@@diegofrancisco425no the AI was bad in the original versions. The difficulty of the AI is what made OpenXCom a reality. The original XCom and TFTD had the same issues with the difficulty aspect. No matter what you started with, the difficulty came out the same regardless of which version you played on (ps1 console, PC remaster, and DOS). OpenXCom was more than just a mod that allowed the game to be changed and enhanced. It corrected nagging issues with the game that made it difficult to play (but it was never unbearable...it was doable but it always a tough game to play due to their issues...mainly the difficulty aspect as I mentioned here).
I never do breach and clear of a UFO these days. Instead I post around five units in a semi-circle outside the entrance, and wait for turn 20, after which they walk out one by one into a firing squad. Occasionally that will still earn me a grenade to the face due to them trying to break my line, but on the whole I lose a lot fewer units. My first reaction to those two Sectoids near the entrance in your mission here, would have been to throw that high ex straight away. Beam weapons and rifles just miss far too often, especially early on. If I wasn't worried about aoe damage, I'd use high ex as pretty much my exclusive weapon for ranged kills. The only real problem is that you can't carry enough of it, and it is also hard to throw long distances.
The memories that this game triggers in my mind. I bring a whole crew of soldiers and only two make it off the ship. I got slaughtered so many times from this game.... This.... Experience. Best game, for me, all time. 💯👍🏽 Fog of war.. Scary as hell.

@56:00 If that Sectoid hadn't died to your high explosive, I suspect he probably would have received a medal from the Ethereals, having got rid of two of your troops and the tank. I've had Sectoid terror missions where the two LZ campers and their Cyberdisk wiped out half of a ten man squad, before I'd left the Skyranger. As far as I'm concerned, the first rule of this game is that where Sectoids are concerned, there is no such thing as excessive force.
Sacrificing the tank was intensional. The aliens often target a tank instead of soldiers when one is in their line of sight. After the grenade failed and the HE guy couldn't throw the explosive I decided to do a HE kamikazi attack although I still failed to kill both of the Sectoids.
I've never actually seen these ye olde xcom games before, they seem very involved! Moreso than the new ones! (Also, I really like how your soldiers scamper like bugs. Feet go brrrrrr)
I prefer TFTD over the OG, because I love the underwater aspect to it. That said, nothing will ever replace the original in my heart. I still remember getting that game back on floppies and couldn't believe how amazing the graphics were.
i remember playing the demo from a floppy i got in a magazine. It was a night city terror mission. It HOOKED me right there and then. The amazing ambiance sounds & music, the slow bullets that put you always on the edge of your seat since you wondered if it was gonna hit. The chryssalid that FREAKED you out when you turned a corner and they were JUST a square away from you but only had the crappy rifles. Man i really would like a new version of this original game. Perfection would be xcom 1 + 2 mixed together, new locations, houses style, objects, weapons, aliens, same VGA graphics but with new sprites, same fog of war / night, same isometric, new mission types. Also i loved the graphics from xcom 2 in city terror and underwater. So a mix of both underwater + overwater would be epic.... i think the only way to have what i want would be to program it myself

Research laser rifles first then medikits then alien alloys. You can beeline to laser tank afterwards. Once you have a laser tank, switch your mandatory starting rocket tank with it. Research plasma cannons for interceptors. Go after stun launchers, capture floaters, research hovertank. Research alien power source, then power armor. Research hover armor and provide it to everybody. Once you start any mission afterwards, especially terror missions, don't forget to elevate your chars 2 times above ground level, otherwise a Chrysalid can still pierce their hide at ground lvl + 1. Research mind probe, research ball launcher. Don't bother putting balls on interceptors because of low ammo. However, do employ said launchers in ground missions, due to multiple waypoints flexibility it offers. Capture ethereals. Research and train psy soldiers. Enjoy game.
UFO was one of my most loved games as I was a child and this remake was awesome as well! I even make a pen&paper dungeoncrawler like game called SPACE KRAKEN ;-) I published it this year.
