The most remarkable thing about Buddy Holly, is that he has a catalogue dozens of incredible songs that he wrote, and he died at 22. He was a genuine musical prodigy.
Sorry but that is untrue. The lyrics were written by Norman Petty and the melody is from an old Gospel song named It's Allright. His widow repeats this lie nearly every day but she makes it up as she goes. She also says 'Heartbeat' was also written for but that song was written by Buddys friend Bob Montgomery. She just lies and lies and lies.
This is especially sad. Buddy wrote this beautiful song for his new wife Maria, who was expecting their first child. He was killed shortly after at only 22ys old. Maria lost the baby a few days later . R.I.P. Buddy.
Thank you for this but I have to make a couple of corrections. His wife's real name was Elena not Maria. I have a copy of her birth certificate. The song was written before Buddy even met her! Buddy 'borrowed' the melody from an old Gospel song called 'I'l Be Allright' which incidentally was played at his funeral. Buddy wrote the music and Norman Petty wrote the lyrics so it was not written by Buddy for his wife. By the way we now know without doubt, that she was not pregnant. Thank you
@@happyolddude Buddy Holly wrote “True Love Ways” as a wedding gift to his wife, Maria Elena Santiago Holly. During a visit to the offices of music publisher Peer-South Music in the Brill Building in New York City, Buddy met Maria and asked her out. He proposed to her on their first date, June 19, 1958.Nov 22, 2019
@happyolddude what do you mean, she wasn't pregnant? Everyone including the widow said she lost the baby. That is why they changed how they released information of a death. Which is they can't announce it until family is notified.
Buddy was special. This is always a such a sad day for us down here in Texas. He was just beginning to take off career wise. No telling what he would've achieved had he not been killed in that crash.
Bittersweet whenever I hear Buddy Holly. Beautiful voice and soul. You would enjoy the movie about Buddy. He was a great person. He toured with Sam Cooke and other acts of that time. He even played the Apollo.
Thanks for that tribute to Buddy Holly. His wife was pregnant with Buddy's child, the night the plane went down in the storm, killing Buddy, Richie Valens, the "Big Bopper," and the young pilot of that terrible night. Thank you
I'm sorry but The Buddy Holly Story with Gary Busey was a total travesty of the truth. A good effort on Busey's part but nothing like the proper story.
What a musical library by a kid from West Texas. One of the pioneers of Rock and Roll, so influential to so many of the legends who followed. Buddy Holly will live as long as music is played.
It is 64 years that they all died. This is my favorite song, True Love Ways. He wrote it for his wife Maria Elena who was pregnant and miscarried when she heard that he died. She always used to tell him that It was true love ways what they did together. 1959 a year I will never forget.
buddy was one of the 1st rock and roll people to produce his own music, bringing violins into a rock and roll song, another great song by buddy's RAINING IN MY HEART
Yes Buddy Holly wrote all his music. He was very instrumental in how The Beatles wrote and sang. The Beatles patterned themselves after Buddy Holly and The Crickets, with two guitars, a bass, and drums. Even the name was an homage to their hero. Great artist, and a huge loss for rock_n_roll.
Just to give you an idea of the influence of this brilliant young man,Paul McCartney has said that the first 40 or so songs he wrote with John Lennon were directly influenced by Buddy,The Rolling Stones first hit here in the states was "Not Fade Away", a whole group in the sixties tributarily called themselves The Hollies, and his songs were extensively covered by both rock and country artists in first two decades after his death/RIP-Rock On Buddy!
This was a posthumous hit for Buddy and as his biggest fan at the time aged 13 I was devastated at the loss of such a genius and so down through the years I have maintained my love of his music and so much so that this was our first dance song at our wedding. Years later I got to meet Maria Alena his widow at the stage performance of BUDDY the story of his life. Still tear up whenever I hear this song. Please keep this music alive so the generations can also hear it. THANK YOU
Thanks for keeping the music & memories alive. Glad that you are doing some more of Buddy Holly's music. He was one of the early pioneers of 1950's rock & roll. His style was influenced by gospel music, country music, and rhythm & blues acts. He wrote a lot of songs during his short life & did some great covers too such as "Maybe Baby", "Peggy Sue", "Bo Diddley", "Everyday", "Oh, Boy!", "Not Fade Away", "Rave On", "It's So Easy", "True Love Ways" etc.
Thanks for remembering Buddy Holly. He's one of the all-time best, and this is my favorites song of his. Maybe the prettiest rock song, ever. Great reaction. (By the way, it was, indeed, an awful day. Buddy's untimely death was my first personal encounter with such tragedy. I was 15.)
If you want Shawn & Mel. check out the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa. That is where those guys last played before they died. The Surf has a Winter Dance Party every February 3rd in their honor. You can also see the exact spot where they plane went down.. Its in a corn field just outside of Clear Lake,Iowa. There is a memorial on the exact spot.
Loved and admired by so many. Still being covered until this very day. Beatles, Rolling Stones,. you name it. You might want to watch Paul McCartney;s movie The REAL BUDDY HOLLY STORY. And he was only 22 when he was taken away from us all.
This group of musicians was travelling on an old bus that kept freezing up and had no heat. They were burning papers in the aisle to try to get warm. Originally, Buddy Holly and the guitarists, Tommy Allsup and Waylon Jennings, were going to fly. The Big Bopper was fighting the flu and convinced Jennings to give him his seat. When Ritchie Valens couldn't talk Allsup into giving up his seat, they flipped a coin. Before they parted ways Buddy Holly jokingly said to Waylon Jennings "I hope your damn bus freezes up again" and Jennings answered back "well, I hope your ol' plane crashes". This haunted Jennings for many years.
Thank you Shawn and Mel. Love that you honor Buddy and the artists whose plane crashed in that horrible blizzard after one concert on their way to the next town.
He was such a young man too and newly married. It still hurts when you think about all the beautiful music that was lost to the world when that plane crashed. The Big Bopper was very talented and fun, but I really enjoyed Richie Vallen's music. La Bamba is one of the best rock songs ever. If you haven't played that yet, you might really enjoy it! It is impossible not to get up and dance. Mel might like it because it is a great song to play at weddings and family gatherings. Everyone will get up and move. :)
Thanks for remembering these three fine gentleman and great singers. This song should of been more popular it's great. RIP to Buddy. Richie and Jiles(Big Bopper)!
Thank you so much for this. I was just watching someone react to Peggy Sue and I thought why not 'True Love Ways", "Maybe Baby", "Rave On' or "That'll Be The Day". A great way to commemorate today. I hope you are starting to understand the meaning behind "American Pie". You can see the change in the culture from the days of Buddy Holly and how the 60's music was influenced through the Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Stones, The Byrds, Joplin et al. The tragedy basically reflects on the day America lost its innocence. Thanks again and God Bless.
Another good song from him is Heartbeat I relly recommend it. I believe you 2 would really enjoy it. Thank you very much for doing the o;d music back to life. It amazes me how much you like the old music.
When I was teenager, I'd look at my bio dads' picture and listen to Buddy Holly's albums, my dad looked exactly like Buddy Holly, I would take dad's picture out of my hiding place look at dad's picture and imagine it was him singing.
You're right S&M, there's something that's still so sad about that day, even though it was before my time. Buddy Holly's music is timeless though and we'll always have it to remember him by.
Instant goosebumps !!!!! Omg people don't realize how young he was and what he did in his so very short brilliant life. Love Buddy ✌❤ this is the song at the end of the movie and is beautiful ❤
That song was the song we danced to on are wedding day and we been together 45year and we still dance to it even though my wife is disabled and i still love her.
So sad to lose them all in a plane crash... The day the music died. 😔😢 You really have to watch the movie "La Bamba" about Ritchie Valen's to get a better understanding of this. ❤️

