That might end up being Midori downfall because while he’s becoming way more independent and not trying to involve other people. Shigaraki is forming a team that moves on its own without anybody having to be told anything.
Reminds me a lot of how Luffy manages his crew. He trusts them completely and lets them do whatever they think is right. Deku is fucked. Nakama power in anime is a godlike power.
One thing I love about Shigaraki is that despite how much he has grown and matured, but deep down he's still that man child who's so innocently evil. *Spoilers,* later in the manga after a huge arc, after he acquired a huge amount of power that's enough to destroy the world, instead of coming up a malicious plan, he's just like "Is it over? Great! Let's throw ourselves a sushi party!"
Shigaraki along with Todoroki are my favourite characters. Shigaraki is incredibly interesting. He acted like a child at the start with pure chaotic purposes despite being a young adult. He has always given me a similar vibe of a horror movie antagonist but with more depth. The episode "Encounter" is still one of my favourites to this day, the entire interaction of Midoriya and Shigaraki sitting down and talking about their goals, without attacking eachother, is an incredible moment in the series for me. FOR MANGA READERS ONLY: I had an idea once I was thinking about Shigaraki. What if, once he gets this power he's been cultivating for 3 months now, he kills All for one. I mean, in my opinion, AFO is All might's villain and Shigaraki is Deku's. All might is retired and now its Dekus time. So, consider how powerful Shigaraki will be after "the power" is completed (literally 110.000+ liberation soldiers, 10 high end Nomus, Gigantomachia, League with Twice's and Toga's evolved quirks). With that, I dont doubt Shigaraki could simply kill All for one and be like "I dont need your mentoring anymore".
Not spoiling anything in the comment, but as a manga-reader, I completely agree and think you’re exactly on-point. It’s been amazing watching Shigaraki go from what I thought was (when I started the show) our “Villain of the Week” (cool design, just meant to be a minor villain), to the badass villain he is currently (plus his future learning and development. Seeing a villain be a foil to the hero and watching them grow from “nothing” to the main villain is interesting and not something common or may not have honestly been done before in hero media. And the best part: Shigaraki’s future development (which will take place next season) is gonna be glorious.
Great video essay, really saw that you took the time to dissect him as the villain and not just a spoiled brat from arc to arc, just beautiful way to portray an amazing series and it’s dark rooted side.
I think one thing to remember about destroying overhauls hands is the impact isn't from losing his quirk but from the fact he now no longer has a way to wake his boss up from the coma. Shigaraki took away his reason to live.

I’d like to point out that when we first meet Shigaraki, he barely flakes some skin off of Eraserhead’s elbow. But when Overhaul attacks them, he instantly disintegrates a minion with a touch. And yes, I read the manga.
Shigaraki is my favorite character of all the animes I've ever seen, he has just grown into such a good villain and I love his design and how his overall personality was written. As a manga reader I absolutely love my villain academia it's just so good!!!

Ironically enough Izuku and Shigaraki are basically two sides of the same coin.
My favourite villain ever personally is Noximilien The Watchmaker. A rly deep and easy to relate to villain coming from the first season of Wakfu. I haven't rly seen anything past season 1 but i have heard great things about season 2. Just for the love of god don't watch the english dub. If you're not planning to watch it here is a very quick rundown of the character: Nox was basically a low end engineer with a wife, a dog and three kids. He accidentally finds an incredibly powerful cube, it talks to him. He studies it and it allows him to make way more powerful machines and it consumes him. His wife leaves him and takes the kids to a different place where they would live for the next couple months and die in a flood. When he finds out he is sad and angry, the cube tells him he can revert time to save them but he needs "power energy" called wakfu. He studies wakfu and collects it for 200 years believing that if he succeeds all his evil deeds will be reversed. When he finally gets enough the cube takes him back 20 minutes. He is wrecked with grief and he dissapears only to later commit suicide. I love this character so much
What I love about My Hero academia is that I always under estimate a character. Except for Minuta. Anyway in season 1 I always thought Shigiraki would be replaced by Bakugo back when Bakugo was just a bully. Boy was I wrong about both. Not only has Bokugo proven that he is going to be a hero but Shigiraki has proven he is not a character that can be replaced. Like u said he is evolving and doing things smart villains would do. In season 3 he was almost successful with keeping a kidnapped student. And he’s proven to be an actual strategist. I am terrified of how much he can improve himself down the series makes me want to read the manga after this seasons over. Which I will cause I hear he does not stop growing as a character.
