When most people think of fishing, we imagine relaxing in a boat and patiently reeling in the day’s catch. But modern industrial fishing -- the kind that stocks our grocery shelves -- looks more like warfare. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Jennifer Jacquet explain overfishing and its effects on ecosystems, food security, jobs, economies, and coastal cultures.

If this keeps up, the phrase "There's a lot of fish in the sea" is gonna have the opposite meaning.
Best comment here by far.

Also worth mentioning, roughly half of all food caught, raised and farmed for the American market ends up in landfills. The US has a fraction of the worlds population, yet "consumes" and throws away enough food to feed much of the rest of the world. Recreational fishing regulations in America also causes as much harm as it does good. Rather than accepting whatever size is caught, regulations result in many fish having to be thrown back to die and more caught to fit regulations and limits.
Maya Dog anything I dont eat gets composted and put back in the ground. Im only one man though.
Maya Dog recreational fishing causes negligible harm to the environment, its commercial fishing that has a real effect. The most humane and sustainable meat you can get is fish caught recreationally on rod and reel.
We do too, weve a large compost pile and worm ranch.
@@XxScArEcRoWxX1 Kudos for composting. Everyone who can should also do it. It significantly reduces the methane that would otherwise be produced in landfills.
@@mayadog2497 Kudos. I do too. I am also vegan, so I don't buy fish. I get my Omege 3 from ground flax seeds, walnuts, and algae based supplements. The only reason fish have Omega 3 is from eating algae, or other fish who do so.

What about ocean acidification? Can you guys do a video about that in the future?
Thanks :)
I fly fish for Atlantic Salmon in Eastern Canada (Gaspe, Quebec region) and I cannot agree more. The Atlantic Salmon population has been devastated by overfishing in the open ocean off Greenland and Iceland. As the video said commercial fishing doesn't respect boarders. So when Salmon come back to spawn there are less and less annually. Coastal communities, Native Americans, and most of all the Salmon population have been hurt severely.
The reason I watch this video is because I watched a documentary of Netflix about the same issue. The documentary called Seaspiracy . The current consequence of commercial fishing is terrifyingly devastating. I highly recommend that documentary for anyone who want to know about what the ocean has been suffering and anyone loving this plannet.
WWF and Greenpeace have published guides for consumers to know which fish is still "okay to eat". I would really recommend them (there are apps too) because we as customers determine the demand on certain fish species. And the demand determines the supply!
why not just eat no fish at all? These diet guidelines put out by greenpeace or the ADA are created in regards to "what are people most likely going to follow", not "what is actually the healthiest/most sustainable way". There is probably almost no fish "ok to eat" when it comes to health and sustainability. So why not just stop eating them.
Props to you though for at least caring about your environment :)
Jonas Bergner I actually don't eat meat ^^ but I understand if people don't want to 'go all the way' and if everyone would just care a little bit more we could really make a difference. And there are methods that allow sustainable fishing! I think a huge problem is not that people eat fish but with how little awareness they do. Tuna pizza and tuna everything without questioning where it's coming from. If we would stick to less but then good fish (same with meat in my opinion) we wouldn't have that problem
That is very true!
These may not be the best sources, because these are companies that are sponsored with companies that profit from an unsustainable form of food manufacturing. I never liked fish so I avoid it completely. I just recommend doing research on fish companies that are truly sustainable. But I would also suggest just limiting your intake significantly, it would be much better imo
Couldn't agree more :)
what is missing is Understanding of how things are interconnected & real Compassion in our heart
It's funny how us Humans haven't fully discovered the ocean
Or even gone deep sea
But we're still killing them down there
So, basically, what we're doing is akin to a bludgeon.

Apart from making this great educational animations, you must also tell people what to do, in order to change something!
Sad thing is that most people won't listen.
There’s too much microplastics in the ocean, leaking into rivers. I wouldn’t even try fishing anymore.
@Morgan Shepherd That’s the dumbest solution I have ever heard. Just because you stop supporting a local market or even huge markets doesn’t stop the fact that they are overfishing. People need to stand up to the government to set laws and regulations.
Reduce or eliminate fish consumption from your diet, and support reform at the local level if you live in the U.S. Local government laws lead to federal passage historically so focus on advocating safer and sustainable industry in your community.
Calling businesses that you want to support: I love your products but I would really like to see a vegan option. I hope you can accommodate these options for a healthier ocean so I can continue to buy your outstanding products :).
Well they are not activist group and we all know telling what to do can cross some rich people that they might offend.
I'm now in my undergrad study of marine science and seeing the knowledges I learn in my classes now are dying is very upsetting. 😢 Please human, change. for a better ocean. So my friends and I can learn and protect them in the future.
They won't change, it's greed that lets them keep doing it.
Set limits for entire world, fish farms, clean lakes, rivers, oceans, protect the environment. UN should stress importance of
of loss of fish; for instance whales.
Un is just a watch dog.
lol what a joke UN! , If they were what they are claiming to be , there wouldn't be any wars or climate change ( human caused).
Well that will never happen until its too late, those people care too much about making profit
Honestly I love this channel. The video ended with ''We need to stop overfishing'', and TED-Ed very rarely ends a video with such a blunt and direct statement, so this one time when they do it, it makes it sound much more urgent and important. I wonder if they did it on porpuse.
China: Nah! We dont hear anything.
The Potato Faith no
Nah! Wee dunt heer any-ting. -_-
Anything we do in the US is pretty much irrelevant considering the monumental damage caused by China, same for pollution as well.
Toshow 10 we pollute more than china which was more than double out population. What we do is extremely relevant
Wrong China has double the CO2 emissions of the US with an exponentially larger population
Thank you for instead of just saying “ fishing bad”, talking about ways to conserve and help populations recover
It doesn't mean every form of fishing is bad. In my country (Netherlands) fishing is very regulated and they invested tons money for innovative electric pulse fishing where fish is led into the nets with electric pulses instead of tickler chains so there's almost no damage to the sea floor and almost no unwanted bycatch. Green Peace still try to block them though, by throwing large boulders into the sea which damage the fishing nets. Those damaged fishing nets stay on the sea floor and catch all sorts of fish who die without any purpose. That's why I'm a little sarcastic when watching these video's. I know in other parts of the world overfishing is a real deal but still.
matroosoft the problem is that it's MOST countries. The netherlands are a small country too.
How does using electric pulses prevent bycatch?
It only attract certain types of fish
matroosoft I
So your reasoning is this.. and correct me if i am wrong, but you are sarcastic to this video, because it shares sort of a similar agenda as greenpeace who destroys your fishing nets?
I don't eat seafood because of this. I already knew back as early as 2004 that our ocean is delicate and we were catching way too many fish. Since then I've stopped consuming any type of seafood and share my knowledge with others who are willing to limit their intake of seafood. I just feel way too guilty when my friends try to get me to partake in sushi.

