    Correction: We mistakenly highlighted Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis at 4:20 in the video as a for-profit university. Colorado Technical University, one above IUPUI in the list, is the for-profit institution we meant to highlight.
    The best (and also free!) place to explore repayment options for federal student loans is: studentaid.ed....
    There's also the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. If you're employed by a government or certain type of nonprofit the program forgives the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time. studentaid.ed....
    Qualifications for student loan discharge: studentaid.ed....
    Getting out of default: studentaid.ed....
    Higher education is expensive, so people want to get the best deal- a high quality college education at a low cost. This is similar in the way which many for-profit colleges and universities advertised themselves. Many students soon found that the cost of upward mobility through certain for-profit institutions wasn't the answer for them.
    These schools saw a huge jump in enrollment during the 2000s. Fueled by a struggling economy and the expansion of federal financial aid for college, many students saw the advertisements of for-profit schools as attainable and affordable. But almost two decade later, there are new regulations to reign in the predatory schools profiting off student debt. And today, over a dozen for-profit colleges in the US (ITT Tech, Corinthian Colleges, Sanford Brown, and others) have closed their doors for good.

    This is the exact reason I ditched The Art Institute of Seattle. It's predatory. When an instructor asked why we were there, every single person said, "They got back to me first." This was a week into the class, and I started doing research and came to the conclusion that I'd be worse off with a degree and $80,000 than if I cut my losses before accruing debt. I'm so glad I did.
    Also, my web design class was a joke. The entire curriculum was using a free website to learn how to code for web design. So stupid.

    I went to a private not-for-profit school, and in my second year there it went for-profit. I immediately saw an drop in quality in the professors I had, and in the student services like counseling and library services. Only 1 year after they went for-profit, my entire department of professors had quit or been fired, and all the incoming professors were teaching for the first time and were only adjunct and part-time professors. Tuition was more than 12k a semester, and that's without housing, and with a full campus they couldn't even afford to consistently hire professors full time or with teaching accreditation.
    I've been to a state college, a community college, a private-non-profit-turned-private-for-profit, and I'll be transferring my credits to a private non-profit, and I can say from experience that the American school system is only slightly better than its health care system.
    Thank Reagan and Clinton for that.

    some people just need to realize that you shouldn't go to college if you don't have a chance at getting a well paying job. There is a stigma today that you have to go to college to be successful. People fail to see that you need to be smart to be successful and that a college degree will not do anything for you if you are dumb as rocks.

      "People" (many of whom are 16 or 17 years old when they start applying) have been told over and over again by teachers, their parents, politicians, and other influential people that college is the only way to success. It's one of the most pervasive cultural myths out there, and it continues to be spread by people who are products of a different era when college WAS a key to success, or who just want to take advantage of how good it sounds to preach about education (i.e. politicians).
      I don't think the "smart" thing is really true, either. The #1 most helpful thing is having family with connections who can get your food in the door somewhere (which usually means coming from a wealthy background). Trump is actually a prime example of this. I know plenty of people who are smart with college degrees, but they can't get a professional job because all entry-level jobs require 3-5 years of experience on top of a college degree, and the they go to someone's nephew half the time anyway.

    • @airman6937
      @airman6937 8 років тому

      Amphitrite I agree with your first paragraph completely. As for the second, yes it definitely does help to have connections, but you can make buy without them. If you work hard and are an intelligent person who can communicate well, that is better than having connections. So many people toda go to college to study something stupid like gender studies then cry when they have debt. College is an investment, and you need to treat it like one and weigh the risks vs reward.

      ApexPulsar Well, not necessarily. In the everyday vocabulary it is, but the naming convention is very strict. For example, community colleges strictly offer only two-year associate and transferable degrees. Those transferable degrees are transferred to the universities. However, within the campus, you will find buildings designated to the fields of education, usually for the higher level of education, e.g. College of Law, College of Medicine, etc. It is a distinction I wish we Americans would make.

    • @nachomartin471
      @nachomartin471 8 років тому +36

      the system is pretty basic, you have a public university which is free to anyone, and yes, it's flooded with people from border countries and then there's the private university which is a little bit better but in most carreers it isn't justified the cost (huge). The public one has the first year in which people get tested to see their level, if they pass they can get into the university if not they can't, the test is really easy so most of them pass, the problem is the first year of college, most people drop out because either it's too dificult or they don't like the career, so in the second year the people that are smart or like the career get to go through

Back then, she just kept plugging away, paying her dues on a road that eventually lead to the "Supreme Court. Nowadays, she would have used her legal training to sue Stanford for giving her a worthless degree and taking her money under false pretenses.

      Fate Kyougo Some for-profit colleges are extremely deceptive. There are some that are regionally accredited and are "Non-profit" on paper. However, in practice they operate like a for-profit and have little to no accrediting bodies associated with their programs. On the surface they appear to be a completely legit private school. Bellevue University is a prime example of this. I've known plenty of people who graduted from there totally unaware that their degrees have no real accreditation beyond regional.

    I remember how naive I was when I was graduating from high school. I already had my plan. Study music composition. I would knock out my core courses at some university and then transfer to the city university. (Both are non profit and share the same system). But I heard from others that I didn't really need to go to traditional schools and if I was really passionate about learning how to compose, I could go straight to schools that can just give me what I need. I was listening to Pandora and i heard about Full Sail University. I was amazed to find this school so I called them and asked about their program. It was all too good to be true. I live in Texas and I asked about their main campus and they told me that there was a location in Florida? They told me that I was supposed to do a four year degree plan filled with many music theory classes and I was going to have live video chat lessons when I was going to submit my recordings and homework assignments online and right off the bat I just knew I was better off going to a physical school instead of an online school. Of material wise I needed a bunch of software and they were going to provide me a first year package with a brand-new MacBook Pro, a microphone to record, and some really cool beats headphones. They never told me the price and I just kept on thinking that I was going to receive all of this almost for free in a way. Until I finally asked about the tuition cost and the package that they were going to send me and I was floored about the price. It was a more than, $20,000.00?. Everything was super expensive and I just was shocked. how was I supposed to get all that money?! but I was just getting carried away and I hung up and I kept on receiving frequent emails ever since. They wanted to hear more about me and they would be delighted to have me as a student and such. I then realized those schools really are not as good as traditional college. I respect the fact that it can be for people that just have too much in their plate, but today I am studying for management information systems at a college of business at my university and the school really helps you out with the online courses and do give flexible schedules, well, in my experience.

