    "college is not that expensive"
    tfw people in other 1st world countries don't pay 1/10 of that...
    education should be free, educated people will make better decisions for the country. There's a reason why trump makes his speeches the way he makes; simple keywords that will have an impact on people, while not saying anything useful at all. He's targeting people without a college degree, and it is working.

      ...what? Trump supporters are old people who hate brown races and seek shortsighted goals because they're time on Earth is numbered. Targeting intellectuals is classic old person victimizing: nobody hates a smartass more than an old guy

      Unfortunately there's usually only an economic incentive brought up: go to college so you can make more money. The fact that people might get smarter and think critically doesn't really matter.

      Education, along with healthcare, housing, food and clothing is a human necessity, and should therefore be a government provided service. Otherwise, how is a poor person supposed to make it out of poverty without any of the above?

    • @brucec43
      @brucec43 7 років тому +35

      Yes, because you speak a language that few people speak, so if you don't learn other languages you can't communicate with any significant number of people. If an American never learns any languages besides English, he can still communicate with more than you can. Americans don't "need" other nations to prosper. So there's a less pressing need to learn their languages. The time spent is devoted to higher levels of prosperity and standard of living.

    I love your vids, but this one is severely flawed.
    People with degrees make a lot more than people without, but we have to remember, correlation =/= causation.
    People from good backgrounds and good parenting are far more likely to finish college. People from poor backgrounds with bad parenting are far more likely to not finish college. What this means is that the two groups of people (college vs high school graduates) are totally different pools of humans. The college degree is a factor, but their upbringings and environments are also hugely different.

    • @eragon78
      @eragon78 5 років тому +7

      +Bobloblaw1978 um, you cant get most higher paying jobs without a degree. Its not even a causation vs correlation thing, its legitimitely a matter of very few high paying jobs exist for people without degrees. There are a FEW, but not very many. And most of them require having very solid connections.
      Very few places except low skilled and low paying labor will accept people without degrees these days. Any form of skilled labor which pays more requires a degree 90% of the time.

    • @88COR88
      @88COR88 5 років тому +12

      @@eragon78 There are a lot of people out there with degrees that aren't in the higher paying jobs. The employers want the most educated and highly qualified people at the lowest price possible. For example: The requirements of a job don't require a degree but since the supply of degreed people is huge, employers can ask for it and get it. As a result even the good paying jobs that don't really need a degree are going to people that have degrees. This leads to anyone without a degree making closer and closer to minimum wage. When we look at the raw statistics it looks like a degree leads to higher wages but if we drilled into it we would see that jobs that used to go to high school graduates are now being filled by college graduates even though there is little change in the actual requirements of the job. It's a vicious cycle that will take people smarter then me to find a way out.

I dropped out after 2 years and in the end I managed to earn same amount as them without "losing" 4-6 years worth of money from jobs - secret? Know the stuff. Do you always talk out of your arse or is it something you've just decided to start doing? The income tax rate for the top bracket may not exceed 51.95% (which has a few exceptions like capital income tax). There are two brackets for state income tax - DKK 42,900 (£4,878) to DKK 421,000 (£47,867) and anything above DKK 421,000. The base one is taxed at 5.83% and the top one adds up 15%. The basic allowance is DKK 42,900.

      "Didn't get enough money for school? Get a part time job or join the military" In this day and age you cant do that, maybe in the past but not today. Yeah so go and kill people and risk dying, for a college degree. I have no qualms if you are fighting because you believe in the cause but if you are just doing it just for the benefits you might as well be a hitman.
      "If you're worthy of going to college/uni that will show in high school. As it currently is, you'll get the grants, scholarships, and loans you deserve." The things is the ones who receive scholarships are the exceptional ones and there isnt anything wrong with that. Its creme de la creme so its not going to count all those who are capable, just those who look like theyll do best. Yeah there are loans but do you really think having a generation burdened with huge student loan debt that is the only kind of debt you cant get rid of even by bankruptcy is a good idea?
      "It's not the responsibility of others to cover your liberal arts degree." Wow never seen that stereotype before. I see now, every person who complains about college being expensive in the united states must be a gender studies major, every one on wellfare in a pot smoking hippie, and anyone who suggests adding government programs is a spy from the soviet union. You have enlightened me.