The group the Hollies named themselves after him. I was at a Concert where the Hollies had asked permission from his Widow to use his voice along with their performance it was amazing!
Hi Shawn and Mel Buddy Holly was great. In those days when an artist had "it" they were really encouraged to work hard and produce as much great songs as they could and do as many shows as they could as well some were up to the challenge others weren't Buddy Holly definitely was. What would happen if your songs weren't on the charts you would soon be forgotten and the kids that listened to this stuff would be on to the next thing. It wasn't like it is now where artists that haven't produced anything or anything good for years even decades are still considered superstars.
He was so talented and influential and wrote many songs in his short life. There are movies from the '89s about Buddy Holey and Richie Vallens...Gary Busey was amazing playing Holly and did his own singing ...check it out
This great singer/songwriter "Buddy Holly" and his band "The Crickets" were the first white group in 1957 to play at the fame Apollo theatre on 125 street in Harlem New York City. He married a Puerto Rican woman name "Maria Elena Holly." This song "True Love Ways" was Buddy Holly's tribute song [1958] to his wife Maria Elena. Awesome song... Buddy Holly has influenced so many musicians over the decades..... Try "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere", by Dwight Yoakam... See if you can hear the "Buddy Holly Influence"?!❤❤❤
@Shawn and Mel- To answer your direct question about Buddy Holly and his songs. He wrote every single one of them. The guy was nothing short of a pure genius. Its just so very sad that we lost such a great artists at so young of an age. He was really just getting started.
Great work guys finding this song. I grew up as a young teenager during this time and it brings back some nice memories I believe this was his best song that he wrote. 🍻 cheers
The most remarkable thing about Buddy Holly, is that he has a catalogue dozens of incredible songs that he wrote, and he died at 22. He was a genuine musical prodigy.
Amen
Yes. And his understanding of the use of chords paved the way for rock music until today.
Buddy wrote this song as a wedding gift for his wife, Maria Elena, in 1958.
Totally untrue!
Shame he died a year later.😢
Very romantic.