    Paid 30k for an IT degree, and realized degrees are a joke; just another excuse to push conformity and the "ideal" way of life. Made 24k that year at my job in logistics. This year (my third year) I made 60k, worked only 1450 hours, had the best insurance money can buy (for free), a pension and retirement plan (for free) all while ON CALL. I make plans when I want, they ask me when I want to work, and I turn off my phone if I don't want to be bothered. My job has plenty of room to grow and I'm looking at making around 87k this year. (Why are you guys anti-union again?)

    I attended ITT Technical Institute. I was in school there for about a year when they closed down some time in September of 2016. Since then I've been in a back and forth with with lenders that I was pretty much forced to get since financial aid wasn't able to cover the tuition. I should have known from start that it was a bad choice. Still haven't heard anything yet from them. Maybe a good follow up story for this video. @Vox Thanks again. Big fan!

    Did anyone else have all these for profit colleges send over salesmen to their high school senior year to give the sales pitch speech in one of your periods? I remember during my hs senior year in 2013 I had all these for profit spokes people trying to influence people into joining and so called "get started on your future"; schools like, devery, art institute, and everest gave speeches at my classes. HA and they were really persuasive to. I even attended one of their campus tours in 2014, but luckily I found out about this for profit scam and managed to avoid this bullet. If this is what the public grade school system here in the U.S is willing to let in their doors to scam kids, this speaks whole volumes on how our public education system is more in it for indoctrination, and could care less about your future. Disgraceful.

    Anyone who decides to attend a for-profit college should have a realistic view. The education is comparable to any state and even profit colleges. However, it is not going to guarantee a career because NO COLLEGE can. It’s all in what a person does with the education. I think for-profit colleges are better for those over 25 years old and older who have a steady job who is looking to possibly advance in their careers. The schedules are flexible and cater to working adults.

    And they want to do the same for public education and it will just start younger. They've wanted to get rid of public education for years. The wealthy will go to top notch schools as always. And everybody else will get what they can afford. Established private institutions will jack up their prices and "Charter" schools will pop-up to serve everyone else. If the school flops they will close its doors and reopen it under a new name. Economic stratification will be determined before you even graduate high school. School will cater to their corporate sponsors and be used to push products.

    They forgot to mention how none of the programs at this place are accredited. Only some of these schools are actually regionally accredited. School accreditation AND program accreditation are important if you want your degree to actually mean something. Sometimes certain program accreditation is actually required to qualify for certain fields. If you get an engineering degree and the program is not ABET accredited you are probably not going to be able to get an engineering job. Nursing degrees require clinicals and specific accreditations. Yet places like Bellevue university advertise "100% online nursing programs with no clinicals." You could get the degree but it would be totally useless. You would not be able to practice in the field. There are also several shady education programs that dont even qualify you to teach. For-profit colleges are a true scam. Far more of a scam than public colleges. For-profit colleges are one of the most perverted things unchecked capitalism has produced.

  • @Nobody-wo5mb
    @Nobody-wo5mb 8 років тому +1

    Our government is obviously not going to be any help on this for at least four years. High schools need to step up and inform their students about these predatory colleges and the different options they have for higher education or work opportunities. A single career day and an aptitude test isn't going to cut it anymore because our kids are going out there completely uninformed and vulnerable. A comprehensive college and career readiness course should be mandatory for all high school juniors and seniors.

    The issue I have with this is the reason private universities exist is because non-profit universities don't care. They're not trying to recruit more students, they're trying to look prestigious. If non-profit universities called students who started applications or tried to move closer to students I bet they'd get more applicants too. I think the real answer here needs to be somewhere in the middle.

    To say that most Universities and Colleges are 'non-profits' is a matter of semantics. They are mostly all, 'for profit' they just go about making their money in different ways. Typically Universities do it by recruiting more Asian students(whose families abroad pay full price), overcharging for room and board, text books, and having open enrollment policies, not to mention bloated sports programs and the endless solicitation of alumni to donate more money. Many US colleges are a joke.
    But what's scary is that the subprime loan program that caused the 2008 financial crisis parallels closely with the ballooning of college debt created by the myth that everyone should go to college and that everyone should get a degree. It's turned into a Kafka-esque scam. I'm not sure what Trump is going to do, but he can start by reducing federal student loans or restricting the application of those loans to programs that have an empirical chance of producing graduates who get hired. (Sorry film studies and journalism majors). And for profit colleges like devry should all be closed. Education is not a widget.
    The next step would be to open more trade schools and recognize the importance of having a strong blue collar workforce in society. We need people to build new infrastructure and repair the old. We need people to make and fix things with their hands. This idea that the future will be fully automated is cultish in it's arrogance.

    I went to one, and I think I kind of lucked out. They were pretty aggressive with recruiting, and I think others that went to traditional schools got a more thorough education. My school was very focused on making us employable and preparing us for how to get and stay hired. I got a job in my field before I even graduated because my instructor knew people in the field, and I can pick up what I would have learned at a traditional school as I go. My goal was to get a career, and I got what I paid for.
