- NYC-Urbana co-slammaster Jeanann Verlee performs her spoken word poem "Communion" @ the Bowery Poetry Club, summer 2009. The text of "Communion" is available in Jeanann's book, "Racing Hummingbirds" (Write Bloody Publishing, 2010).
12 years later and it still kicks me in the gut.
When her voice softens into that smooth tone after yelling, i get chills.
"No one wants to hear how they made me drink lemon juice, how they kicked the dog, how they upturned the furniture." so much simplicity in this line but it gets to me so much, she's a powerful writer.
"I walk like an apology."
This poem, this poet, so gorgeous.
I cry every time. This is so painfully beautiful.
this is probably her best one
Don't look at this surface, don't take words so simply. You have to feel it and see the symbolism. If you still don't understand then you probably never will.
Wow I can relate to her so well. She's my new favorite.

... It's about rape. not depression and bullying..
It's about depression, bullying, the terrible tension between daughter and father that shouldn't exist because she's his little girl and always will be. It's about being a feminist and hating the belief that feminists hate men. It's about hating yourself but not wanting to share it with anybody because most of them dissmiss because they don't believe you or it makes them uncomfortable. It's about being aware of the depression of others.
It's metaphor at its best.