  • @RemedialRob
    @RemedialRob 7 років тому +75

    I really like the channel but I have a pretty big issue with the way this subject is presented. I feel like a lot of stuff is glossed over or completely omitted in the calculations of not only what school costs but also what the total revenue of the schools involved is, what the government's contribution is, the final cost to students with fees and fines and tax credits and interest on loans. It also ignores things like alumni donations, which can include long term and rather huge funds that take a large cash donation, invest it, and funnel the profits yearly to the school in the form of grants, scholarships, and even yearly cash donations. It doesn't account for how many students are paid for directly by scholarships (though it does mention an average donation) which increases the student count and in a roundabout way increases costs to the student paying out of pocket. It doesn't talk about revenue generated by non-educational programs and how they affect the school. It doesn't talk about the fact that a lot of schools will offer free classes to alumni so they can return to take additional courses at the school over and above their degree free of charge and it doesn't seem to consider that government may be contributing less per student to schools but if there are so many more students than government may in fact be contributing more overall than it has in the past because 3% of 1000 is less than 2% of 4,000. Additionally while the 500k claim that you will lose may be statistically true it does not (incorrectly I feel) point out that many trade jobs like plumbers, electricians, mechanics, and so on can in fact go on to make a lot more than the average college graduate and that when choosing to either go to college or get educated in a trade one should also consider job security because as a society we have historically always needed people to fix cars and unclog toilets but many college education requiring jobs have disappeared through globalization and they often require much more specialization than trade jobs do. So even if there is a housing bust and you can't seem to find work in construction if you are handy with tools you will most likely be able to transition to other work that also uses tools where as the guy with the Art History degree is probably not going to do as well when all of the sudden museum attendace plummets and the art economy collapses. In short I'm subbed to this channel and I usually really like the vids but this one feel sort of lazy and sloppy. I don't mean that in an offensive way. No one is perfect. I just feel like the omitted info paints an incorrect picture of the subject at hand which isn't super great for anyone watching this informationally.

    I have to disagree and say that most colleges charge too much by taking advantage of the mindset that a college degree will get you a high paying job. America also has a bad mentality of letting people take whatever the hell they want vs putting up a list of professional jobs that are in short demand. Let me explain this. America needs more doctors, hence why we have a ton of people from India and China as your doctor. American needs more computer programers, hence why you have a ton of people from India and China. America needs...you get the point right? Other people have the right idea by filling in the jobs that we need but people here want to be artist, musicians, and entertainers which is fine, but you don't need to go to college to do this. Go to college to specialize in a trade, not because you want to find your inner self talent.
    I got into computers and completed no college. I did about 5 years of IT and then managed several help desks for a few years. My salary has been in the high 90s range, all without a degree. Things changed recently and now just about every company out there wants a bachelors degree at a minimum if you want to be an IT manager. Therefore, I am stuck from moving into another management position unless I go back to college and "invest" 40~50K and 4 years of my life just for a piece of paper stating that I can do the job that I have been doing for years. Until colleges get cheaper, or even better, allow you pick the classes that YOU want, it's just money down the drain unless you get a high paying professional job like doctors, engineers, etc.

End up flipping burgers working two jobs trying to pay off the student loans while still living with their parents well into their thirties? That's right, because it's a very different job market out there. Why college is expensive? i think they should replace that term with "gaining skills" because this anger towards education in the comments is pretty, sad. Canadians don't see college as something you NEED to do, but if you're lost, have no idea what skills you need to gain in order to be able to enter the workforce for your field, then school can help a lot. for most college programs it's less than $15,000 for the whole program, so it's a worth while investment (shit i was making $10,000 a year at minimum wage at $10/hr at the time, working part time at a department store in high school, so here that isn't a lot of money, it'll take a few years to pay back)
      i've had shit grades all throughout school. barely got the minimum amount of volunteer hours needed to graduate, i wasn't in any clubs, no awards... i've been accepted into all 10 programs i've applied to (and about 3-4 different schools, you don't get accepted into the school you apply to the program) and we don't really have "fancy" ivy league schools. the top schools in Canada cost nearly as much for tuition as some of the lesser-known universities. in college, you just choose what program you want and then chose the school based on if it's available.
      the culture in America towards post-secondary education needs to change completely. gotta start valuating experience, and skill building rather than just gaining degrees. in college i'm actually DOING things i'll be doing as a graphic designer, creating menus, logos, brochures, t shirts, posters, flyers, illustrations, branding design, making magazines and designing books, having them printed, learning about the printing process and the little things like embeding your fonts when sending to a trade printer... we learn how you need to design with clients (i.e not spending hours on a sketch, because it costs money which clients don't like, or using screenshots to show examples of photos instead of paying for a photo) we've gone through and created files for billboards, car decals, enamel pins... and i'm still in first year.

