In the 60s when I was a teenager i lived in Plymouth. It had a good number of Chinese people who had settled after arriving on ships of all sorts. They were great mariners who sailed the seas. Not so the sub Saharan Africans! So I've often wondered why they, the Chinese are not mentioned in our histories albeit they were only a small number. I didn't see a black person till I was about 18, and he was a student at the Camborne School of Mining, sent by his father, a Cheif in Uganda to learn the trade. Interesting. I have very similar recollections about growing up in leicester. Those recollections are obviously wrong as we are reliably informed people of Asian ( Indian pakistani) have ALWAYS been the majority.

I was born in west London in 1958, but lived in Chessington for the first ten years of my life. I would put money on the fact that there was, at that time, not one person who wasn’t English, Welsh, Scottish or Irish residing in that town. Very occasionally my parents would have a rare night out, to the cinema in Kingston followed by a meal. There must have been a Chinese restaurant there because next day they sometimes had a bag of prawn crackers which seemed impossibly exotic to a wee lad. The first time I saw a black person was in Southampton in 1969. The woman concerned was a trainee teacher from Sierra Leone. Our teacher had to show us all on the big map just where this country was. Up to that time I had never seen a black person. I was gobsmacked.

In the 60s when I was a teenager i lived in Plymouth. It had a good number of Chinese people who had settled after arriving on ships of all sorts. They were great mariners who sailed the seas. Not so the sub Saharan Africans!
So I've often wondered why they, the Chinese are not mentioned in our histories albeit they were only a small number. I didn't see a black person till I was about 18, and he was a student at the Camborne School of Mining, sent by his father, a Cheif in Uganda to learn the trade.

I’m very interested in Tudor England and lived for a while close to where some of the action of Wolf Hall takes place but I will not watch the series due to the reason you mentioned. I do plan to read the complete Mantel trilogy though.

Not many Chinese or Indian people in Tudor England because Europe was still under siege by the Ottoman Empire and trade and travel to the East was limited. Marco Polo had travelled there during a brief respite after the Mongol empire had subdued the Ottoman threat.
The Ottomans only rose to power in the early 14th century, ie, after the Mongol Empire had begun to crumble. Only when Sultan Bayezid I was defeated by Timur in 1405 was there any kind of clash between them and the Turco-Mongol successor states. By the time of Queen Elizabeth, there was increasing trade between England and the Mediterranean world (the Venice Company and Turkey Company - both founded in the early 1580s, and merged as the Levant Company in 1592. There also existed the short-lived Barbary Company (aka the Marocco Company), 1585-97 which was established to trade into North Africa as the name suggests.
You're quite incorrect in claiming that trade with the orient was limited. Treaties between states in Europe and the Ottomans allowed for traders to travel overland, regardless of whether there was war between the Turks and the Habsburgs. Most long distance trade was done by sea not overland. Maritime travel (once the prevailing winds had been worked out) was far faster, and therefore cheaper, than travelling by slow moving caravans across land. China itself had turned inwards by Tudor times after brief periods of maritime exploration and trade as far west as Africa during the latter part of Kublai Khan's reign and that of his son Temür (1294-1307), and then again during the early Ming (the famous 'treasure voyages' between 1405 and 1433). The main barrier against North European trade to the east was not the Ottomans but the rivalry and jealousy of Portugal and Spain who attempted to carve up the world between them. That was eventually broken, first by the Dutch, who were even more ruthless than the Portuguese, and later by the English and French.

There were likely no more than a few hundred non-Europeans (altogether) back then, which even at the time was no more than 0.3% of the population. Mr.Webb, perhaps if you came from an ethnic group that had until exposure to Europeans and some degree Arabs largely lived much the same as Stone Age societies, culturally and technologically who then colonised your homelands but enslaved millions of your ancestors across the world to become slaves, who eventually were freed and left to integrate themselves into those same societies that were responsible for that history perhaps you’d welcome any alternative to the reality of the facts especially if an element of the society that you find yourself in are willing to brainwash everyone who didn’t know better that there is an alternative history of your ancestors?
