One of the most infamous espers to find inside the crystal labyrinth. Not only was it the most confusing maze to navigate in the history of final fantasy games but with no map at all which made it a tougher nightmare and when you finally got to the esper it was also the challenge of beating it unless you knew the strat combos to beating it. This was one hard fight but my god it is worth it once you finally cleared the crystal.

I loved how in the remaster, they put Excalibur at the Crystal Peak so you're forced to fight Ultima in order to walk away with the sword. Makes sense because the weapon is just so busted in the remaster, since there's no longer a 9999 damage cap.
Wow I’ve seen this boss fight many times, but I never realized she had her eyes open in the beginning. Now that it’s HD it’s much more clearer.
I thought the only time she did open them was during her final attack. She’s always been my favorite esper so it’s a nice little fun fact after all these years.
I remember when I finally find out Ultima after more than 4 hours lost on this dungeon, and with my soul broken with no hope left, Ultima appears as a boss to ruin the last thing that I have as a reputation... It was a damn hard battle, I lose my shit fighting against Ultima, and after defeating her, my ass only wanted to find a save game and leave that mess once and for all.
LOL omg YOU AND ME BOTH! I just commented practically the same thing. I was frustrated about getting lost in this maze, to the point that when crystal save point appeared I ignored it and went on ahead only to get bitch slapped by fucking Ultima. I was so fucking lucky to have survived her murdering ass. After that, I saved at every day save point because it was just too close of a call.
i fucking hated this dungeon with a passion absolutely confusing. I didnt even know she was down there when i ran into her.

I was most proud of myself while playing this game. I found a lot of these additional espers by accident, especially Ultima and the secret weapon that deals holy damage. I read up on how to get that weapon afterwards and learned it was a very low percentage drop. so i was very lucky to have gotten it on the first run. And when I went head to head with Ultima I was so fucking glad when it was over because I hadn't saved the game, thinking there was only a big treasure at the top of the tier, never imagining it was an Esper fight. FML.

At 7:11 it says trophy earned "High Summoner". Is this a reference to FFX?
The only reason I won this battle was that my healer had the reverse status effect as well as the accessory that absorbs holy magic. I was 75% of the way through the fight before I realized that the healer was taking no damage from any source.
I didn't know Vaan drank captain Morgan because he sure does know how to hold the pose. 7:15.

I remember accidentally meeting her while searching excalibur in the original version. Totally underpowered and wipe my group everytime she cast holyja.

The rare stuff some of the bosses have requre a few resets due the rare treasure they got on em.
It felt sooo good to finally beat Ultima after she defeated me over 50x. But it was worth it. Great memories none the less.
I remember this during the OG version.
Ultima was relatively easier compared to Zodiark. The only challenge, navigating thru The Grand Crystal without a map. Had to get a couple of paper and draw every area I went to so I have idea where I was going and was gate needs to be unlocked.
I love the battle with her so much that I kept a saved file just to keep on fighting her whenever I want to.
IMO, FFXII was the last FF entry in the series that lived to its legacy of being "Final Fantasy"
I also kept some save files for some boss that I love to fight, like Yiazmat. Ultima also interesting too, might try to keep it now for her in AetherSX2.

I love playing the original release though, not the IZJS.
Yiazmat is one hell of a fight due to 50M HP, but Omega is much annoying due to his attack which will kill you in 2 hits.

I wonder what happened between FFXII and Tactics, because the corruption of the Espers and their transformation into Lucavis is something I've always thought about
Well I do think that the Espers have some intelligence and will because they rebelled against the Occuria in FF12. They thought they were as powerful as the gods themselves so they fought them, but in the end they lost. Also, all except Zodiark and Ultima are referred to as Scions of Darkness. Maybe they were corrupted by the Mists or the Dark :P Who knows.
They were always called Scions of Darkness. There are two sets of Espers, light and darkness, excluding Ultima and Zodiark.
Yea I meant the 11 others that are playable in the game :D They were made in opposition of the Scions of Light (which each bear a hindu name I think).
the espers r not corrupted by the mist. they r the source of the mist.
amazo88 wrong. very wrong. they aren't the source of the mist as the mist is actually natural energy in Ivalice. similar to the Lifestream of final fantasy 7. check the lore before you say stupid things like that :P

I went into this place trying to get Hastega, Shellga, and Excalibur. Didn't realize Ultima was in the same room as the weapon and she completely wiped me even I wandered in. Thankfully, I'd saved and I retried with a proper strategy in mind, beating her with all my characters dead save for Fran, Ashe, and Reddas.

FF6 - 12 is the golden age of FF imo. This was the last masterpiece we got from the series. I hope 16 will be as good.

