I have never in my life been interested in the details of boat care. And here we are. It takes a unique combination of charisma and passion to get people excited about things they wouldn’t normally have interest in. Well done, Jacob
I was scraping barnacles and painting red lead when I was 10 years old, Jacob probably helped his dad even younger. Jacob knows what he's doing. I wish Dad could eat a lobster with him.
That was great! Never seen this done to such a large boat before. As an ER/trauma nurse, I kept waiting for the boat to squish you! We just naturally think that way … don’t want you ending up as paste under the sea! Happy lobstering! 🇨🇦🖖🏻🇨🇦
Growing up, our next door neighbours were members of the local Yacht Club here in Toronto Ontario Canada, and I would hear them talking about boat related stuff, so this maintenance stuff didn't surprise me at all! Also, my Mom helps out her friend all the time who has a sail boat and it has to be hauled out of the water every winter. We're talking freshwater boats though, because we live around the Great Lakes. I thought it was so cool that you actually use the tide to give you access to the hull and the rudder etc. Much respect to you and the work you do!
With the time crunch I'm sure glad your Dad was able to lend a hand. I'm sure in the not too distant future the kiddos will be recruited to help scrape the hull - always good to have more hands helping when the clock is ticking. Thanks for another informative and fun video!
Thank you so much for sharing this! I'm buying a wooden lobster boat in Vinalhaven this summer and have ZERO experience with boats. I'm a 44 year old woman woodworker with no mechanical inclination... my poor husband has some mechanical experience and is very anxious about my crazy new purchase. Thank you for teaching us about zincs! So cool your dad was able to get that hardware store setup!!! That's awesome!!!
I learn so much watching your videos! I also enjoy your sense of humor And appreciate what a hard working man you are. We have a 45 year old son so we also relate to your great relationship with your father. My husband and I are currently in Bar Harbor. Staying in places on the ocean we have the opportunity to watch the lobster fisherman going in or out and have a better understanding of the trade because of your videos. Thank you!! Take good care
Ohmygosh ! Why did I never think about maintenance? I just enjoy your videos! Wow!! I love seeing your dad!! So now we know Santa restocks those bolts!😄 So glad you made a video of this for us!!!
As kids, dad would run the boat up on a sand bar and give us brushes to clean the waterline. Of course, there was more play than scrubbing, but it was only one aspect of boat maintenance. Ah, those were the days! Also, the boat had a 671 gray marine diesel engine. I love hearing your engine run!
love the hardware store drawers, my boss bought a harware store stock at auction, was great for our business, for selling and using, love the DAD look about the automatic bolt replacement
What an interesting glimpse into the complexities of tracking down the root cause(s) of those symptoms you described. I have to say, watching you brace the boat with no real safety measures triggered a tsunami of heebee-jeebees!
The Hardware farie restocks the bolts! 😂😂😂 My husband comes from an electrician family. His father bought out an electrical hardware! I have "shopped" in his warehouse more than once over the years!
If those bolts work their way out again, I suggest using lockwire to make it harder for them to come out... though those may degrade pretty quick, not sure how well lockwire holds up under water
This is so cool! I love the behind the scenes look at working boats. No barnacles allowed! And it’s amazing what happens when missing a couple bolts. A few dollars in hardware means hundreds or thousands of dollars of fuel.
@@TheFirstShotCounts I bet. If you aren’t watching out it does come in and out faster than you would think! Of course makes sense with how far it travels but still I can see how you’d get trapped out there if you weren’t paying close attention!
So stinkin awesome to see the ins and outs!! You do such a FANtastic job showing us how hard it is of an industry!! Such a pleasure to have a tidbit of your ahhmazing life shared with us🎉🎉🎉🎉 Thank you 🙏
There is still a careening stand at the town dock in Southwest Harbor. It doesn't get much use any more since the majority of boats haul out for at least part of the winter and do their bottom work when they are on the hard. Do you not have a cage for fuel economy reasons? Incidentally I was out in the Great Harbor of MDI this week and there is almost no gear there. I expect that most of the local fishers are working out past the Duck Islands. Last year there was very little gear in the Great Harbor (inside the Cranberries) until August and not all that much then. I also noticed that water temps were in the 53F range, which seems really high to me. I remember when water temps this time of year were in the low 40s at best.
I spent an entire summer with my Dad cleaning and prepping the bottom of his charter boat. Running a propane torch over the bottom to get the wood worms to back out enough to hook them and pull them out then scraping the bottom for barnacles and algae. After that we sanded or grinded the whole thing so we could get the old paint off and start new on the wood after we patched and caulked all the wood worm holes. After 2 months of repairing the hull we finally got to paint, 6 coats, 3 clear coats then the zinc paint. But on my when we finally finished it, just wow. Everything was new from outside in to the cushions, table and everything. She was capable of carrying 12 passengers in style and was able to cater to every whim. Very nice when done.
My father was the keeper of the Eddystone Light. He found him a mermaid one fine night. Out of that union came three, a porpoise, a pogy and the other was me!
....did anyone else expected more at the end. I wanted to see the boat is back in water. I don't know anything about boat, but this was a very nice video and I enjoyed it.
“That was kind of anticlimactic” LOL 😂😅 You’re a brave man Jacob!! Hahahah That looks WAY too sketchy!! 🤣 Great content!! Always something new and interesting to watch!! Since we began watching your channel, the wife and I have been learning something new, everyday, from you and the boys!! Thanks guys!!
When you got under the boat and started cleaning off the barnacles, I caught an ear worm, 'Barnacle Bill the Sailor.' Red skies at night, and calm seas, and may the breezes always be at your back.
Spa day for the boat! It might be worth getting one of those bolt and hole sizes to bring with on maintenance days. Then you can save some back and forth time by getting the size before hitting up the family hardware store.
almost 15 years I spent working at a marina in West Vancouver on pleasure craft. We used a LOT of *3M 5200* and we turned mussels and barnacles into soup with a 5000 psi power washer. I still can't eat mussels, and its been almost 5 years since I left
@6:38 "You take bolts out and they just keep restocking". We call that "The magic parts bin". I have a dishwasher, washing machine and bed that are magic as well.
Once the tide is out, seems you might could maybe scoot a couple more (maybe bumpered?) crabs under the lean side (and one or two on the off side, too) to improve safety. Better to do that step to reduce the risk.
No...but I do wanna know if you got rid of the vibration and found the two knots you lost!!! Really loved watching you and your Dad interact...'specially when you joked about the magic bolts refilling themselves. Looking forward to the update...God bless...
It’s really nice to see y’all not on the water and working with your dad, those times are priceless. You running in there and grabbing bolts probably makes him smile and say “ glad I got that shit when I did” 😂. I enjoy watching the videos and shorts and have learned a lot about lobsters and the different types and of course the always unexpected catches. Thanks for sharing all this with us and keep it coming cus you’re a great content creator just doing what you do in the day to day….. just set the camera up and let the good times reel! 😂
Terrific job!! Mike Rowe should help you on the next repair. :D Your dad is great. Loved his comments. Never realized how much you have to do for your boat, between the repairs and the maintenance on the traps too. What you go through for the love of lobstering. lol. Is that even a word? Thanks again Jacob. Jamie & Karl ~ Albany, GA.
I remember seeing those drawers in a hardware store as a kid. My young mind thought they were awesome, and my adult mind still does, makes things so much easier to find.
The amount of anxiety this video gave me...🥵🥵 you being under that boat.. oh sweet goodness. Over here praying you don't die. Fish need snacks and barnacle removals, and I need lobster education from here in the midwest 😂 Good Lord. I'm glad you are alive 😂😂
My grandfather is from NS and he used to go in the Boston harbor every yr to beach the boat and clean the bottom what he did was take a saw and a bunch of 2 by 4s to prop up against the gunny wall and it held up all the time try it might work for you. Just saying good luck
Another fascinating video! Can't wait to hear the updates in a future video on if the vibration is finally gone and if you gained back any speed! Keep up the amazing work Jacob!
I was given the exact same hardware setup as you have about 12 years ago from the owner of a hardware store. Comes in handy once a week for us or one of our neighbors. Hello from Siesta Key Florida
Do you get rope in the wheel often? Have you ever used one of Ron Thomas's rope cutters? Also: Skeg, the part connecting the keel with the with the bottom of the rudderpost on a single screw ship. Always liked that word.
Just wondering, with enough ships and captains in the harbour wouldn't it be possible to self fund either a floating pontoon dry dock or a fixed but basic dry dock?
I have every confidence that you know exactly what you’re doing. I can’t believe you’re not adding more cribbing before you work under the boat. I know, the other fishermen would razz you out but still . . .
Really interesting. Not ever being a boat owner, I would have never guessed that kind of maintenance was required! Terrific video.
That was nothing. Lol.
@James-vn8zb that was my thought too, man that's a wicked quick bit of maintenance.
@perryleduc1954 Quick, fast, and in a hurry. Although I lmao when he called 5200 duct tape for boats.
Ikr!! This is very interesting. I love this channel😊
Your dad buying an entire hardware store's stock is such a dad thing to do.

