🥇 Winner - The Make Thrift Try Challenge for the Month! 💪 (Challenge Number #2!) Hi everyone! So 3 days after uploading (I wasn’t able to do this yesterday - so we had an extra day of voting!) the result of the poll is: TIED FOR FIRST PLACE - Weird and Wonderful bags theme at 25%! - Embroidery/Appliqué at 25%! Because these two have tied, the challenge for this month will be both of these themes - so you can choose either the weird & wonderful bags theme or the embroidery/appliqué challenge. Or you can do a combination of the two! ;) Rules You have 30 days from the posting of this announcement to: Create (sew, knit, crochet, embroider, clay making, jewellery making etc - any kind of crafting you want) something that fits in with either one of these two themes. You can either make it from scratch or upcycle or repurpose materials or other materials that you have, or you have thrifted. There are no wrong answers - if you think it fits in with the theme then go for it. I’ll get the create ball rolling with some examples you could make but this is only a suggestion and the tip of the iceberg: Weird and Wonderful bags! Upcycle an old stuffed animal and turn it into a backpack. Add little feet or eyes to a thrifted purse. Get a make-your-own-clock kit and try to make a bag with it... - use your imagination! Research other weird bags for inspiration! You can also use the examples on the video as inspiration as well. Embroidery/Appliqué Embroider a favourite quote to the back of a jean jacket. Embroider on some unusual fabrics (mesh for example)! Embroider using yarn and a loose weave sweater. Appliqué over holes on an old piece of clothing to revive it. Make your own appliqués and apply it to a thrifted piece of clothing! If you’re comfortable doing so, post your finished creations/failed experiments to Instagram and tag it with #makethrifttry. I have my stuff for last month's challenge just haven't posted the picture yet. Been dealing with migraines and health issues like crazy so haven't been on much and have unfortunately not been able to finish it. Hopefully it'll be finished soon so I can post the pics. >< unfortunately it just happened to be really rainy and right around when my treatment was up so the pain was kicking back into high gear. Figured you'd understand this as sometimes you just don't have the spoons to do everything you need/want to do when your health acts up and is down
idk why im about to cry in the club but...... im honestly so emotional and happy that you were using gender neutral pronouns for all these people??? im sure so many people didnt even realise that you were doing it, but being n-b and hearing other people use gender neutral terms such as "they" and "person" makes my heart sing. its so important to normalise this sort of language, so huge thank u to you annika ❤️

to try to help with issues looking at screens, whenever seeing very accurate colors is not critical, be sure you are using a (free) blue blocker app. It has really helped me.
Kathy Johnson I don't know if it will help, but my phone has a night reading mode that dims the screen slightly and takes out the blue. The screen looks very orange/red. I don't have any medical issues, but I read often before bed.
I was going to make a comment saying this as well. Please give it a try. It's very helpful. The blue lights from the screens are very harsh on our eyes.

I am so surprised Annika has never made a button up! I made one this winter and I can agree its intimidating, but so fun to wear to work and say you sewed it!!!
I do a lot of embroidery work and try to include it on some of my clothing and accessories. I have been making dog collars that look like flowers for my dog that I embroidered a bee on them. I have also made purses of my own designs and included embroidery on them as well. It makes me feel real good when I get compliments on my work. Thank you for making these videos.

I voted for fuzz because I recently thrifted a vintage fur coat. It's in pretty bad shape with some holes in the back but I'm hoping to fix it up and give it a new lease of life. It IS real fur but that's part of why I want to make it useable again rather than it being thrown out.
(For clarity/in case it isn't obvious - I don't endorse the fur trade and it certainly has no place in the world when faux fur is so well made these days. What the fur indystry has done in inexcusable - but making use of vintage and upcycled fur feels less wasteful than throwing it away imo)
yeah, I can definitely see where you're coming from there. I can't support the fur trade but since the animal has already died it seems wasteful and disrespectful to just throw the fur away.
I'm so glad the challenges continue! I had too many different sewing projects last month (plus a friend visiting) and couldn't fit in something for the first challenge, though I liked both concepts. Let's see what wins this time and if it's something I'd like to contribute for aswell 😊

Annika if bright screens give you migraines (I problem i have too) I know some apps you could use! There's f.lux for windows (don't know if it's available for mac) and for my phone I have the app twilight. Both of these can lower the brightness of your screens and tint them in order to ease the strain on your eyes. If you have apple things you should be able to find alternatives for sure!
I had a really fun time making the half half design. I understand that not everyone could be ft. You had a great response. I'm looking forward to the challenge again!💖👵✌️.👍

she's using a screen recorder, the red shift would show up on the recording.
I have a great one called fl.ux that I use on my computer! And I always set my phone to night mode heheh. It helps a lot too :)

I voted for fuzz because I recently thrifted a vintage fur coat. It's in pretty bad shape with some holes in the back but I'm hoping to fix it up and give it a new lease of life. It IS real fur but that's part of why I want to make it useable again rather than it being thrown out.
(For clarity/in case it isn't obvious - I don't endorse the fur trade and it certainly has no place in the world when faux fur is so well made these days. What the fur indystry has done in inexcusable - but making use of vintage and upcycled fur feels less wasteful than throwing it away imo)
yeah, I can definitely see where you're coming from there. I can't support the fur trade but since the animal has already died it seems wasteful and disrespectful to just throw the fur away.
I'm so glad the challenges continue! I had too many different sewing projects last month (plus a friend visiting) and couldn't fit in something for the first challenge, though I liked both concepts. Let's see what wins this time and if it's something I'd like to contribute for aswell 😊

You should definitely try making a button up collared shirt and/or dress! They're not as scary as you expect. Just iron a lot while sewing. Haha.

Annika if bright screens give you migraines (I problem i have too) I know some apps you could use! There's f.lux for windows (don't know if it's available for mac) and for my phone I have the app twilight. Both of these can lower the brightness of your screens and tint them in order to ease the strain on your eyes. If you have apple things you should be able to find alternatives for sure!
