Ben stokes was the only player in England's squad who could've played the way he did. I don't think anyone else could have paced their innings that well and relied on others to attack.
I've been talking for years about the importance of role clarity in white-ball cricket, and how it is almost impossible to create a world-class white ball team without at least four dual-role players, as there are usually eight batting roles, six bowling roles and the role of a wicket-keeper that you need to squeeze out of eleven players.
England is the only team that has been fully able to implement this kind of a vision so far, but almost every team looks better when it is built with this roles-based structure in mind. Let's look at the West Indies T20 team as an example:
1. Evin Lewis (powerplay hitter)
2. Kyle Mayers (powerplay hitter / 1 & 7 bowler)
3. Nicholas Pooran (middle-overs hitter / wicket-keeper)
4. Roston Chase (anchor batter)
5. Shimron Hetmyer (middle-overs hitter)
6. Rovman Powell (death overs hitter)
7. Odean Smith (death overs hitter / middle-overs seamer)
8. Akeal Hosein (firefighter / attacking spin bowler)
9. Alzarri Joseph (top & tail pressure bowler)
10. Imran Khan (stump-to-stump spin bowler)
11. Sheldon Cottrell (top & tail pressure bowler)
I've not particularly changed the personnel of that team, but by clearly defining each player's role it means that the team would be far more organised and more able to deal with certain situations; not least because they're facing them all the time.
Take Kyle Mayers for example: he's an opening batter whose only job in that role is to get the ball over the infield as often as he can in the first six overs. With the ball, his role is all about creating leverage for the five main bowlers by squeezing one or two overs in where opposition teams are traditionally not up to speed: the first and seventh overs.
If no wickets are lost in the powerplay, then Roston Chase likely doesn't bat at all - his job is to stop the rot if there are two early wickets. And so on, and so forth.
Clearly defining a role within the team makes it far easier for replacement players to step into the side and know exactly what's being asked of them, which is something that England are traditionally very good at.
Surely Flinoff's Odi numbers hold up well? 32 with the bat 24 with the ball at an economy rate of 4.32. He'd be up there with England's best ODI players for me.
I would probably say England have had four all time greats (in various forms) behind their two World Cup wins. Bairstow and Buttler are two all time great white ball players, Root is a test & ODI great, Stokes is just a great cricketer, even if the numbers don't match up to other greats like Kallis.
The great thing about Stokes is not his overall record but his ability to win a game for England when it was really needed, In a final or in a must-win qualifying game for instance!
@@stevebrindle1724 Yeah, we will remember Stokes and his performances in big matches: two World Cup finals, Headingley 2019, fastest test century at Lord's, second fastest test century ever, numerous spells of bowling to open up games, even his first test century. Whereas, Kallis, as great as he was there aren't many performances where I go to in my head. Though I can tell you without looking that he got over 11,000 runs at 57/58, over 40 test centuries and nearly 300 wickets at about 32.
I mean stokes is probably the best cricketer in history of English cricket
He may have not the same stats as Kallis but he will go down as the man that has made legacies and yet he is only 31 yrs old so more to come I hope
Stokes has never been near a big bad hitting machine. If you look at his t20 stats even pre WC he's had a small s/r.
Hey Jarrod, from the points plotted on the graph at 14:38, I think it's obvious that England sometimes bat 1st and a lot of times bat 2nd, but never bat 1.5th. Do you think this is a weakness that opposition teams can exploit against them, by making them bat 1.5th?

@Jarrod Kimber While I agree statistics would give one a generic idea of how a team had progressed or regressed over a period of time, It would better if we were to look at every aspect of a victory or defeat to assess where the team stands in its core objectives and not compare themselves with some other team.
1.There is this mission that ICC has taken to resuscitate the test cricket or rather red ball cricket a few years back wasn't it ??While I agree that White ball cricket system similar to the english set up currently would aid both the ODI and T20 formats, I doubt if it would be a sustainable option considering that a lot on the techniques, temperament and mental strength required for a test match is being heavily compromised. This would eventually end up being hypocritical in the approach. This was evident as they were drubbed at the Ashes 4-0.
2. While I congratulate the English team on the latest achievement in white ball cricket, I doubt if a specific approach to success would yield a long term results considering the technology available and being in an era where every detail and aspect of the player is analyzed to prepare counter strategies for the same. While I agree that it has yielded success specifically for the grounds they have played in australia, this needs to be tested in other grounds as well on a sustained basis to test if it really worked and how would it have transpired with different toss results and different sequences of grounds.Besides Adelaide unfortunately, one among the grounds in australia I would say that had a somewhat a predictable trend of the teams chasing winning the match , a sought of anti-thesis to the dubai grounds. The order of the grounds in which the team play's and grounds a team focuses on would have a effect on the way they would play on a given day.
3. I would suggest that the teams consider the mechanism of the domestic cricket operation, the cricketing style, the pool talents, coaches, etc and tailor the teams to approaches that would be ground agnostic and a adaptible approach to cricket in all the formats of the game or may be create format specialized teams with some flexibility.
While I give England their due credit, I don't buy the fact that a team approach is superior just because they have performed well in a specific tournament or a team's approach is inferior just because they lost or were royally drubbed on a given day. It all comes down to how the players are able to read the conditions well, and implementation of strategies along with the execution which depends on how situations augur well with the strategy (which is literally a gamble) on a given day. The mental strength of the team and its players at a given moment and how a team is able to handle pressure and crunch situations matters in each of the formats on a day serves as the core for the success of the team in a format.
Conclusion: Something which is a local optima and happens at the spur of moment isn't worth considering, but rather something which forms the basis for that outcome needs to be considered, which is by keeping off the external and internal noise which would help the players to focus more in that moment and deliver better goods in addition to their practice. I don't feel that any team should copy the approach of any other team. It just has to be what would be best for their setup needs to be focus.

Congratulations to Team England. But are they the best team?...No... definitely not.....they hardly batted well in this tournament. They lost to Ireland. They struggled in all the other matches. Their match winner Stokes, played like Dhoni who is in his 40s. Jus India's and Pakistan's bad batting led to an English victory. There is no renaissance, there is no revolution and there is definitely no new era. Jus tough pitches and good bowling

That's why test cricket is the best form of the game. As the best team will normally win, even if its a close and exciting game. One Day cricket, the best team doesn't always win. All it takes is for 1 or 2 players on the opposing team to have a brilliant game and the better team loses.