Studies say that by 2048 it will
Anton, you did such a great job animating this. Great artwork
That is uplifting. ..Wonder why people have to eat a fish at all
All food has to grow and more humans means their will eventually be a deficit as things won't be able to grow fast enough , it's debated weather the world will even be able to sustain a pop of 11 billion of which the pop will about be 10 million in 30 years which will just create more starving than there already is.
The worst part is that we don't consume all the fishes we catch because we throw the vast majority away
the government need to control how many fish you can catch in a month
+LagiNaLangAko23 You get fined a large amount and the dead fish are sold by the government so that you don't earn any money from them.
Antomy Yes, more government control is always the answer.....

The problem isn't really people CONSUMING the fish, weather you're vegan or not. The problem is how fishermen are OVERfishing and how other fish are being killed leaving hem to waste when they're unwanted. They just need to be limited when it comes to fishing.

"COD population declined in 1950"
Wow, so many quit COD that early.

Basic answer: "it might"
Seafood is my favorite. Living on the coast I used to eat it multiple times daily. Fresh Lobster, snow crab, ahi tuna, cod, salmon, oysters, scallops..i niavely figured that the market would maintain sustainability by price and that if i could afford it that I wasn’t causing any harm.. I now save these things for more special occasions and only eat sustainable seafood. I have developed a huge taste for alaskan pollock, farmed shrimp and mussels, sardines, and imitation crab. If you are creative in the kitchen you can make incredible culinary creations with these ingredients. Its not ideal, but imagine a world without seafood for our grandchildren.. thats the reality.

No wonder deep sea fish stay in the deep.
Eat fast? What lol what’s wrong with eating slow
This is why I despise multi-industrial fishing companies. They lobby the government to make the laws favor them. Charter boats and industries catch fish by the POUNDS, while recreational fishermen and locals are only allowed one fish or even none all together.

The real issue isn't overfishing, it's the fact that people aren't willing to accept that this is happening. Pretty soon, people won't be able to turn to ignorance anymore, because the truth will be staring them in the face when our oceans are irreversibly destroyed.
"Oh well, plenty of fish in the sea."

Dezta93 how and why?
Convincing people to change their consumption habits isn't practical. What's practical is if scientists are able to take DNA from the organic fish material and then use the DNA to create fish meat that would be grown inside test tubes. If enough fish meat is created from test tubes, it could replace most of the traditional fisheries.
Uhhh so you help to protect fish in the sea by stopping a men from reeling in some fishes in the lake. Wow you just totally ruined his day.

Vegan life is humane
+Austin Yeah, how annoying. I hate it when people think about anything other than their own stubbornness, considering that there are vegan alternatives to seafood/other animal products which taste the exact same. So annoying when people try to stop climate change, world hunger, and try to save water and their own health.
+snowdudelester You just proved his point though. If people want to be vegan they'll be vegan, but saying "Vegan life is humane" isn't going to change my opinion on how tasty my chicken nuggets were last night. It's quite annoying hearing people flaunt that they eat plants anytime an animal issue comes up. And why are you comparing them saying it's annoying to people stopping climate change and water issues? Those are completely separate issues. Also, veganism is arguably less healthy than keeping a balanced diet of plants and meat.
Tell that to the slaves that work on the fields for "bio fruits/vegetables" because they´re cheaper workers than regular, legal workers.
Tell that the people that have a severe nut allergy and would die if they´d eat or drink a substitute based on almond or any other kind of nut.
Tell that to the thousands of insects that die because of monoculture fields.
If done right, animals don´t need to suffer when they get killed for meat. The problem is that too many people DEMAND to have a steak every single day. A lot has to change in the food industry and every person can help by reducing the amount of meat they consume, by buying from local farmers etc.
But saying meat eaters are monster or that only vegan life is humane is wrong.