    I usually like Wendover Productions videos, but this one I didn't. The idea that universities need to appeal differently to students because 'millennials' are entitled is bogus. There are real structural differences between how universities today work and how universities in the 1970s and 80s worked that are not reducible to essentialistic claims about how a 'generation' acts. Things like the development of cheaper domestic travel, the US News and World Report algorithm-based university ranking system, the erosion of the tenure system, and a reimagining of the university as a business providing a product (education) to consumers (students) have all changed the way universities operate. A better analysis would explore these concrete issues and not rely on specious unprovable claims about generation-based characteristics.

    This video does not explain why College is much less expensive in other countries such as in Canada where I am studying at Fanshawe College in London and am enrolled in a 2-year diploma program which is going to cost me about $10,000.00 CND ($7388.63 USD) total, not to mention the very low-interest student loans which in fact do not even start accruing interest until 10 years after the study period is completed! Also many people including myself qualify for (sometimes hefty) government grants to incentivize low-income families to send their kids to college and help improve the economy by educating more people while also drastically lowering the poverty rate. Physically disabled people can also qualify for generous grants which leads to more disabled people being employed easing any perceived financial burdens to the state while making disabled people more independent and productive. And yet, I feel my College education is of equal or greater quality than most available in the USA. In addition, Canadian colleges do not skimp on the amenities or the architecture or the sports or anything that makes college a joy to attend. So why in god's name does US College cost more than 3 times what you might pay in Canada and more than 4 times what you might pay in Europe? In fact many European countries have FREE College all you need is legal citizenship to qualify for it!

      one of the other things I didn't really like is that they focused on the average tuition of US college/University but then used huge schools for every other example. Most of the large private schools you can end up paying upwards of $60k+ a year. It also didn't talk about school provided transportation or Housing either, which can be enormously inflated in price then private housing and public transport in the area. Often times a 1 room school dorm is more expensive than nearby apartments. Also speaking of grants, being low income while going to school I was able to apply for grants in the US, but depending on how they are applied, they usually count as income tax and I had to pay back a large portion of them back in taxes those years so it felt like I really wasn't actually getting that much towards my education. Also interesting enough, my field of study required me to attend classes at two schools, but due to some legal requirements the other school did not meet, I was not able to apply for school loans for those and had to take private loans to pay for those classes.

      technically nothing is free. the reason it is say cheaper in countries such as canada may be wages are lower or maybe building costs are cheaper etc. and also depends how much the government subsideses it. and in countries where it is free well the tuition is coming out of your taxes although tbf that is probably a far better option.

    • @mmutch7575

      First off, as a public college, the actual cost of tuition would be cheaper than at a university due to different staffing needs. Second, in Ontario the majority (over 50%) of tuition is subsidised by the government. Look at the tuition for foreign students, it's usually at least double.

    My son finished dental school and his tuition was around 300,000. If I do not help him paying back this amount with the interest rate, he needs at least 10 years to pay it back. As a new employee to a dental clinic he takes only 30% of what he works ( the 70% is overhead). Most insurances do not pay for dental work especially Medicaid.If I do not help him, when he can buy a car or a house etc..Our government is giving away billions of dollars to " friendly " countries while our students are in financial trouble. To be admitted to a dental school, you must be highly competitive and has a Bachelor degree in addition to Masters in a related subject. To finish Dental school you need at least 10-12 years of education in addition to a field specialty. If you work for 12 years in addition to another 10 years ( to pay your student loans ) =total 22 years of your life had gone without making any money. Better go to a tech school and be a plumber, or Heating and cooling tech school and you open your own business. Education is not profitable financially as it was before.

    College is an extension of high school these days. Most of the classes are weed out, designed to flunk everyone. These classes are Calculus, Chemistry, and Biology. If you are in high school reading this, be sure to take these classes now for college credit. Also, the way to reduce tuition is to attend a Public State university, not private, and to attend in the state you live. If you get straight A's in high school, you will also get a scholarship of some kind. Most high school kids don't realize this until 11th or 12th grade, and by then it's too late to get that GPA up.

    • @KP-by4eu
      @KP-by4eu 7 років тому

      if a class is designed to "weed out" students, you will NOT be able to do it in high school. Calc 2 is HARDLY a weed out class, for STEM, it's mostly physics(which you can't do for credits in high school ), quantum mechanics, differential equations. Same thing with Chem/bio. The chem/bio you can take care of in high school are introductory courses, which are not difficult at all. If you consider those weed out courses, you probably have no idea what you're doing in college. However, you should still take these AP tests for elective college credits, which will help you get earlier enrollment windows. The scholarship thing is also important. do scholarship essays. Many people think these are hard, but if you do the lower grant ones (500$ - 3000$), it's much easier, sometimes you're only competing with maybe 5-10 people. my friend spent roughly 4 hours doing essays for 3 scholarship, and he got 1 grant of 2500$. And ofc keep your GPA up because let's face it nowadays, 4.2 GPAs are considered average for mid-tier universities.