As someone who read the manga, you are going to be for the best treat ever with tomura. The story make a really good job to explore and make their character grow/have depth, but as you said, Shigaraki mirror Deku as the protagonist of his own story and god does the story bring some very important thing.
Between the highway scene and his development in the manga, Shigaraki is probably my favorite character in the entire series now. Never though I’d love this crusty boi as much as I do.
There could not possibly be a better villain for Midoriya than Shigaraki. I love it. They're both learning and building and creating their own path and one day it's going to come to a head in a showdown I hope outclasses the United States of Smash (which by the way I could go on a whole other lecture/happy rant about). I am so looking forward to seeing Shigaraki grow and become Dekus equal in evil. I wonder if All For One can transfer All For One.
The League of Villains are like a lesser version of the Phantom Troupe from Hunter x Hunter in that they have become a family that relies and trust each other and can work together remarkably well towards a goal. I love Shigaraki and I can't wait to see what becomes of him.
He literally turned into season 2 Kaneki, and i really love that because they both became free, and liberated, i mean one is a anti hero, and the other is a psychopath because of his quirk of pure chaos, and decay. But to me anyone being able to become liberated is a beautiful thing even if your a villain, even if your the biggest piece of shit if you can find your inner peace, then just inbrace it, don’t try to hide it or change yourself because that would do more damage then anything, because i do want Shigaraki, to have a happy ending, but if his ending is to lose to Midoriyu, at least he went out with his new found inner peace. But i will admit personal i enjoyed him since the first appearance he had, but i do love how much he has improved and developed in the manga, i have spoiled myself on it, but i still can’t wait to read his fight against Re Destro, and when it gets animated hopefully in season 5.
at the beginning of the show I was like “how the fuck will handy boi go against deku” But now it’s just like “you better run deku shigaraki is coming to beat your ass”
i kinda wonder what the extent of overhaul's powers are/would be if he hadnt lost his arms. like, could he use it to reverse his own aging? there was some line about healing someone if he was quick enough about it, so he cant just literally ressurect a dead person, there still has to be some life left in them (i assume it has something to do with cellular death? like things like heart beating and breathing and such dont matter, but if all the cells are dead no amount of putting them back together will unkill the cells). he could literally meld another person to himself to get stronger, so can he put 2 other people together, or just absorb them?
warning. small spoilers from manga. at the time of writing this "Meta Liberation Army Arc" finished recently the 15 ark so far. And in the anime we are at Episode 78 Smoldering Flames witch is the first episode in ark 11 "Remedial Course Arc''. What you need to know about the 15 ark is that it is entirely about Villains ,one of the chapters is even called My Villain Academia, but the big thing about this ark we see the origin of several villains and Shigaraki is one of them. So that is something to look forward to in season 5 or 6. Or you can just read the manga.
If you like shigaraki so much, do urself a favor and read the manga, vuz there are some incredible scenes wjere shigaraki goes beyond anything the people expected, but they won't get animated for at leat 2 to 3 years I think, cuz they are some what recent in the manga
Also the reason Shigariki wants destruction is because his quirk causes him to crave it, like how La Brava’s quirk made her fall in love easily and how Toga’s makes her attracted to blood.
I root for Shigaraki just as much as Midoriya these days Edit: I think it's because he was portrayed as one of those villains that don't amount to anything and didn't learn. Watching him learn how to get what he wants after being beaten down and disrespected so much is like an underdog story. Watching him and the league reminds me of Ainz's crew in Overlord working towards world domination.
