the fact that nes samus has this many frames of animation is honestly the most mind-boggling part of this game
It looks great but I admit, 60-FPS-grade animation on 8-bit sprites hits my uncanny valley something fierce.
There are other animations that could be touched up, not because they need it, but simply so that the run animation looks a bit less lonely.

One of the coolest features (tiny touch) is the shadow when youre in the lava. so much attention to detail. phenomenal

I feel like if this was one of those indie games that surprise-dropped on Steam, made as an original IP, it would explode into popularity and be nominated for this year's Game Awards. There's so much stuff here and the community aspect is brilliant, it's basically Binding of Isaac, but with Metroid instead of Zelda.

It does my heart good to hear Fusion both mentioned and praised. That game was my *jam* growing up.
I've played the first metroid so much that the extra color effects and smoother animations are like not knowing you needed glasses and putting them on for the first time.

Between this and Castlevania ReVamped, it's incredible to see NES-faithful-yet-expanded takes come out for both progenitors of the titular mashup genre. Add Mega Maker to the mix and you're practically getting a famicom renaissance

It's weird that it uses the Segeru currency only ever named in the Japanese-only prequel manga released alongside Zero Mission, but it use the incorrect Zebes translation "Zebeth"
Because Zebeth is a lot more NEStroid-y, I presume.

Im really glad you streamed this because I love it. I always hated the OG Metroid, but with these improvements, it's pretty great.
Plus, that randomizer mode is essentially infinite Metroid. I downloaded like 2000 rooms off their discord and now I can just generate an INSANE amount of Metroid runs, its so cool.

14:06 to be fair to that chatter who called it a spinoff, besides the fact that other M sucks so bad that people want to ignore it's existence, other M's story contradicts literally every other game in the series to the point that either everything else is canon or only other M is.
Also it has been demoted to spinoff in nintendos eyes already
In my opinion, the definitive way to play NES Metroid. It's worth it just for the higher air speed when jumping and the lack of lag greatly increasing the pace of the game.
You betcha! Heck, the Zebeth campaign already had me reeled, but then there was Novus which was expertly designed, and it was a blast to play!
I think stuff like this is in no way a replacement for playing these old games as they were released just on emulator. It’s a fantastic mod but not a 1-1 replacement for such a different game
@Boney9551 maybe not, but it's definitely my preferred way of doing it.
And it's not even due to the map, the fact you can only have either the Wave or Ice Beam, or the improved physics.
It's just the fact you don't restart with 30 energy points every time you die, regardless of how many energy tanks you have. And there's no easy way to regain health unless you manage to find the Screw Attack. That's the only dealbreaker that makes the original game way more frustrating for me.

on the topic of starting out in the series. Zero Mission is definitely the best place to start, and personally I'd say play the prime games next. But I think vanilla Metroid 2 honestly really holds up and it is currently the most accessible way to play metroid 2. I'd say TRY IT, if you don't fw it go for AM2R
I like how the environments in metroid almost have like random blocks in it. I did that with a texture edit for minecraft once and it actually looked really good.
...But at least when I was making texture edits, you had to use mods for random stuff like that and the mods took a long time to come out after the game got updated. And each update broke the mods.

A question for Planets fans as much as a comment.
Is there a predisposition for seeds to require early Morph Ball? Because I assume due to its user created nature people probably default to designing rooms that feature Morph Ball movement since, to be fair, most Metroid games give you the Morph Ball right away.
And if so does the game know how to adjust to that? Like if there was a sudden influx of user rooms that didn't require Morph would more seeds generate that feature late Morph Ball?

Winters are absolutely terrible on the Metroid Planets.
Other seasons are pretty nice though.
If this had support for custom music like Lumanist's analog synth remixs, the proper 8:7 pixel aspect ratio and sharp bilinear interpolation it would be truly perfect.
Also maybe the original game's credits as a setting but it's optional.
I like the theory about other M how Adam is controlling Samus bioshock style and it isn't until he dies that she's free from whatever they did to her at the start of the game (where it shows her as a fetus or whatever).

At some point there will come an update that will allow you to download rooms from the game itself, though currently there does exist a Metroid Planets community discord with active creators who make room packs all the time.

I can't believe I got spoiled on a podcast I was listening to on a Vinesauce Metroid vod.
If you take out all the drama behind it, the developers apparent ego, other M is a fun enough game. It's like the equivalent of a bee flick That is cheaply made, but still kind of enjoyable. It is also an incredibly easy game to 100%.
The Box (2009) was a good movie, I should watch it again.

My favorite part is how this concept is immune to "curse of similar first party release" because Nintendo would *never* be able to make a version of this that works without community moderated packs, this concept would be hot garbage with the mario maker formula. Per room basis means creators have much more control, curated packs from many creators gives you unpredictable new gameplay while avoiding the endless garbage ocean^tm, and you are given actual tools to make your rooms look pretty (for this one genuinely eat your heart out mario maker).
This project looks amazing, if the bosses were updated (like in the Castlevania 1 fangame) it'd be perfect.

15:30 Prime _is_ mainline series. Like yeah it's in 3D first-person oh nooooo but I just don't see it as somehow a spinoff or even very different. It even has some of the same nearly-Metroid-exclusive exploits and quirks as the 2D games
Prime is still its own series though. Metroid (from NES up to Dread) is essentially mainline stuff. The prime games are side games to the main series but aren't spin offs. Hunters, Pinball and Federation Force I'd count as spin off games

Here's the only correct order: Metroid 1, Metroid II:Return of Samus, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Dread.
You can substitute Planets for the original for a better experience because it's so faithful. Unfortunately a definitive remake of RoS doesn't exist yet, so if you want the true M2 experience you're stuck with the GB version.
Fun fact, it is flatly illegal to mod games in Japan
