My only criticism - WHY didn't he cure the aspirating. It spoils it for me. I've only ever heard recordings of him, but perhaps he was more lyric than belcanto & would find it difficult
I literally can’t hear him taking a breath. Not sure what you mean by his aspirating. Do you mean his lisp? If so, I agree - it’s easier to hear in his studio recordings than live, and it can be distracting for me.
@@singermanz No I meant he adds an H to every note each time he does a coloratura run ( the runs of rapid notes); it is frowned upon by the best Bel canto singers & discouraged by the best teachers He adds them in many places, Ernani he sings as Hernando.
@@ifmusicbethefoodofloveegc986 ah I get it. It may be frowned upon by today’s conservatory teachers, but in the 1960s, and for Corelli who spent several summers studying with Lauri-Volpi and who was raised on the sounds of Caruso and Gigli, this was an Italian style in their singing that most likely came from street singers, embodied in Caruso, and exaggerated by Gigli and used by virtually every italian tenor worth his weight until the 1960s, with the rise of Callas and her elite artistry and the matching high artistic demands of conductors. For me, the bottom line is that Ernani is a spinto role with bel canto demands. Today you either get a leggiero who doesn’t have the weight to compete with the larger orchestration, or you get a mediocre spinto (no really great ones today) who usually comes with a slower, and often wider vibrato, unclear phrasing, and less high notes. With Corelli, we get the best possible from both worlds - a technique that can stand up to Bellini’s demands, the power required to match the orchestration, and phrasing style that, if nothing else, is completely italianate at its core.
@@singermanz I think you're right, in the main & my only criticism was adding an H where none was written! I love the voice & wish I could have heard him live. As a child, my parents took me to the Royal Opera House to hear Callas; well past her best by then, but what a wonderful technique she had.

È strano...il personaggio calzava bene a Laurivolpi....
I thought Corelli was a terrific Ernani as was MDM.
