Bankstown is a suburb of south-western Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is 16 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district and is located in the local government area of Canterbury-Bankstown Council, having previously been the administrive centre of the City of Bankstown prior to 2016.
Bankstown's central business district is clustered around Bankstown railway station. The commercial area beside the railway station is known as Bankstown Plaza, while the ethnic diversity of the area has created a host of restaurants, eateries and cafes.
Bankstown railway station is on the Bankstown line of the Sydney Trains network. The rail line was built to Belmore in 1895 and then extended to Bankstown in 1909. The line was electrified in 1926. In 1928, the line was extended westwards from Bankstown to join the Main Suburban railway at Lidcombe and the Main South line to Liverpool. I was born there in 1970. We lived in Mount Druitt .. My parent’s are Norwegian and they moved to Australia in 1968. We moved back to norway in 1975.. I wish i’d could come back some day and see the town before i get to old. I’m 53 years old now… ☺️

I really like how you feature suburbs. There's much more to Sydney than just the Harbour, the Opera House and The Rocks. The West particularly gets neglected (no beaches?) if not maligned, yet it is the real economic powerhouse of the city, an interesting place with lots of activity and a genuine work ethic (i.e. they get things done, rather than just big note themselves); with diverse, gritty and resilient people; and is very often a nice place to live and grow up.
Places like Camden, Penrith, Richmond, Kellyville, Schofields, Plumpton, Warragamba, and Western Sydney Parklands all have their own unique character; and it's that (rather than the usual Sydney cliches) that make the whole city really vibrant. Too often we only focus on the touristy and 'pretty' places. When I travel I want to see the 'real' nature of a place. It's so good that you are doing that.

Camden and Richmond are actually not in Sydney as both they born towns just outside of Sydney.

@@Homeandawayguy Depends. They certainly aren't in the 'City of Sydney', which is mostly just the CBD. However, Camden is in the Camden council area, which like many other local council areas around Sydney, is listed as part of 'Greater Sydney'. Richmond is in Hawkesbury council area , which along with the Central Coast, Wollondilly and Blue Mountains is considered 'Sydney Surrounds'. They are not listed as part of any other identified regional area of NSW. I suspect they will end being part of the 'Six Cities' conurbation.

Is that where it was once called "old town centre plaza?" Used to be all pavement and no traffic way back in the 80s.

Is this Bankstown's version of Chinatown because for the whole 22 mins of the video, I only spotted one "caucasian" face? For the most part, from what i could see, nearly all the shops and businesses were owned by Vietnamese. Could this be a holdover from the end of the Vietnam War in which Australia was involved?

Wow.. the pavement is so full of clutter from the shops. They realy need to stop the shops from displaying their wares outside on the pavement. It spoils the experience...
