Referencing memes is a good way of dating your game, especially in the case of Guacamelee. Now if a game references a meme in its own series, like TES, then I think that shows a neat little connection between he devs and the community.

I feel like developers need to be careful when inserting memes into games - not only can it come across as overly pandering, it can break the immersion of the play and the realism of the world. And plus, since these references rarely age well, it can lead to many eyeroll moments.