Hope you have very deep pockets

Are you going to be working the boat, or use it for pleasure?
Take a uscgaux boating class and watch old vids of wooden Monk in BC “travels with Geordi “. Especially last years haul out vid and plank replacement.
A boat is a hole in the water that you throw money into. Truth.
The look on your Dad's face when you said he probably looted his Dad's hardware was absolutely priceless 😂👍🏻

I like how you say this is the not “glamorous” part of the job. Honestly none of it does and that’s why I freaking love it.
I love that look your dad had about the stocking! Thank you for your hard work and sharing your life and family with us.

I visited the Bay of Fundy when I was a kid. The tides there are crazy, it’s an amazing sight to see and to walk out forever when the tides are low.
i fish the bay of fundy from shore all the time and it is waaay to easy to get trapped and circled by the rising tide
Fundy…not Fundi

I adore your Dad's accent. ❤this channel, I've learned so much. Thanks for sharing.
I love your dad! What a cool video. Thanks for teaching me stuff.
I love when his dad is in it too. In the off season they can video him telling life stories and I'd be right there 👀🤓🥳
Fascinating, I've been around a lot of boats, but I didn't know about the 5200 cure. It's all about doing the maintenance.
Your wife and children are very lucky to have you ❤ you make sure your kids have the same ethic as you ❤
I know nothing about your profession, yet I can't stop watching. You do an amazing job on your videos
I dont even know what body wash that ad is gonna be for but I'd buy it 😂
Wow your videos are so interesting and I enjoy learning from your videos thank you for posting on UA-cam.

I wonder if that vibration from the rudder was also causing cavitation in the water and killing some speed?
