I simply don't see the same kind of xenophobia in Cambodia that is common all over Thailand. Thai Immigration does everything it can to discourage foreigners from living there. You don't see the same dynamic in Cambodia.

This video was so darn good!! First off Ryan you look tired. I hope your feeling okay! Second Sivi was so kind to be honest about his experience with expats! His view about people teaching English who don’t have a certificate is spot on. Even as an American that was always my first thought and hoped people would not take advantage of that. My husband and I watch a lot of vlogs about cambodia/Thailand and one thing I find super disrespectful is when expats use the word “Cheap”to describe what they can get for their money. Sivi was spot on when expats need to be more respectful on what they say in a country you are being graced to spend your life in!!

Yes! 👏On one of my travels abroad (not Asia), I was pleasantly surprised about how cheap a meal was. I was talking to a local, saying "Wow! I can't believe this meal was only $2.50 USD!" and I was quickly put in my place and reminded that what is cheap to me is expensive for the locals and how I shouldn't say things like that out loud. That was a good lesson for me and a reminder not to be ignorant of the hardships of others in the countries I'm visiting.

I thought it was an excellent interview, and was particularly pleased that Sivi speaks English so well. I am from Canada and decided after living in Japan for 28 years to go to Cambodia, after making a visit there in 2004.I moved here November l, 2007 and have been here ever since--so almost 17 years. I've enjoyed the culture and the people. By the way I am a qualified teacher and have been teaching every level from Kindergarten to university. Still teaching at 75.

From my point of view, it's amusing. People here generally love animals, but not to that extend. Most people would turn their nose at expats kissing their pets.
Traditionally, pets were raised to serve a household purpose. Before Khmer Rouge, in the 60s, we were influenced by a lot of western value, so pets were at the time were also becoming part of the family. After Khmer Rouge, we were poor, hungry and afraid of more conflicts, and pets were extra mouth to feed, so we reverted back to traditional value where pets are raised for their usefulness. You'll probably find that many people who lived through the regime to have that kind of mindset.
But the younger generations of the internet era are much more pet friendly thanks to all the cat videos.

Being an US citizen, we don’t even have that condition of currency in circulation here in the states. We tried to pay a breakfast tab of $5.25 with a $10 USD note. The bill was not ripped it was flat, but it wasn’t crisp and I had fully intended. I’m just leaving the change as a tip however, they would not accept the bill. Then we had gone to an exchange location for Currency and when I gave them a $20 bill there was a small tear into one of the edges of the dollar and they only gave me credit for $19 instead of $20. Why is this country so hell-bent on having only brand new USD dollars in circulation. But the Cambodian currency itself is just like any other paper currency is beat up torn and dirty.

Now add on the growing number of expats. More people, more demand for food and housing and then you have to also look at the job market. What do you think that will do to the prices? It would go up, wouldn't it? Who do you think will be at a disadvantage? If the idea of a retirement visa is so good, why don't developed countries like the U.S. have it? Cambodia needs to find a way to rely less on tourism. Overtourism is not helping the country. Why do you think they had to install a floating bridge to Angkor Wat? From certain online websites catering to English-speaking foreigners, expats boldly and pejoratively are dismissive towards Cambodians in general, even ethnic Japanese staying/living in Cambodia have adopted the expats' disrespectful behavior towards the inhabitants of Cambodia. Luckily, most Cambodians do not speak English at a higher level, and they are not aware of how rude these foreign expats say about them behind their backs. It is for the better that the Cambodians associate with their traditional Chinese-speaking foreigners instead since they are role models even in the Western countries.

I've heard ethnic Cham, Bunong, Lao, Chinese, etc. who weren't even born in Cambodia refer to themselves as Khmer because that is the culture they are familiar with, the culture they grew up with. If I'm not mistaken, Sihanouk wanted to promote solidarity within the country and didn't want to classify people by ethnicity. People were being identified based on region. That's why Khmer Islam replaced Cham. But like Scham explained, the word Cambodia/Cambodian doesn't exist in Khmer language. So if someone was born, raised in Cambodia and/or are culturally Khmer then they are Khmer.

@@ellesocal6121 We're not confused about what is referred to as Cambodia, Cambodian and Khmer. We're saying Cambodian isn't derived from the Khmer language. We refer to each other as Khmer and for the sake of consistency, would prefer to be called Khmer. Not Khmer amongst ourselves and then Cambodian elsewhere. It wasn't too long ago that Cambodia was once known as Kampuchea. Maybe it will go through another name change in the future like how Burma was changed to Myanmar or Turkey changing the spelling to Turkiye. Khmer have gone through cycles of reclaiming our roots. For example, Princess Kossamak redesigned the costumes for the dance troupe, going back to traditional Khmer and removing Thai influence. And then during the French colonial times when Khmer resisted French influence to conserve Khmer tradition and language. This is when the first Khmer dictionary was compiled and printed. Now that the country is in a better place than it was 20 years ago, it's going through another cycle of cultural preservation which is why you're seeing this type of talk taking place again. The current prime minster is getting up in age and new leadership is on the horizon. I think we'll see some recurring themes, renewed nationalism similar to what was happening before, during and immediately after the time the country gained independence from France.