Discontinued? MS-DOS was the most popular PC operating system at the time and didn't really start to phase out until after Windows 98 was released. Also, both Windows 95 and 98 could still run most DOS games.
You play much different than I do strategy wise. I always leave enough TVUs for my soldiers to react fire if possible. Then again, Im a more cautious player.
It is complicated as hell. You can lose this game in a hurry if you don't know what you're doing and all you lose funding from too many countries. If your base gets raided early, prepare for a long probably 1-2 hour battle. Having to go all over the map for at least 30 minutes of that to track down one alien hiding in a closet at the end of it probably.
It is, hard as hell also, imo the difficulty was set to super hard when it was ported to the ps1 and you can't seem to change it even if you choose the easiest setting, it is very fun but it seems like the enemy has too much advantage.
I played this game on the first playstation and loved it soooo much but... holy smoke, it was hard ! The only way I found to finish it was to capture a leader at the end of the first month using a truncheon in order to develop psionic power. Otherwise it was a nightmare !
When I first played this the date of 1999 was futuristic, now it is all the more memorable. I can still remember my first encounter with the aliens when my soldier shot a creature but it turned around and fired a green bolt, missed my soldier but destroyed a brick wall behind him. Original Xcom is in my top 10 games for life! Edit - The only thing I would add is on turn one throw a smoke grenade on the floor outside AND drop one inside the Sky ranger. The troops in the craft are above the ground smoke and can be targeted by aliens at a distance, aliens have better eyesight than the humans so always, ALWAYS, level the playing field, especially at night! EXTRA EDIT - WOW, I just watched the start and you are a scamming B*stard, Laser weapons in 4 days with only 10 scientists? We all know how to move save files between games but you are cheating viewers by making them believe that what you are doing is possible in game! Why not just import a team of psi-soldiers with full flying armour? I know why... because then the noobs would have seen you are lying to them!
This is an absolute hailmary pass but does anyone know how fast the celatids in this replicated? They were lil floating creatures that would land and spit corrosive poison at your guys. I am trying with no avail to find my answers online thus far XD.
hi all, love this game too, I still play it using DosBox, but I don't have the "path" when soldiers are walking ? do I have an old version of the game ?
Only? There are other aliens even in this 1st part. Which aliens you encounter is somewhat random except stronger aliens will not appear in the early game.
@@zirkoni42 i saw until the 7th part and there is only floaters or their big guy (orange big one). Normally in the game, the first alien you encounter are the little grey one (but they have not psy power yet) but not for you.

Could be nerves from facing unknown alien invaders with superior tech for the first time. Could be psionics. But mostly the auto shot is a full auto burst in the general direction of the enemy. Aimed shots are much more accurate.
Such a shame that the difficulty is way off and hard as hell, I think that the difficulty was set to super hard when it was ported to the ps1 and you can't seem to change it even if you choose the easiest setting, it is super fun but it seems like the enemy has too much unfair advantage.
it would be cool of you could send a fuel supply to extend yourself a bit, and to extend detection ofc. for a fair price ofc. tftd should have been more than it was
How do you have smooth edge screen moving with mouse during the fight so slow? In my version it is extremly sensitive and i cannot play the game. (using WIN11 + dos-box)
So many years of playing this game and I think I've never seen an alien blowing himself up with a grenade trying to kill a civilian. Also dude regarding the terror mission. You are running all over the place without a plan. Have dedicated scouts and a team behind each scout. When the scout (or tank) finishes his move throw a smoke in front of them to preserve them. And don't use your good soldiers to scout. Use only the fast ones otherwise useless soldiers.
Those missions suck. I remember doing my best to get away with ignoring them until I had unlocked those flying mech suits. Then I could have my team at different heights scouting the map and clean that mess up in a few minutes.
dude! I've been looking for a way to play Xcom original DOS version but somehow with WASD controls and maybe slightly increased resolution? anyone knows of something? I want original A.I. behavior, I don't want OpenXcom recreation
It's smoke. Smoke can be used to block line-of-sight and it also has a slight stun effect. The "stun level" of your troops is shown in the red health bar with the grey colour.