She’s angelic but she’s still scary idk why
Ultima is actually some kind of fallen angel in Ivalice lore. She appears as angel in other FF titles but changes to more demonic forms later on. That's why she can also use higher holy spells.
The trick to easily defeating ultima is by equipping a bangle that absorbs light damage. Her magical attacks will heal you but you still have to worry about there Physical damage.
It doesn’t absorb not in zodiac age at least
White mask absorbs Holy and so does Sage’s Ring iirc
Reverse will really caught you off guard if you are not quick!

once you take it, it will not respond and its 100% Excalibur
useful for some post game superbosses like Hell Wyrm
One gripe - you should have equipped your characters w/ Dark Weapons. Would've made killing Ultima easier.
OMEGA MARK XIII & Ultima being under there was a love hate relationship.
Loved tryna get to end game stuff before the end game. Felt like a hella of an accomplishment

I played this a few months ago and I was honestly so amazed at myself I beat her by accident lmao. I was drunk and watching something on UA-cam and all of a sudden it cuts to her defeat cutscene. And I know it was pure dumb luck.

Vann: Shikari/Foebreaker
Penelo: Monk/Black Mage
Balthier: Machinist/White Mage
Fran: Archer/Red Battlemage
Basch: Uhlan/Time Battlemage
Amalia: Bushi/Knight
This is the best combination in my opinion. Notice that I am able to use ALL of the Zodiac jobs while all of these jobs complement each other AND work well with the characters that they are assigned to.
I never once fought Ultima without using the Nihopalaoa gambit trick.
I like traveling to the great crystal so much lore to find

I defeated ultima with my all my players under level 53 ,took 2 hours ,healing every second of the fight and slowly chipped away at her hp lol
I found all of these additional espers looking thru the internet. It cost me so much work and lots of hours, but I did it. It was hard. I don't want to do it ever again. This is something you do it once. Great game.
I'm working on my fourth time. Game is amazing, but, really, the more you do it, the easier it is. Except ultima, that's the only one I have problems with, because the map is confusing, but with a proper guide, it isn't too bad

Shell isn't the issue because Holyja can inflict reverse. She will cast healing spells on you with it and you will most likely just die from it.

I'm definitely going to be re-buying this game when I get the chance. I never got to this part, wasn't able to get past Yzasnaevhnsdjvnk(whatever the fuck his name is lol). I'm glad thre is more after him though, motivates me to actually overcome it. I remember accidentally stumbling across the hell wyrm. It was more curiosity, because there didn't seem to be a way to get to him. I was running around aimlessly trying to figure out what the secret was and accidentally activated the way to his lair, purely by dumb luck. So being, brave I said fuck it. And my jaw dropped when I saw his health bar show up. It only took m on try to beat him, but I almost died several. It took me two and a half hours of on-the-edge of my sat focus to pull it off.

95onimusha yeah, i defeated her when my party was level 48, running away from all the monsters and a lot of ethers and phoenix downs
I feel like Square enix nerfed all the bosses in the game. And in exchange they buffed the normal monsters I dont know
@Ze TheGame agreed. I kinda like this version than original. Job system make it much more fun to create your own way of fight and char building. It's remind me of FF tactic which is my favorite FF.
I remember how years ago that without the bradygames FF XII guide book I would've been lost inside of the crystal and never would've beaten Ultima.

Gambits set up to spam ethers and spam heals during this fight is a dumb idea. I did this at half your level with less difficulties because I just had them set to attack and controlled the fight. Dumbfiring it endgame with max chars kind of works I guess.
Indeed. An Esunaga gambit is not a bad idea either, simply because of Reverse.
So easy in the 50’s with a ribbon RM spamming Darkga. Absorb or half holy catch the reverse in time, win.

Why did you only have one team? This is why you work everyone equally so that you have two teams. If he would have trained everyone equally this fight would have been shorter cause he would have had a whole fresh team to use when it got rough. Js
What's the fun in that? Some people are just too lazy in leveling the last 3 when the first 3 are your main focus. Buying equipment for all 6 before you reach the end game riches is difficult, ya know. Unless you grind for hours until you are just too strong to be challenged.

The thing i always hated about final fantasy games was that these bosses were so unbeatable without cheating or spam training in regular game play, that by the time you were actually strong enough to beat them the game was already long over. It's like that with most games though, you never get any of the strongest weapons or gear in regular game play and you can never use them

@Ze TheGame i always play on active on every ff. Ive done everything but all the judges on the final floor. That impossible on active unless you got a bunch of dark matter type items.

Everyone in my party, lvl 70ish, is getting one shot (9999 hp) by her special attack. Over and over, nobody survives to cast raise or dispel or anything for that matter. It's not reverse killing me, it's instant death from her. WTF is going on?

The Ocuria are supposedly stronger than the espers but the espers definitely look cooler.
(Technically I think in the lore Zodiark is stronger than the Ocuria. but didn't help in the rebellion against the Ocuria at all.)
