  • Oceans cover 71% of the planet and are the source of life on Earth. Over a billion people, including some of the poorest in the world, depend on the oceans and wild seafood for survival. But our blue planet is under threat. Each day we remove more than the oceans can replenish. We are draining our oceans of life and protein for a hungry planet.
The good news is that our oceans are astoundingly resilient. Contrary to popular belief, the sea is not ungoverned. Ten countries control most of the world's wild seafood catch. Oceana has won critical policy victories in many of these countries, protecting more than a million square miles of ocean.
We can turn things around if we focus on three goals: ending overfishing, controlling bycatch and protecting our ocean nurseries. Help us ensure that the oceans remain bountiful and beautiful for generations to come. Join Oceana today.

The ocean has helped us in our time of need. It's time to help the thing that has helped us from the beginning!

"Each day we remove more than the oceans can replenish"
Will we learn to curb our greed and waste, our cruel harvesting practices and our pollution, in time?
Thankyou Oceana for your efforts. It may be too late though to change my mind about being vegetarian.

Man is a terrible predator and I agree that we need to stop overbreeding ourselves and protect the other innocent beings on this earth.

Thank you! Critical habitat - critical times. We are probably the last generations who still can take these actions before the systems collapse entirely.

It's too bad that greed exists. Man is the only animal that kills more than he can eat.

WE NEED TO PROTECT OUR OCEANS BY ENDING OVERFISHING, CONTROLLING BYCATCH, AND PROTECTING OUR OCEAN NURSERIES. IF WE DON'T MANY PEOPLE WHO DEPEND ON THE OCEN FOR FOOD WILL DIE IN THE COMING YEARS. THIS IS A SERIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM!!!!

I don't know who the ten (10) countries are - US, Russia, China, Japan - but unless they all come together and begin saying YES, we can and will make a difference right now, today, instead of NO today is more important than tomorrow our oceans are doomed. We must all remember that; "Our world is not inherited from our forefathers but borrowed from our future generations." Don and I CAN! :-))

What I really want to comment about is acidic ocean (8th from top over at right). I have read posts on other sites claiming that if you run a small DC electric current through sea water, calcium carbonate will precipitate at the anode. I am sure this is technically feasible. What I want to know is -- using a wind turbine to generate the DC current, how much does it cost per ton of either carbon or CO2 captured and stored as calcium carbonate?

I think something will happen soon enough for us, depletion of resources, natural disaster unlike we've seen, or mass starvation and / or mass genocide, I think one of these factors is likely to reduce the human population significantly if we don't pull our act together.

The Oceans are explored less than outer space! We have no reall and concrete knowledge of the expanses of food supplies from the oceans. When we destroy our oceans we will drive the last nail into our coffins. There are hosts of food solutions providing we do not destroy the oceans with oil and other destructive exploration. Save the oceans and save humankind!

Global Thermostat claims that given enough volume to achieve economies of scale, they can get the cost to capture CO2 down to $25/ton of CO2. From The Future of Enhanced Geothermal Systems, I gather that CO2 can be stored in an Enhanced Geothermal System for $8/ton, making total cost to capture and store of $33/ton of CO2 = $121/ton of carbon.

Umph, to be more precise we currently don't have 8 billion humans. For June 1 2013 there were about 7, 01 billion people on our planet. And that, I belive, is also too much. Why don't we just stop breeding?

How would be a great video. With such greed going on worldwide, it looks impossible without global cooperation. Some very hard questions must be asked, but who will do this?, Will they have the power required to make a difference. Can they muster global accounts and enforce a good outcome without conflict. Things have to change, we all must see this without greed leading our way. The good times must be paid for, as much as we have been lavish and greedy, I suspect the resurrection of our ocean's bounty will be painful.

Talk to the Catholics and Republicans about the birth control options that they keep trying to deny women. With effective birth control and women's choice, we can keep the birth rate at acceptable levels.

I think if just make fish farms would be nice, what kind of damage desire to Sea, shld be the Big Bomb Story >|< the bomb looks smthg like this, but i think it is a Failed Bombing, the Bomb crack The Casing and It(Casing) became a Shield Instead, causing like No War Motive in this Country. The Casing Is a Cement, is Why. I am thinking how I Can Work Fishing Tuna Safely without Swordfish? I heard it is actually in this Country. Why they(Swordfish) naturally do not come near Beach anyway? 1 Big/Giant Tuna can be $10k+ easily. Like rent boat and come back and sell immediately?