      No... you don't need a *lot* of work experience, you just need the experience and skills needed within your chosen profession.
      Going to University or College doesn't really give this whereas apprenticeships for an example does. That's why graduates struggle to find jobs after finishing going to University. They lack work experience and skills.
      Moreover, after a few years working in your profession, nobody will look at your qualifications including your degree because of your work experience.
      The problem is people are being sucked into thinking going to University is the norm and the way forward when in reality it isn't.

      The real reason it costs so much is that of government-backed student loans which encourages anybody to take out non-defaultable loans from the government to pay college tuition. So colleges get guaranteed money and can increase their prices because no matter what they can keep getting government money from students with no consequences. And the students are left to pay the tab. This video completely misses the point. He also fails to distinguish the value of one degree from another, like that of an engineering degree to a liberal arts degree. Similar in price in some places, but one gets you a job, and the other one makes you extra qualified to become a subway employee.

    I live in holland and here college costs only 10.000 euro per year(11.000 dollars), but as a student you only need to pay 2000 euro(2200 dollar), the state pays the rest for you. And besides that, you can also loan from the state around 12.000 euro(13.200 dollar) a year at 0.1% interest, and you only need to pay that back when you start working, so if your unemployed your whole life, you never need to pay it back (and banks and other loan providers cant take student loans into account when you want to buy a house and need a loan). And if thats not enough you can also get another 3000 euro a year (3300 dollar) if your parents are poor and you are studying. And students use on average 11.000 euro per year (12.100 dollar) to study all together, so everyone can study without debt issues. And I dont get why american college is so expensive, we've got some great universities in holland, but per student it costs almost 3 times less. Of course the US has some of the best universities but those also cost a lot more to go to, i believe harvard costs more then 70.000 dollars a year, and compared the average university in the US the Dutch universities are just as good, but much cheaper.

      Two things to notice. A lot of people go to collage becouse they can work as students. They don't finish the collage and that becomes a problem for them (no good education) and the goverment that pays your tuition. The second problem is that there is a shortage of people that work on manual jobs. For example I'm an architect. There is a shortage of electricians, plumbers, etc. so they have a bigger salary that me... supply and demand...

I plan to complete my PhD there too and I'll get a monthly stipend of 800 dollars. It will cover my living expenses since the cost of living in my country is pretty low. My friend on the other hand completed his bachelors degree with state funded scholarship for minorities. Then he went to the US for his masters degree which cost him more than 12000 dollars just get the admission. Then every semester if he keeps his grades up he gets his next semsters fees paid by university. But that doesn't cover his living expenses so he has to work at local stores just for food and rent. I hope someday education is free for all and instead of pouring countless dollars in weapons we could help educate our future generations.

    One University fired 12 Janitors( out of a staff of 48 total ) with a salary of $21,000 ( total = $252,000 ) a year and hired an administrator with two assistants to " supervise " the Janitorial staff ( the claim was they would find more efficient ways to do the same cleaning with fewer cleaners ). The new Facilities management Supervisor had a salary of $120,000 and each of his assistants had a salary of $66,000 dollars ( total = $252,000 ) . After about 2 years it was decided that they needed to add 10 janitorial positions since the buildings could not be kept clean and added one more administrative assistant . The number of administrative positions in every department has swollen to such a level that the administrative costs exceeds the costs of all other staffs combined including professors .

    College is still a scam
    For example, Private Universities are expensive as shit, but you graduate faster
    Public Universities, for the Middle Class Students, are still expensive as shit, and takes average 4 years to graduate.
    The reason behind this is that Universities require all students to take General Education Courses, which are completely useless, and full of shit that i already took in School.
    They require at least 80 Units of GE courses,
    and its not like you can skip them, if you don't take them, you don't graduate,
    and you still have to pay for those GE Courses
    While it would be much more cheaper, and faster to graduate, if Students didn't have to take these time consuming bull shit GE courses, and directly take the courses required for their major.
    Companies don't give a shit if you took Art, or Psychology or Philosophy,
    they only care about the Major Related Courses that you took and how well you did in them.
    So why the fuck are we forced to pay, and take years of GE courses,
    when we can take our Major courses directly and graduate in less than 4 years
    its truly just a fucking scam

      Being able to test out of all those courses doesn't fix the underlying problem that these are useless courses to begin with, and if you haven't devoted time and energy to them then they will continue to take more. It's unnecessary to add that extra step. When we devote our resources to irrelevant tasks instead of learning what's useful and important, we lose productivity and efficiency.

