Three things I would look into on the install of the AP: 1) I checked the installation manual. The tie rod end side (non-threaded) should have the washer between the rod end and the pin, 2) There is a maximum angle of 5* for the actuator. I think this would require you to do one of two things to add a second nut so that you can trap the quadrant between the two nuts or to add a tiller arm to the rudder post. The second idea is better because you get redundancy should the quadrant fail. (I know that from experience).

Happy new year from Ireland. Insane prices/ charges another example of how Brexit has screwed up. We avoid buying anything from UK because of fees.
Orcas are a massive concern for us this coming year. We were only home a week when we heard about attack in Brittany last July in exactly the area we were night sailing with lots of dolphins

Don’t get me started, Brexit continues to be a major pain for us unfortunately. At least you have your Irish passport 😂
There are way more orca interactions than what get reported, and a lot get reported! Have your plan clear, written down, communicated to your crew and ensure it’s ready to rock if needed. If you stay inshore you should be absolutely fine, though this adds many more miles and introduces some pretty rubbish Atlantic swell 🤣

I hope you thoroughly recorded all of the pins dimensions and geometry so you can have one made as a spare. Some stainless can be prone to chloride stress corrosion cracking. I have seen instances where chlorides have been leeched out of insulation by rain onto st. steel surface that led to leading to through wall thickness cracking (12mm thk) at a NE location. Lot of chlorides in a marine environment.

There's nothing special about the bolt other than the hole for the pin and that it's made of 316-steel. As you concluded, it's pretty expensive. It's amazing to see how cruisers get ripped off all the time. Cheers.

Hi Alan. We are wintering in Gibraltar to reset our days. Different countries seem to have different ways of interpreting the rules. In Northern Spain, they called us transitos and didn't stamp us in, but in the south a port police officer wanted to count our days.

Agree with your comments about A Coruna. I was there for a few days in May last year and I couldn’t believe how “alive” the place was with ordinary people enjoying their time in the cafes, restaurants and bars and keeping the local economy alive. By the way whatever is “allowed” or “not allowed” when protecting your vessel from Orca interactions and saving lives at sea, nothing should be off your personal protection plans - you just don’t need to broadcast it - just ask the delivery skippers 👍

    Hi guys,
Sand will not do anything, unfortunately, various sailors have tried with just minimal effect. Current advice is to stay as shallow as possible (not always safe or even possible down the PT coast), NOT shut down the engine and sit silently in case of an orca encounter, but to apply full throttle and head towards more shallow water as quickly as possible, making noise that transfers into the water, (e.g., bangin' with something metal onto the lowered swim ladder).
Should you be offered waterproof firecrackers, they are illegal. It is also not proven that they work, and they could even make the animals more aggressive.
I live and sail in the Lisbon area; talked to a sailor from Norway a few days ago about that was damaged 10 nm south of my home port (Sesimbra). he said the animals came out of nowhere, slammed hard into the hull first, then went for the rudders. 20 minutes later, they went away. the result was 2 broknen rudders, rudder bearings, and cables, and a large area with scratched antifouling, down to the gelocoat, where the orca had hit the boat upon first contact. After a few days in my marina, he was towed to Cascais, where the boat will be repaired during the next few weeks.
These animals are not playing, and the encounters have reportedly become more violent in the past few months. This is no game and no joke. Be careful, stay as close to shore as possible, avoid night passages, and, most importantly, stay safe.
    Cheers, Frank

@@oldshipmatesadventures hi Frank and thank you very much for taking the time to share such a detailed viewpoint and description of the current best practise. Certainly when we were in the area, there was data to suggest that sand had helped to deter aggression in 50% of the encounters it had been used in, so we thought we’d give it a go! Especially as it took little effort and didn’t cost anything.
We sailed as close to shore as we could through Portugal and it’s a tough sail that close in. But thanks again for sharing, I hope that anyone else who views it can see what a serious situation they can find themselves in.
