Yes, great additions! We hope to cover some of these in their own videos too, we are huge fans of New Nordic and the food scene in Denmark. It's finally getting the attention and "foodie" reputation it deserves.
Lis, de kan jo hellere ikke få det hele med, så vil det jo vare evigt.
@@RobeTrotting It's a shame a couple of the big names in Copenhagen have had to shut down due to Covid :/ Hopefully once things open up properly again we'll see the movement take off like before, but I kinda doubt it...
Nice production value and lovely way of presenting the facts, as you’re literally standing in the middle of it and not just in an anonymous studio ❤️🇩🇰
try Nørrebro in Denmark it is a place with many resturans and stuff to do.
Yes, great suggestion! We love Nørrebro, so much to do there! We have to head there for a future vid. Our favorite place to eat is Ramen to Bíiru, but there are so many great spots for a bite to eat and/or a beer.
If only you could have experienced Nørrebro like it was back in the 80's. Today it has become less Danish in so many ways and it is really sad!
Also, when you guys feel confident in understanding danish pretty well -
Take a binge on the many great danish kult movies, like Olsen Banden, Druk, Matador, Borgen, etc.