You know what would be cool if Shiguraki could decay the very air around him nullify air based attacks (Deku's delaware smash) and taking the oxygen away from fire based attacks.

Between the highway scene and his development in the manga, Shigaraki is probably my favorite character in the entire series now. Never though I’d love this crusty boi as much as I do.
I thought you were talking about the manga because um... Well, if you loved him now you'd fucking lose it at the manga.
Bro when his origin story was revealed and what happened after that was simply amazing.
The League of Villains are like a lesser version of the Phantom Troupe from Hunter x Hunter in that they have become a family that relies and trust each other and can work together remarkably well towards a goal. I love Shigaraki and I can't wait to see what becomes of him.
Both just learn from every single person they come across. And that is great. They don't grow their powers but they grow their minds.
But i will admit personal i enjoyed him since the first appearance he had, but i do love how much he has improved and developed in the manga, i have spoiled myself on it, but i still can’t wait to read his fight against Re Destro, and when it gets animated hopefully in season 5.
at the beginning of the show I was like “how the fuck will handy boi go against deku”
But now it’s just like “you better run deku shigaraki is coming to beat your ass”
i kinda wonder what the extent of overhaul's powers are/would be if he hadnt lost his arms. like, could he use it to reverse his own aging? there was some line about healing someone if he was quick enough about it, so he cant just literally ressurect a dead person, there still has to be some life left in them (i assume it has something to do with cellular death? like things like heart beating and breathing and such dont matter, but if all the cells are dead no amount of putting them back together will unkill the cells). he could literally meld another person to himself to get stronger, so can he put 2 other people together, or just absorb them?
Shigaraki is truly L I B E R A T E D
Excellent
I love Shigaraki a lot because of his character development and his backstory is sad. I am going to be really sad when he will be defeated.
and THIS is why hes my fav character
warning.
small spoilers from manga.
at the time of writing this "Meta Liberation Army Arc" finished recently the 15 ark so far.
I kind of understood right away what my hero was trying to do with shigaraki. Even though he was a weak villain I think they made it clear early on.
I think Kingpin in Season 1 Daredevil Netflix series was awesome, actually had you cheer for him at one point.
Just wait to see how much more he grows
If you like shigaraki so much, do urself a favor and read the manga, vuz there are some incredible scenes wjere shigaraki goes beyond anything the people expected, but they won't get animated for at leat 2 to 3 years I think, cuz they are some what recent in the manga
As a manga reader, it gets so much better
can’t wait for season 5. shigaraki’s gonna fuck shit up
Also the reason Shigariki wants destruction is because his quirk causes him to crave it, like how La Brava’s quirk made her fall in love easily and how Toga’s makes her attracted to blood.
What if the Joker learned nen?
What kind of Hatsu would be develop?
I root for Shigaraki just as much as Midoriya these days
Edit: I think it's because he was portrayed as one of those villains that don't amount to anything and didn't learn. Watching him learn how to get what he wants after being beaten down and disrespected so much is like an underdog story. Watching him and the league reminds me of Ainz's crew in Overlord working towards world domination.
I don’t care about shigaraki (yet). Twice is the one villain I take serious.
That moment when he almost split (in season 4) was so thrilling.
Oh and he will become so much more
This better get a part 2 when the my villain academia arc gets animated
You know what would be cool if Shiguraki could decay the very air around him nullify air based attacks (Deku's delaware smash) and taking the oxygen away from fire based attacks.
like you're taking about a son! 😂 and it's amazing that this is 7 months ago!
You need to read the manga man, he REALLY evolves
Bruh he’s terrifying in the manga atm
R.I.P. Snatch..
After the most recent arc last year....shiggy is my 3rd fav character period. (1.kirishima 2. Endeavor 3. Shiggy diggy)
I'm a manga reader. This comment section reminds me of the season 4 trailer where it was crowded with "manga readers: your're not ready" comments lol. That's the point, they're supposed to be shocked by it
