We visited The Mountain in 2001, our 10th anniversary, to watch what I believe was the last Shakespeare outdoor play held there. It was Midsummer Nights Dream and it was beautifully performed. The setting was magical. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to go inside the house.

The handsome property, complemented by the Berkshires as a backdrop, must have made for a truly memorable setting from which to stage The Bard. I hope you’re able to one day tour the interior of the remarkable Mount.
I loved revisiting The Mount through this video tour. Gorgeous photography and succinct text along with a lovely musical accompaniment. The Mount, despite its size, is really a house I can imagine living in. I had forgot what a dog lover the Whartons were. When I visited there years ago, there was a great exhibit on films based on Wharton novels and stories. Hope it was still there for you to enjoy!

Regarding man’s best friend, Teddy and Edith were indeed quite fond of dogs, a quality that reflects well on the couple. Lastly, I’m glad you enjoyed the video tour. Unlike some of Newport’s over-the-top Gilded Age mansions, The Mount is beautiful yet accessible, and it appears Edith Wharton deserves much credit for this architectural balancing act.
While I can’t say I share your sentiments about the lifestyle of Edith Wharton, your input is still appreciated. It might be worth noting, however, that in one’s assessment of Wharton and The Mount, consider the many decades of enjoyment that has been experienced by readers of her novels and the many thousands who have taken great pleasure in touring her home.
