My mom has late stage cancer. We weren’t expecting her diagnosis; she went in for an unrelated surgery and they found a huge mass all tangled in her abdomen. That night, after not eating all day, my dad and I went to get something to eat, next to the hospital. I gave him my headphones and had him listen to this. He just... needed a minute. He had just had to go into the room the love of his life was in and tell her she had cancer and it was bad. On top of a chronic illness that would have eventually killed her regardless.
I wanted a song that he could just listen to, not try to pick out each word, not try to analyze, but just experience. He needed a moment. We had to get back quickly, so I had to choose one song for him to just zone out to while he ate (I still couldn’t eat). I’ll always remember this song as being something that helped comfort him, as it had comforted me in my nerves before her surgery.
That was January. They wouldn’t let her start chemo until the incision healed and infection (staph, how fun) kept that from happening. She’s finally getting treatment, chemo, Monday.
The cancer’s had a year to play and do its work. I don’t know if we can make up lost ground and fix this, buy her a few years to watch my brother become a doctor and to see us both get married, to maybe become a grandmother. But we’re certainly going to try. I’m sure this song will be a comfort many times before all is said and done.

It's exactly like someone said before in the comments: it's the kind of music you just experience, not listen or analyze. This song has helped me, too, through some of the toughest moments of my life. So yeah, the water did take the weight from me. Being born in a city by the sea, I'm drawn to it on a deeper level. Even as a kid it meant so much more to me than the usual summer entertainment version. Whenever I listen to this song, the mood becomes bittersweet. I feel like I want to cry, because it brings back memories that I tried so hard to distance myself from, but, at the same time, it gives me some sort of reassurance that someone understands me and it's ok to feel the way I feel. So my tears are both tears of joy and sorrow.

It is kind of miraculous, right? When my mom got diagnosed with cancer (late stage) out of the blue, during unrelated surgery, my dad and I went to get some food before he sort of kept vigil in her hospital room that night, and I could tell he just needed to get away from everything and unplug a minute. But we had to get back to the hospital soon, because they’d close the entrances except the ER and we’d have a long cold walk from where we’d have to park. So I picked this as the one song I had time to show him while he ate, just handed over my big over the ear headphones and sat (I couldn’t eat) while he collected himself to deal with the next 12 hours. I think I’ll always remember this song for that, and be grateful that it helped make that night a little less horrific.
Idk anyone who understands the feel of this music. Seems to me that only people who have felt so much pain but still have a strong sense of beauty for life and in the little things can really get it. I seek for this kind of music when i need to feel peace and healing. Thank you!

Before I stopped feeling anything at all, I used to feel like that for a girl as well. I too wanted to dance to a song like that with her, The Night We Met by Lord Huron. Every day for almost 3 years I was burning on the inside, every day I'd see her and the most I was able to do was regular talk about studies, homework, weather, friends...
I somehow, stupidly convinced myself that not talking to her about my feelings was better than (possible)rejection. Years went by, school ended, never saw her after that... I never spoke to her... some time has passed but the "what if?" never left my brain, to this day it's one of my biggest regrets. Don't make the same mistake, the pain of rejection, if you even get rejected, will last months at most...the regret of not acting will never go away.