Xcom chimera squad was intended to be something to play as time passes for an eventually xcom 3 with realistic graphic, gore and blood... or at least I think so... I don't consider chimera squad a true xcom but rather a prelude or prologue of the true xcom 3. It is enjoyable even with the cartoonic look. At least I get some rule 34 on snakes :)
To do what? In the beginning of the game the tank is good for scouting and drawing enemy fire since it can usually take multiple hits without dying. The tank doesn't gain experience so it's better to use the soldiers to kill the aliens the tank has spotted.
How the hell do you reload? This game is so aggravating to figure out the controls too and trying to look up information on it just gives me the remake or one of the 100 sequals. It's been fun except trying to learn how to play holy shit
Open the inventory screen and drag'n'drop a clip of the correct type on top of the weapon. The weapon must be in hand and I think the other hand must be free.

Discontinued? MS-DOS was the most popular PC operating system at the time and didn't really start to phase out until after Windows 98 was released. Also, both Windows 95 and 98 could still run most DOS games.
@@zirkoni42 Ignore me I'm new. For some reason I thought it was launched on Amiga only but it was a DOS title, as you say.
>Tries to throw grenade over a UFO in order to hit a target half a soccer field away
>Grenade lands on roof of UFO
>Panic ensues..
This is played well, unlike other streams of UFO/X-COM on UA-cam where the streamers aren't so careful or observant. Good work.
It's hard to be observant and careful while being observed by others and interacting with them.
One of the best
I remember the explosion mess when shooting with the rocket launcher...
I remember the alien screams differently, more monster like, and creepier than this.
that's the sequel Terror From The Deep... legit one of the very best sound design I ever hear on any game
I found the scream sound I remember is used for the snake-race death sequence
Geez, that first Alien turn of the Terror Mission at 10:29 was a doozy...
You play much different than I do strategy wise. I always leave enough TVUs for my soldiers to react fire if possible. Then again, Im a more cautious player.
Awesome Game! Damn time is running fast
This game is what inspired blue archive from what I've heard
Love the original, XCOM2 Terror from the deep made me nuts.. those ships, the bases... it took so long 😅
15:38 stray shot.
I love how Floaters and Sectoids go like:
"Ohhwn :("
Seeing those extremely lucky cases make it even better.
it was an elk
Came looking for this comment...I was like "Waitasecond,... ohhhh!! that poor bastard thought he was safe in the dark..." He did it again at 25:21
This game looks complicated as all hell, I have NO idea what's going on
its wonderful mate trust me
As Aethel Wulf said..It`s wonderfull..and it really is :) Give it(and the aliens ofc ;) ) A shot, and i`m sure you will find it rewarding :)
I was playing it when I was 10. You’ll be fine.
Favorite game of all time.
We've come a loooong way
I played this game on the first playstation and loved it soooo much but... holy smoke, it was hard !
Click lots to save earth
This game was insanely scary.. I had to play with music on =/
The music remind me of the first Terminator movie.
Damn, That Main Menu Music Is *Jontrons Voice* "SSSSSCCCCCcccccccccaaaaarrrrrryyy!!"
I loved this game but it kept crashing when I reached the top level of one of the big UFO’s 😡
OpenXCom? Or do you mean the original DOS game? I have had both crash sometimes but it's quite rare.
zirkoni88 original DOS game
This is an absolute hailmary pass but does anyone know how fast the celatids in this replicated? They were lil floating creatures that would land and spit corrosive poison at your guys. I am trying with no avail to find my answers online thus far XD.
Looks hard
hi all, love this game too, I still play it using DosBox, but I don't have the "path" when soldiers are walking ? do I have an old version of the game ?
This is OpenXCom: openxcom.org/about/
thanks ! great !
I play on steam - dos box
You are legend man 😎👍
@zirkoni I know this longplay is very old, but do you remember why you fight only against floaters ?
System requirements should have said replacement mouse recommended.
Just slow the scroll speed down in options
It takes the blaster bomb in the face, or it gets the hose again!
What kind of version is it? It's a windows one?