Such a great song . Buddy was only 22 when he died
One of the all-time best love songs ever written ❤
Without a doubt!!
Buddy was special. This is always a such a sad day for us down here in Texas. He was just beginning to take off career wise. No telling what he would've achieved had he not been killed in that crash.
Thank you for this. "A long long time ago, I can't remember if I cried when I read about his widowed bride, but something touched me deep inside..."
Listening to this has me picturing the scenes from the movie The Buddy Holly Story 😢
Buddy Holley was such a big influence to musicians. Especially the Beatles. They took their name as a tribute to Buddy Holley's back up the Crickets
Thank you @judy dalton, lol, saved me typing.
Definitely, a true pioneer. Maybe the most beloved singer ever.
Bittersweet whenever I hear Buddy Holly. Beautiful voice and soul. You would enjoy the movie about Buddy. He was a great person. He toured with Sam Cooke and other acts of that time. He even played the Apollo.

That’s great you’re remembering Buddy, Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens today! Great song! You guys are great!
The Buddy Holly Story film is well worth watching. Gary Busey did all his own vocals and got nominated for an Oscar.
I'm sorry but The Buddy Holly Story with Gary Busey was a total travesty of the truth. A good effort on Busey's part but nothing like the proper story.
Today makes me sad but God remember them boys who died today in 1959. I mean the pilot of the plane too.
So sad that he was lost to us so young. So much talent never fulfilled.

The Master.... Buddy Holly
I love his little runs on “we’ll” in “Sometimes, we’ll cry”.
Shawn & Mel, thank you so much for reacting to Buddy Holly.
A song meant to melt a girl's heart! This song is considered the first recording of strings in a Rock & Roll song -- harp, violins, violas, & cello.
Buddy Holly awesome man RIP Buddy.
Buddy did write his music. One song he wrote with his mom was Maybe Babby.
This is such a beautiful song. I got a little choked up there. 😥🥺🎤🎶🎼
Yall gonna make me cry membering my daddy's favorite, I can't tell you how many times he was drinking beer crying to his music
I personally think Buddy may be the most important artist in pop music history.
A true legend, thank you so much, I am old enough to remember his great hits..

This song didn’t come out until after he died. Living near Lubbock I’ve always loved Buddy Holly.
So many great songs. So very young.

Had Buddy Holly lived a full life, I'm sure he would have wrote and recorded countless wonderful songs over the decades.
It's the "wondering" that makes such things hurt so much.
One of the fist popular musicians to bring in orchestral instruments on songs....truly a pioneer. Also wrote and produced his own work.
So beautiful thanks x
This is a special day ,I allmost forgot Thanks
That song was the song we danced to on are wedding day and we been together 45year and we still dance to it even though my wife is disabled and i still love her.

This is my wife's and I first dance at our wedding 03/16/2013
@ShawnandMel Thank you
I didn't know it was today. Good that you're commemorating it. How about doing "Maybe Baby" by him?
TRUE LOVE WAYS was a great expression of sincere heartfelt emotion that touched many young people ( me at age 5) even if they were too young to truly understand it.
Thank you so very much for this. You two truly felt this deep down.
I was a child when the plane crashed. Rock and Roll was in it's infancy. Thank God that some of their music.
My father passed away in '93,when I was 13 years old, at the young age of 39..my mom had lyrics from this song etched on the foot stone of his grave❤
He died six years before I was born...and I still know all of his music, because it kept playing.
In Germany in the 1970s, Buddy, Richie & Bid Bopper belonged at every party. They died when I was 2 but I will always remember them. 😭
Shawn you need to play this back and ask that beautiful lady to dance. Cmon my man!
I love you two! May God bless you both.
63 years? Wow how time flies.
I feel this was done for his young bride at the time.
Such a beautiful song 🎵, it makes me tear up every time. 😢 on the lighter side, what a great make out song.
