  • Do you suspect that your child has ADHD? Have you wondered what that means for your homeschool journey? Should you have him or her tested? Can you even do homeschooling properly with an ADHD child? I am joined on this episode of the podcast by Colleen Kessler, a former teacher and expert on gifted and twice-exceptional kids (plus a homeschool mom to more than one with ADHD) to answer those questions and more.

Thank-you so much for making this podcast, I am mother of a 7 year old ADHD kid and I am facing lots of blame on my parenting for his hyper active and aggressive behavior

In our experience a diagnosis was helpful in obtaining accommodations in college. My daughter had an academic coach assigned to her, she can take an extended time on tests, she has the use of technology that will record classes so she doesn't miss any notes. We didn't utilize medication for a long time. Once we did, she stopped struggling and started shining in her school work. It is a personal decision and there is no right or wrong choice. It is about what works for each family. This was our experience. We are starting again with another child who was diagnosed with ADHD and will start medication once he's in 9th grade. They are a gift to us as it requires more patience and understanding on our part to help them through it.

The diagnosis can be useful when the child gets to college. There are accommodations that a uni can make

For parents who have gotten a diagnosis and medications are not working...hang in there. Keep it fun, mix it up, give them lots of breaks and even follow their lead on what they would want to learn about.

The book Disconnected Kids by Dr. Robert Melillo, founder of Brain Balance program. It will help you understand the in’s and out’s of ADHD and how to heal the brain in many ways. It’s incredible, even just for the understanding wayyyy more than just a distracted child. That 6 yr old has a developmental age of 4 and that factors into their behavior. So much helpful info and way forward!

I'm not home schooling my grandson. But he will be staying with me because my daughter is moving out of our neighborhood. He has attention deficit disorder. Hes going into a second grade and he only knows slight words. I need to help him read. And I have attention deficit disorder. And I've learned very slowly. But I've gotten so much better in my life. And I don't want to watch him be behind. If you have any suggestions, we really don't like having him on the medication that they want to put a mind. But he is off the chain. And I need to get structure into his life activities. We're gonna pay for our karate swim license. I'm hoping that will help l Library
    I'many suggestions, please?

Ok first of all there are 3 types of ADHD. Hyperactive, inattentive and combined. Second, there is no ADHD spectrum. It's not like Autism where you have different levels. You either have ADHD or you don't. If your child is hyperactivity, her tips work. They don't work for ADHD kids who are not full of boundless energy.

True. My kid's inattentive, definitely ADHD, but only inattentive. I personally have the combination myself.