Video title: OpenXCOM. I suggest you google that word (and the video was actually recorded on Linux).
@@zirkoni42 Thx, something was not right comparing to DOS version :)
@@kocur1977 I've been looking for a way to play Xcom original DOS version but somehow with WASD controls and maybe slightly increased resolution? anyone knows of something? I want original A.I. behavior, I don't want OpenXcom recreation
Are your units stormtroopers? They miss almost every shot!
Could be nerves from facing unknown alien invaders with superior tech for the first time. Could be psionics.
But mostly the auto shot is a full auto burst in the general direction of the enemy. Aimed shots are much more accurate.
Better than the all or nothing of the new games.
Such a shame that the difficulty is way off and hard as hell, I think that the difficulty was set to super hard when it was ported to the ps1 and you can't seem to change it even if you choose the easiest setting, it is super fun but it seems like the enemy has too much unfair advantage.
Producing mass quantities of laser rifles was easy way to make money.
Was it possible to clock this game I use to play as a kid but I remember it as a game that never ended
This looks like a fun game but it seems way too complicated for me.
it would be cool of you could send a fuel supply to extend yourself a bit, and to extend detection ofc. for a fair price ofc. tftd should have been more than it was
Memoarable game, with INTEL 486 PROCESSOR., can't find it againt in 2024.
What do you mean can't find it? Your original copy of the game? Because the game is still sold at both Steam and GOG.
How do you have smooth edge screen moving with mouse during the fight so slow? In my version it is extremly sensitive and i cannot play the game. (using WIN11 + dos-box)
This is not the original game but Openxcom, an open source remake.
@@zirkoni42Thank you so much for that. Gonna play this today!
Sick game.
Grenades on Reavers if you want a live one!
15:40 lol 32:50 loooool ... turds and frogs first... an no surviving civilians XD
dude! I've been looking for a way to play Xcom original DOS version but somehow with WASD controls and maybe slightly increased resolution? anyone knows of something? I want original A.I. behavior, I don't want OpenXcom recreation
Duckstation ps1 emulator for PC
Also can't his tank fire its cannon?
The tank cannot gain experience. If possible, I prefer using the soldiers to kill the aliens so they get the experience to level up.
26:40 lighting up the place with flare and have ur own crew walk and stand over them...why?
Usually to pick up the flare and throw it again to some different area.
@@zirkoni42 k..
i really liked the smoke bomb starting move.. never thought of that when i played last time. nice
i heard this version drop difficulty to beginner after 1st mission
The original game had this bug but in the video I am using OpenXcom that fixes many other bugs and introduces several improvements as well.
Sound FX just like arcade game xybots
Haha "Construction Time"...? What's that?
Buenas cuál era el nombre del juego y como sepuedeconseguir lo juvenil bueno
Why is it "misty" when the area is blown up? And what is this called; any effect when soldier stand on this surface?
It's smoke. Smoke can be used to block line-of-sight and it also has a slight stun effect. The "stun level" of your troops is shown in the red health bar with the grey colour.
Way better than this new xcom crap!
@@ginopippofrebooter-ilrinne2881 Oh, did you think he was talking just about Chimera squad?
Miles and miles better.
There were times when I wish you'd used the tank.
To do what? In the beginning of the game the tank is good for scouting and drawing enemy fire since it can usually take multiple hits without dying. The tank doesn't gain experience so it's better to use the soldiers to kill the aliens the tank has spotted.
53:05 Wouldn't a rocket have taken out both aliens?
@@MrInitialMan This is the cannon tank, not the rocket tank.
So you would have only gotten one anyways. I stand corrected.
Still better to shoot with tank than get 3 soldiers killed
How the hell do you reload? This game is so aggravating to figure out the controls too and trying to look up information on it just gives me the remake or one of the 100 sequals. It's been fun except trying to learn how to play holy shit
Open the inventory screen and drag'n'drop a clip of the correct type on top of the weapon. The weapon must be in hand and I think the other hand must be free.
what does the grainy stuff mean
Grainy stuff? You mean the smoke? Smoke can block the line of sight (for aliens and xcom).
