One of the most dramatic and memorable rooms at Althorp is the Prince of Wales bedroom, named in honour of Edward, Prince Of Wales (Queen Victoria's eldest son and heir) following his visit to the estate in 1863. We're embarking on a major renovation that will peel back some of the more modern elements of the room, returning it to the way it looked over a century ago.

Considering the current Prince of Wales has Spencer lineage, this is particularly poignant ❤️

I do not envy any of you who live in these ancestral homes but I truly admire your passion and dedication to wanting to preserve this for the Spencer family and all who want to visit. What a great link to have the Earls nephew, the current Prince of Wales come and stay in this room with the next Prince of Wales. For the rest of time the Prince of Wales will be related to the Spencers!

My home in Vermont, sits in 25 acres and was built in the mid 1700s. The barn is even old. The yearly cost can be burdensome, so I can’t begin to imagine, what you go through. Sometimes you don’t find a problem until it becomes a larger problem! God bless yiu!

What an incredible room. I love how you point out the layers of later decoration and remodels that you will change to go back to a more authentic 19th Century look. The wall fabric is so lush, and my favorite color. I especially enjoy seeing paintings of the Spencer ancestors in your videos, where we can see certain features that were passed down to your husband and his late sister. Thank you for sharing a look into your family legacy.

This is so interesting, because people don't really understand what goes into just the upkeep of these, basically stone houses, you know, just to maintain it, the hoops you jump thru, the inceptions because *it's a grade 1,2 3 whatever building! It's takes a lot of time and a great deal of money and specialized work!

As for fabrics being too costly to replicate - Scalamandre or another ultra luxe designer fabric company would surely be interested in recreating the historical Spencer 1508 fabrics for the renovations and, not incidentally, for sale to the public - this could prove profitable for the manufacturer as well as the Spencers. Beyond that, is there a grant available for restoration of historic houses that could cover the cost of replicating the upholstery fabrics? It seems a shame to do all that difficult historical renovation only to have to settle for an inaccurate fabric.

I love old houses and their stories.. it’s so fortunate that plumbing leak was not more to the left, which could have ruined that wonderful painting. Wondering if a bedroom would have been carpeted like that? To me, a wooden floor seems more historically accurate, but I don’t really know.

This is actually my favorite room that Ive seen at Althorp. Ive always loved the bed fabric. Pricey or not, you should definitely get the fabric recreated. These rooms look best when all the furniture fabrics match plus, let's be honest, get it reproduced now and save it somewhere, you will need to redo the bed eventually anyway. If not, don't do something boring for the sofa etc, maybe use Scalamandre le tigre velvet? Its shocking and bold and looks great in red rooms. Didn't this room use to have a blue bed with the spencer "S" monogram embroidered on the hangings?

No small jobs having to move that bed. Green carpet looks fine - love green - could it need another light cream layer? The fabric pattern is quite heavy, and the big shapes make it even more so. Can't wait to see what other designers may recommend. Keeping in history or one foot in the present?? Uhm.