    You know you are doing good videos when there are mostly likes. Keep going, don't stop doing this amazing videos. Something i would like to say also is that i don t understand why there are no public universities, like Europe or Argentina. I am studying electromechanical engineering and i only have to pay for my department and food, which is also funded by the state, being something of 80 cents for a full meal. If a country like us can do it, i don t get why a country like USA cant. Greetings from Argentina!

    • @Stanimir7

      The reason USA can't do it is because they are preoccupied spending over half of their budget on killing people(a.k.a. military), rather than improving the lives of people.

    In the US, the faculty members' salaries are not 100% covered by students' tuition. In fact only a portion of their salaries are covered by the university. The other portion of the salary comes out of the research grants they receive.
    This is contrasted with Canadian universities, where the faculty members receive 100% of their salaries from the university, meaning that 100% of their research grants actually go towards research.

But if you get your average back up the next year, it's free again.

      1. How is it decided who goes to university and who doesn't?
      2. How do you keep people from just choosing easy subjects instead of harder ones that might be more in demand in the country?

      I think it’s the fact that government is guaranteeing student loans. The loan businesses give the student loans to the student. The student goes to college hoping to get a job after college. If the student doesent get a job and has to skip payments and ends up defaulting, the government ends up bailing out the insurance companies and the student is stuck with the debt . Colleges know this and can raise their tuition knowing that the government will bail out the insurance companies.
      It’s like free money for them.

    As a retired professor of education and human resource development (training). If you want job skills look at the programs offered by technical/community colleges, the military and trade associations. Look at buying an education/training as investing in a business... think 'return-on-investment' (ROI).

      It's an expression. Black ink = good. Positive on cash. As opposed to red ink = bad. Any time your funds go into the negative. It has to do with ledger keeping or something. Net worth = assets - debt. If net worth is positive, black ink. If net worth is negative, red ink.
      I'm saying that my net worth is positive where nearly all my friends from high school are carrying around a bunch of debt. Which means they're in the red so to speak.

    The cost of college must be talked about in a time value of money sense. The 100k in you pay for college in your 20s will be worth 800k when you are 80 just from inflation. Loading all your most productive population with this kind of debt while they are starting their life is detrimental to both the person and the long term society. These people will buy homes later and have kids later, a great way for the society to be unable to support all the old people that are retiring.

    Isn't increased earnings after college due to most people who are smart going to college? And if you aren't, then you are less likely to get into college.

    • @hexx2211
      @hexx2211 7 років тому +6

      Katzen4u Increased earnings are only gained if you get hired for a job in your field of study (most often business). If you study one subject and don't get a job in that field, it's as if you never graduated at all, because you have no knowledge of that subject, and therefore, you don't earn as much. You don't necessarily have to smart to get into college, but you do have to be smart to get into a GOOD college. I'm pretty sure a community college wouldn't care about your grades as long as you passed and you get a diploma same as everyone else. Meanwhile universities only want students with good grades already because it looks good for them, while a large chunk of them don't even pass because they're all used to leading their class but end up inferior in a school full of nothing but elites.

    That figure for professors' salaries is based ONLY on the minority of profs who are at the highest, most senior, rank of tenured profs ("Full" Professors) -- It is NOT the average salary for all full-time (Assistant, Associate and Full) professors -- and certainly excludes all the part-time instructors (who teach more and more of the courses, and get maybe 5k a course). This madly inflates how much profs actually get paid. The average for full-time profs (excluding coaches) in the US is closer to $70 - $80k. This is like taking the average salary of senior VPs and claiming it is the average salary of administrative staff at a corporation.

    The United States Department of Education (ED or DoEd) (also referred to as the ED for (the) Education Department) is a Cabinet-level department of the United States government. It began operating on May 4, 1980, having been created after the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare was split into the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services by the Department of Education Organization Act, which President Jimmy Carter signed into law on October 17, 1979.
    Since then, costs have spiraled upwards out of control and quality has decreased.

    “College is the single greatest investment you can make in your life.” This statement will become less and less true as time goes on. Big corporations like Google are no longer requiring college degrees as prerequisites for employment and the trades ate experiencing a renaissance in this country, so the number of people earning 6 figures incomes with no college degree will gradually increase every year if trends continue.
